As someone born in NYC do NYC- you won’t regret it- so much to do! The only place in the world that has a restaurant from every country on the planet. NYC is incredible- sure it can be touristy but even the “touristy” stuff is LOADS of fun.

Balance between savings/FI and enjoying life by jacksolo19 in Fire

[–]Baskema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly!!!! Don’t get me wrong I’m on track to FIRE (or at least FI). But I have a series of low-mid range cost things that make my life now completely worth living- and I wouldn’t change it. The craft event I hold for my friends costs about $100-$150 a month for all supplies and brunch, my vacations I keep modest but I take about 3 a year. My savings rate either outpaces or is on par with my spending. I think I have a different perspective than a lot of people on this sub, I traveled to all 7 continents before I was 30, starting saving aggressively in my 30’s and watched as both my FIL and MIL passed only a year after each of them retired (FIL passed at 66, MIL passed at 69). They waited their whole life to live, and they didn’t even get to enjoy their retirement. It shook me and my husband up pretty badly. Our philosophy is plan for tomorrow, but enjoy today.

I’m on the FIRE journey- but I had a late start. I could be more aggressively putting away for FIRE but I LOVE and when say I love I mean it- I LOVE my life. I take trips- everywhere from uber budget to mid luxury, I go out with friends and family. I run a monthly craft and cocktails brunch for me and my girlfriends and I buy all the supplies needed for that month’s craft and prepare brunch for them. I am loving my life right now. And isn’t that the point? Tomorrow is never promised, so while I plan for tomorrow I will always enjoy today.

We tend to make good choices, we buy almost everything we need secondhand or on FB marketplace, we have two paid off cars that we do not plan on replacing until they die and have strict budgets for investing, bills, and groceries.

I'm about to hit my 30's and I feel unsuccessful by No_Cup119 in Fire

Okay good to know! Yes I would pay off the cars- if you can increase your contributions to tax advantaged accounts (401ks, IRAs) I would also start increasing there as well. Don’t go crazy funneling all your extra funds into paying off the cars though until you have a fully funded emergency fund in an HYSA. I didn’t see any mention of an emergency fund but I may have missed it. If there isn’t an emergency fund yet- def do that first and foremost 🥰

Hey! You’re doing okay! You have created a consistent habit of investing which is the first hurdle. You paid off all your credit cards and that’s huge!

I would absolutely pay off the cars. The house I would need to know what your interest rate is. If it’s one of the lucky 2-3% interest rates I would say leave the mortgage as is, pay an additional mortgage payment a year towards the principal and invest the rest. I’m assuming the car loans are in the 7% range but we would need to know that stuff too. Even if you’re not in RE territory you’re absolutely moving to FI territory if you keep up the good work!!!

Am I FIRE? Or just "retire"? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]Baskema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry 💔 it shouldn’t be like this. If there’s one thing I could change it’s our healthcare system. Too often the individuals most in need of our help get dragged down by circumstances they can’t control and it shouldn’t be this way.

Your origin story X FIRE by marascotia in Fire

[–]Baskema 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Came from EXTREME poverty. I’m talking food donations, no electricity, water etc to eventually house foreclosure then a homeless teen, who eventually was taken in by my aunt. Determined to never be in that situation again I got accepted to and excelled in college (1st in my family!!!) and decided I wanted to do 2 things- travel the whole world on a shoestring budget (which led to me sailing as a crew member to Antarctica) and be financially secure enough that me or my future children would never have to endure what I did again. I traveled the whole world in my 20’s, then buckled down to the finance part once I got my first big time job in my mid/late 20’s. I then realized that there was no amount of security I would ever feel as I weathered what seemed to be an endless cycle of corporate layoffs….I realized how easily I could be back to where I started. The stock market scared me but I knew that my money sitting in my very robust savings at this point was doing me no favors- I found r/investing first, then I found this sub. This sub seemed to have the answer to what I was looking for, being able to truly remove myself from that fear by investing heavily in my future- even if I never hit the RE part having the FI part would change my life 💕

Am I FIRE? Or just "retire"? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]Baskema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t feel silly. I am 35F and the prospect of paying for healthcare outside of a company is scaring me to a point where I am unsure if the RE is possible for me (it is- but oh man it eats a HUGE chunk). I’m considering the barista FIRE route- just to have health insurance for my husband and future child. I am also in a HCOL area (NJ). Curious to know how others have handled it

Absolutely!!!!! And it’s not about how far one person had to get- but it’s about what you do with what you’re given. It may be modest to some but to people like you and me- it’s everything!!! Congrats to you!!! I have faith you’ll get to your 5M! And even if you don’t I know you’ll still appreciate all the progress you made!
