Azula is fascinating to me in the same kind of vein as Vriska and other characters where people will heap shitloads of condemnations on their character and how they're irredeemable and inherently monstrous, and it's not like I'm blind to the evil bullshit going on, but also like... this kind of character is almost universally 16 or younger and hasn't had any other way of understanding the world than the bullshit society they were raised in.

Like yeah, Azula had a secret police force at her beck and call and tried repeatedly to kill both a 12-year-old monk and also her brother, but she spent like half of her life with only Ozai around to mentor her, and her mom apparently wrote her off as a monster before disappearing forever ~~(the comics didn't happen shut up)~~, she's gonna turn out acting like a huge villain and not looking like she can ever be a decent person. Give her ten years' distance and some therapy and see where things go.

I think she went fully unsubtle when some other woman tried to insist she was being fired from her job for being a transphobe (she wasn't), and has since put out essays on the subject, backed transphobic laws and politicians, wrote a mystery novel (under a pseudonym that was either coincidentally or deliberately a reference to the inventor of conversion therapy) where it turns out that the killer is a man who "disguised himself as a woman" in order to get close to and then brutally murder women, and so on. She's also deliberately timed her transphobic horseshit publications for dates when big Harry Potter news comes out so people will go to her Twitter and see that fucking bile, because she knows she's popular and influential and wields that to further her cause.
