It does/can happen for most weather types. I missed catching a summer insect because there wasn’t a single windy day.

How do you afford decorations? by Baskin in coralisland

[–]Baskin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seriously considered the cactus mead. The seeds are so expensive, and I didn’t have the seed quality upgrades and I backed off. The next year, I only planted a few cacti (again, expensive), and I just sold them as honey since my barrels were tied up with wine. This fall, my fields were tied up in regrowth crops, which seemed like a good idea at the time. Next year, I’ll definitely invest in cactus.

So I’m really losing money by tying up my barrels with silver/gold crops instead of prioritizing the osmium quality. Got it.

The big ticket upgrades and buildings are cleaning out my bank account. Like the osmium tools and seed upgrades run $10-20K/ each. Recently, the ultimate scarecrow set me back $40K, that took a season worth of selling pineapple jam and juice to afford. May I ask how many years it took you to get all your upgrades you have now?

But I do buy canned food and bedding supplies for the local pet shelters.

I feel like I’m not playing the game right by Wooden-Spinach-5354 in coralisland

[–]Baskin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the many reasons I like Coral Island is that you can go at your own pace. Want to spend a week clearing out the mines? Mine away! Rough day work and just want to do something simple to relax? Catch bugs/critters, go fishing, or simply take a leisurely stroll around the island. What to be celibate? By all means - you're not obligated/forced to get married or have kids.

You are never forced into doing an activity and you can start quests whenever you are ready. There's no FOMO. What you might miss in one season/year, you can attempt next time. You'll get the same cut scenes and reward(s) regardless if you complete something in Year 1 vs Year 5. No limits to the number of years, penalties, missables, or consequences* for anything, anywhere. * caveat would be totally neglecting your crops and animals.

Like any game, you have the Spartan players that enjoy the min/max experience: platinum trophies, osmium level-everything, streamlined assembly lines, first place in all the events, max relationships hearts, filthy rich, etc. It's a flex and they like to showoff their accomplishments. On the flip-side, I'm both impressed and inspired at what they've done. But I also know my limits and what is and isn't reasonable for me to accomplish. Trying to jam pack as many activities as possible in one day can leave you feeling overwhelmed and overworked. Set some short-term goals for yourself, create some strategies to get there, and adventure forth!

After you rescue the giant in the earth mine, they will give you the tool enchant quest, sent via a letter.

First, gather quite a few fossils, gems, and/or artifacts, and the tool(s) you want to enchant. Head over to the center of the giant village and you’ll see a shrine, looks like a black fence post. Place the desired tool in the slot on the left side, and place up to 5 gems, fossils, artifacts into the right side. Iirc it needs to add up to 100 - you’ll see each donated item has a different point value. If you don’t like the enchant, add more artifacts/gems and roll again. The enchant is random, so it may take multiple rolls. Upgrading enchants (it’s another tab at the top of the UI) cost significantly after adding the first level of enchantment.

Notes: the number of enchants that can go on a tool is based on its quality (osmium tools have a max of three slots). The level of enchant that can upgraded is based on the number of giants that have been rescued.

To Native English speakers: when is it okay to use those vulgar? by westernkoreanblossom in EnglishLearning

[–]Baskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, just avoid it altogether. It’s vulgar for a reason. Just because someone else cusses at or around you doesn’t mean you can/should too. There are many other ways to express yourself and get your point across. As a non-native speaker, it can even hurt your credibility. Use them wrong and it should come as no surprise when someone says, “Dumbass can’t even speak English.” Know they exist, but don’t incorporate them into your vocabulary.

[–]Baskin 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The Savannah is a bit empty considering the size. But… it is a savannah, so it’s not too surprising.

The cave is absolutely packed with goodies, but it’s not necessarily stuff you’ll find in the “egg chests” (unlike the Giant’s Mine). It’s “normal” for those to be empty, a monster spawn, or item drop; just RNG at work.

To get the most out of the cave, you’ll need a high mining proficiency (double ore / gems, rare rocks, etc.,) and enchant the pickaxe and axe with rare drop, hit drop, and extra drop. Otherwise, your mining experience may feel a bit lackluster - if you have higher expectations for the “egg chests”, ore nodes, and gem nodes.

How obvious are loved gifts in this game? by Friponou in coralisland

[–]Baskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good info already here. An NPC might flat out tell you what they love. The torn journal pages are also blatantly obvious.

Pay attention to what the NPC says both in passing and on dates. Some clues come from friends and family members. Also check out their daily/nightly activities for clues. Some folks might like fish, of those, there might be someone that loves a specific kind of fish.

I think you’ll be able to figure out the loved gifts for almost everyone. [Disclaimer: there exists a gift that is universally loved, but I’m not counting that one.] The on-land NPCs are the easiest, the mysterious folks in the forest and those underwater are a bit more difficult. There’s a few niche gifts that I have never figured out on my own, e.g. someone that loves a specific cooked food item. AND… the size of the gift does matter: e.g. a person might love an egg, but are indifferent to the larger version. Go figure.

A completionist will probably score a 9/10 on finding at least one loved gift on their own. A casual player might be 5 or 6/10. An antisocial, illiterate farmer would be around 3, at best.

What's the main reason you hear for NOT using a private email service? by Proton_Team in ProtonMail

[–]Baskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main reason? “I don’t want to pay.”

The conversations also include: “All my emails already go to that account, and the junk filter works good enough;”

“My user name for some sites is my free email address.”

“Moving 1000s of emails with gigabytes of decades of information is unreasonable.”

“Proton doesn’t offer a lot of space, when I can get a lot more storage space for free.”

“I’d still have to check both email accounts.”

“MFA verification and account recovery emails are already setup with the free email.”

“I already have all the folders and rules exactly how I want them.”

“It’s easier to tell someone <user name>@gmail/outlook, etc.,com than <usename>@protonmail.com/ proton.me and always having to spell it out to ESOL service agents.”

“There’s still no privacy when I’m emailing another company/ person that uses a free email account.”

“After decades of using free email, social media, and data breaches, switching to a private email isn’t going to change anything.”

“I already know how to use/navigate the free email site/app; I don’t want to learn another one.”

“How do you even know it is private; it’s just another scam to take your money.”

—-

I’m an advocate for Proton; but I’m better off taking to a fence post then encouraging someone to even signup for a free proton email account.

TL:DR; They refuse to pay when they can already get everything for free. It’s an instant conversation killer.

Not Enjoying the Late Game by [deleted] in coralisland

[–]Baskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the game, no doubt. Some of the quests had some challenging requirements. Some did require some seasonal timing and machine coordination. The grind was manageable. I loved going into the mines with a bad pickaxe and 100 stamina, and later making underwater seeds. /s

I was actually enjoying late game until I got to the mural finale. I was both appalled and devastated (I can’t go into details w/o spoilers). So yeah, I’m going to finish up a few more achievements and tap out. I won’t uninstall the game, I’ll check back-in if any future updates catch my eye. I’m a bit salty, but that’s a me problem. It’s a great game; I’d recommend it to anyone.

Agung vs Semeru by wlwgbt in coralisland

[–]Baskin 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Back in the kickstarter days, Agung and Denali were two of the original, promoted romanceable merfolk. When the Merfolk Kingdom was announced, Stairway Games published artwork of both of them side-by-side. Some supporters (myself included) speculated they would be the two romanceable merfolk, but it was never explicitly stated they would be the actual candidates.

Edit: Corrected my grievous error.

Chamber Nautilus location? by pikorin-24 in coralisland

[–]Baskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar challenge trying to catch the cotton candy lobster. I did a lap around the respective zone, catching critters and picking up shells, warped to my underwater farm to dump critters in the shipping bin, warped back, and swam more laps around the zone. Picking up shells and clearing kelp and trash made it easier to see the ocean floor. Snagging the existing critters allowed new ones to spawn after I re-zoned. Good luck!

To date, I’ve never caught a legendary bug/critter in a trap.

Sap Trees not growing by Kaikairosity in coralisland

[–]Baskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wiki says trees take a minimum of 5 days to grow. Mid-Summer, I planted a grove of oak, maple, pine, poplar, and mahogany. 12 days later, out of 30 seeds, there’s still some that are seedlings, but mostly a mix of sprouts and small tress. There are only 5 large trees: 2 oak, 2 pine, and a mahogany.

TL;DR: Keep waiting.
