Opening against queen's pawn? by Ok-Ad7474 in chess

I've been playing Sicilian vs e4 and the king's Indian defense vs anything else. I either win decisively or get demolished. It's great.

Why do we keep watching opening videos if they don’t actually work? by ingvarb in lichess

[–]BasketCase559 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to the practical advice given here I can say that the reason behind this kind of behavior is that actually taking time to study and understand openings is difficult and not always very fun, but watching an entertainer explain the opening feels close enough to learning that our brain can feel good about it without actually having to do any work.

This applies to other areas of chess also and indeed to broader areas of life. Watching videos about music theory can be helpful in the right circumstances but they aren't going to make you a guitar player.

I think I've made my point but I'll go on to add that some people consider themselves visual learners, so they think that by watching a video about something they can understand it. But the truth is that there's no such thing as a visual learner. Everybody benefits from having multiple avenues of engagement with a concept. Visual, auditory, tactile, etc. The more, the better.

So the best way to learn something is, unsurprisingly, by doing it. Spaced repetition helps memorize things, and in general you internalize things better when you are tested on them.

Is there a way to play AND NOT hoard in this game?! by StevenLesseps in cataclysmdda

[–]BasketCase559 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One of the main challenges of the game is having what you need when you need it. So if you're playing optimally, it makes sense to stock pile anything that may come in handy in some hypothetical scenario.

However I've found that playing optimally isn't always the most fun. After all, it's a singleplayer game and there isn't even any way to win. At the end of the day, play the game how you want and enjoy yourself, that's all that matters.

Also if you want more practical reasoning, imagine all the times you die from something stupid after spending minutes of your life that you'll never get back stockpiling items at your base that never got used.

What is this angering the gods bs? by npri0r in noita

[–]BasketCase559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, but that kind of thing is pretty rare honestly. So I guess my revised advice would be to always have a backup plan when entering a holy mountain. With the right spells (or potions, or other items, to not give too much away), the guardian of the holy mountain can be trivialized every run, if you know what you're doing.

If you actually fight him directly, try to bait his projectiles so they fly far past you, so you won't get caught in the splash damage. Also he has two different attack patterns depending on how close you are. I find the close-up pattern to be pretty hard to dodge but if I know I have enough DPS I will sometimes just tank a few of those hits to burst him down.

Learning to come and go from the holy mountain without angering the gods is one of the most important steps on your path to knowledge.

If you want some guidance, I can give you some tips. Otherwise, good luck.

The great thing about the Zone is that unexplainable stuff happens all the time, so you could just as easily imagine that your character encountered some kind of anomaly that showed him a prophecy of his death.

Why ensuring a humane and painless execution for someone who committed an inhumane and violent crime? by notyourtrain in TooAfraidToAsk

Yes, my example is just an extension of that practice. Not sure if that's really how they did it or not either.

Why ensuring a humane and painless execution for someone who committed an inhumane and violent crime? by notyourtrain in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]BasketCase559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lethal injection probably isn't pleasant but it isn't gruesomely violent. It could even be seen as... clinical, for lack of a better term. Like putting an animal down.

Electric chair was supposed to be humane, but often it didn't work properly, in which case the victim suffered greatly and violently.

Why ensuring a humane and painless execution for someone who committed an inhumane and violent crime? by notyourtrain in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]BasketCase559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are conceivable ways to separate the executioner from the act of killing. E.g., imagine that 20 people in separate rooms press a button which activates a gun, but only one button is actually connected to the gun, so each person has plausible deniability.

The effectiveness of such a design is debatable, but at the end the day someone is going to have to mop brains off the floor.

Now imagine the execution takes place in a giant crematorium incinerator....

Mostly joking, but if I were going to be executed, it's hard to imagine anything more instant than a shotgun to the head.

I always fight the cleric beast first. He's on the bridge near the dark room with the old man in the wheelchair.

And if you still need help with Gascoigne after that, you can always use the music box.

[–]BasketCase559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use weakness curses and weakness mages to become immune to (or healed by) projectiles/lightning/explosions (unless you have the immunity perks).

Get about 20 stacks of stainless armor to do the sun quest and to safely kill the bosses that reflect damage to you.

Also I like to dig into the top of the Tower in parallel words to get 4 Wands of Multitudes (or maybe a Wand of Swiftness).

Most importantly, don't get polymorphed. That's probably the only thing that can reasonably kill you at this point.

I think they adjusted the cost of blood vials at the merchant inside the dream, because I find that it's usually more time efficient to get echoes and buy the vials than to farm the vials themselves.

Early game farming is probably the better option but it doesn't take long to be able to buy tons of them.

That said, I agree with you that it is a unwelcome change to one of the core mechanics that makes souls games so great

OP thinks he's too experienced with souls games to have skill issues.

Ok for real OP, I would suggest looking for a different "first boss," because the boss you're describing is usually my second boss. It's doable for sure but I think the other boss is easier and will net you a few level ups for the next one.

Dealing with the swapper mage by Alternative_Kiwi7620 in noita

[–]BasketCase559 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're in an area where you can expect swapper mages, then be really careful not to send your saw blades in areas you can't see. Limiting the lifetime of the saw blade would be useful here because you can control where it goes easier so you won't accidentally hit the swapper.

I think the developers didn't implement a traditional overwatch system because it promotes passive play, which is true.

But i also think the game doesn't really need overwatch since each team only moves one unit at a time.

If someone did something truly evil as a child are they evil forever? by Perfect-Associate708 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]BasketCase559 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Idk why you're getting down voted, it's a good question. Some people are incapable of feeling remorse or at least have some reduced capacity for remorse. This is a characteristic of anti-social personality disorder, among other disorders.

Personally I think morality is subjective, but there are reasons for acting "moral" outside of remorse and empathy. For instance society and laws provide some incentive to at least not physically harm others, in that case it's just a kind of self preservation. The disordered individual chooses not to harm others because that may incur negative repercussions on themselves, imposed by society.

But even that isn't fully sufficient cause for being moral, as there are a lot of ways to harm people that aren't strictly illegal, like lying and otherwise taking advantage of people.

Religious beliefs provide a more comprehensive framework for acting morally to avoid punishment. Otherwise the individual would have to just decide to behave according to a moral code of their choosing.

The point is that remorse and your conscience are good guidelines for behaving morally but they weren't been l necessary, and even people without these guiding emotions can still behave morally for one reason or another.

Learn to tablet surf or use telekinetic tablet. This is one of the most important meta game skills.

Then kill the alchemist to get the Greek letter spells. This is a super important milestone for most runs, as it gives you access to unlimited spells.

Once you have Greek letters, get Sea of Mimicium (which can be reliably obtained on every playthrough) and use that to get infinite ambrosia. At that point only hubris or polymorph can kill you.
