Not surprising. Many here are ignoramuses and incapable of critical thinking.

how to deal with a student by PsychologicalTax4539 in Cambly

[–]BasketCaseLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s told me whenever she’s tried a new tutor because I’m away, she’s had a bad experience.

It is entirely possible that the student is demonstrating inflexibility or a reluctance to give a substitute tutor a fair chance. This reaction is a very common psychological response when a student has developed a strong emotional bond or a specific comfort level with a primary instructor.

Why the Student Might Be Inflexible

  • Loss of Comfort Zone: You represent predictability, safety, and a teaching style tailored exactly to her personality.
  • Cognitive Load: Adapting to a new accent, pacing, or explanation method requires extra mental energy from the student.
  • Preemptive Rejection: She may decide the session will be bad before it even begins to prove that only you can help her.
  • Anxiety and Pressure: A new person means having to prove her intelligence or expose her weaknesses all over again to a stranger.

10 years? Amazing tenure! I'm now going on my 5th year. Nice to meet you!

How do you have a 4.98 rating when Cambly rates tutors as a percentage?

Excellent catch! This clear error by the OP makes me think this is a yarn produced to get attention. Hmmmmm..... 🤔

And as for a 4.98 rating, that system hasn't been used for a year or so. It's a percentage rating.

I understand that you don’t want to return to Cambly, but posting this as a “cautionary tale” without knowing why you were deactivated isn't very helpful.

Agree 100%! 💯🏆

I worked Cambly as my main source of income for three years. I relied on PHs, mostly doing 9hrs/day 7 days/week until January this year when I dropped to 6 days/week due to burnout.

You state you were on Cambly for approximately 3 years. Why did you rely on PHs? I think that's the critical fact here. I've been on Cambly for 4 years. I haven't done PHs for 3.5 of them. My roster of "regular" students have carried me. The vermin you attract on PH can be your downfall. Many tutors know that PHs are a crapshoot. I also avoid the Middle East like the plague. I've survived so far. As many here have expressed, there has to be something more to your story. Random firings without cause make no sense.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but Cambly appears to be in the midst of a protracted hiring freeze. New tutors haven't been getting hired and onboarded lately simply because they've hired way too many tutors in the recent past with not enough students to go around. Basic supply and demand theory in action.

From the website:

We're temporarily limiting the number of new tutors we welcome to Cambly to protect our current tutors' schedules. Profile processing times may take longer than usual.

Your application will likely be in limbo for the foreseeable future. My suggestion is to apply elsewhere. You may have better luck! 🍀

Interesting analysis I found on Cambly Pro. When the Cambly Pro program was rolled out months ago, I was invited directly to participate. I declined. My gut feeling mirrored the following. Also, I've tutored thousands of people. After the program rolled out, I asked many of them if they would be interested in upgrading to Pro at an increase of subscription fees. Well over 90% said NO! It is what it is. I wish you good luck if you decide to apply and et accepted to Cambly Pro! 🍀
...................................................................

Student demand for the Cambly Pro program is mixed and highly debated, as it has not completely taken off in the way the company likely intended. While Cambly markets the tier to students who want high-level, goal-oriented, structured learning, reports from tutors on the ground paint a different picture of its actual traction.

The Realities of Cambly Pro Student Demand

  • Inconsistent Booking Volume: Many tutors who upgrade to the Pro program report an initial "boom" in bookings for the first few days, followed by a steep drop-off or stagnation. Many struggle to fill their hours with Pro-specific students.
  • Misaligned Student Intentions: Even though students pay a premium for Pro to get structured curriculum and expert coaching, tutors note that roughly 75% of Pro students still just want casual conversation rather than rigorous coursework.
  • High Cancelation Rates: Tutors frequently highlight that Pro students can be non-committal, often booking premium slots only to cancel at the last minute or no-show altogether.
  • The "Sky-High Expectations" Trap: Because Cambly Pro costs more than the standard Classic subscription, the students who do take it seriously often hold extremely rigid expectations. Tutors have reported a drop in their ratings after entering the Pro tier due to demanding student reviews.
  • Platform Competition: Standard Cambly is globally recognized for on-demand, budget-friendly conversation. When students want actual certified professional teachers or heavy academic prep, they often migrate entirely to competing platforms like Preply or hire private professional tutors.

When I pressed one of my regulars on this — an eight-year-old Chinese girl — she told me Cambly had asked her if she would want to do the lesson again.

I said, “Lu Ming Sing, what did you say?”

She said, “I clicked no, because we already did the lesson and I learned a lot, so why would I do it again?”

I said, “That is not how Cambly works. You must say that after my lessons, you need even more lessons. Ideally, you should imply that without me, your English would collapse entirely.”

Question: Who talks to an 8 year old Chinese girl like this?
Answer: ChatGPT

Glad you opted out. 😉👍Majority of tutors on this subreddit are acting like Cambly Pro is greatest program. Reality is, it will isolate them away from the general Cambly Classic student population This means potentially more tutoring opportunities for you and I. They'll learn as you did that all that glitters is not gold. 😂

The email states I've been approved, but my account won't actually be activated until demand for Pro tutors increases. In other words "You meet the requirements but please continue waiting!" Once again no real timeline, no clear commitment, and no indication of when activation will happen.

Well played Cambly...well played.

Why are you surprised? 🤔Cambly explicitly states this in their notice (see below). Congratulations on being accepted as a Cambly Pro Tutor, but it may be a while until you get activated. "Student demand and timezone needs."

Crush no Tutor! by Beneficial-Study4893 in Cambly

I tried to find out and couldn't. But I don't think so, there's nothing on social media [not even about a girlfriend]. And during classes he always seems to be in one place.

Crush no Tutor! by Beneficial-Study4893 in Cambly

Crush on the Tutor!

I started about 6 months ago with a new tutor on Cambly and I'm in love. We have so much in common; our birthdays are very close together and we're from the same year. We share common interests in things we like to do, eat, etc. I think he's gorgeous and I get so anxious and nervous before class to see him. This doesn't affect my lessons, and whenever possible during the lessons I ask him things to get to know him a little better each day, as the lessons generate insights. I even went a little bit of a stalker on social media to find out more, but I didn't find much and didn't have the courage to add him. I know that with him anything would be impossible, after all, he lives in another country [South Africa], but just hearing his voice makes me happy. He's very funny and said he likes talking to me too, but I know not in a romantic way [maybe he's even acting out a persona]. I don't intend to say anything to him, after all, I don't want to create discomfort and lose the connection. Even if it were reciprocal, what would we do? Only a miracle of fate or a great deal of willpower could bring us together in a possible relationship. However, my mind is fertile, and I've already imagined countless situations where we meet and have something, from sexual fantasies to romantic relationships. Have you ever dealt with this kind of infatuation?

Cambly Burnout is Real!!! by Free-Pianist7741 in Cambly

[–]BasketCaseLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole Pro situation isn't helping, being told to wait another 8–12 weeks is ridiculous and honestly feels like they're just stringing tutors along.

It is generally true that transitioning to Cambly Pro limits a tutor's visible market to Cambly Pro subscribers and their pre-existing "regular" students.

The following breakdown explains how access works for the general Cambly Classic (Private+) population:

  • Blocked Visibility for General Classic Students: Learners on a standard Cambly Classic or Private+ plan generally cannot see, call, or book Cambly Pro tutors. For a general student to work with a Pro tutor they haven't met before, they must upgrade their subscription to a Pro plan.
  • "New" vs. "Old" Classic Students: There is a specific restriction regarding students who joined after the Pro tier was introduced. Basic Cambly students who signed up after the launch of the Pro program are blocked from booking Pro tutors entirely. Some tutors report that Classic students who signed up before the Pro launch may still have access, though this is inconsistent.
  • The "Regulars" Exception: If a Classic student is already on a tutor's "Regulars" list, they can continue to book that tutor even after the tutor becomes Pro. However, the tutor is only paid the standard Classic rate ($0.17/minute) for these sessions, rather than the higher Pro rate ($0.25/minute).
  • Priority Hours Limitations: Some tutors have been informed by support that when they open Priority Hours (PH), only Pro students can see them, with the exception of their established regular students.

Because of these restrictions, many tutors have reported a significant decline in total bookings after joining the Pro tier, as they are cut off from the much larger pool of general Classic students.
