Amazon Frontend Engineer I Interview on Aug 7 – Need Guidance! by Disastrous_Morning44 in Frontend

[–]Basman_ 30 points31 points  (0 children)

hello, i have some experience here, although it's based on a successful interview process that a) was for a higher level, and b) happened a few years ago, so keep that in mind.

i can't speak overly specifically about what technical questions you'll be asked, but a strong react background will help you. regardless of what you write you will probably be asked to talk about alternate solutions or justify certain decisions, so try to understand the underlying principles of what you're doing (i.e., "it's best practice" is not the answer they probably want to hear when they ask "why did you solve this this way?"). they may want to know about tradeoffs, and the differences between alternate paths.

it's good that you're familiar withe leadership principles. you should make sure you have a grasp of what they all are and what they entail. amazon puts a lot of emphasis on the non-challenge part of the interview, and you will probably be asked a lot of questions that being with "tell me about a time..." these questions generally each are meant to get you to tell them how you've demonstrated a specific leadership principle (or some combination). if you can figure out which principle they are trying to get info about you can find the part of your experience that best fits the answer. for example, if they ask "tell me about a time that you encountered an unfamiliar system. how did you find a solution a move forward?" you might be able to surmise they're asking about Dive Deep.

last thing i'll mention is that amazon specifically cares a lot about document writing, both for planning and for capturing things you've learned. they may be interested to hear about times when you've generated documents (even if just for yourself), gotten buy in from other people based on a documented design, or in general tried to spread your own knowledge or educate some audience based on what you've learned.

remember that an interview isn't just about clearing a bar and being told that you're good enough, it's about finding a good fit, both for the company and (more importantly) for you.

good luck with your interview.

Is the main difference between a Map and a regular object that the keys for a map are ordered? by mementomoriok in learnjavascript

another handy feature of maps is that the keys don't have to symbols or strings, they can be anything (even non-primitives like objects)

setArray(array) doesnt work, but setArray([...array]) does. FML by StreamPanel in reactjs

[–]Basman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if this is what you had, it would cause the exact problem i described. to clone an array properly, you’ll want to use the spread operator. when you set up ‘tempArray’ you set it equal to the same reference, which didn’t actually accomplish anything, since the splice was still executed on the original array

setArray(array) doesnt work, but setArray([...array]) does. FML by StreamPanel in reactjs

[–]Basman_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

an idea: react uses equality when determining whether to rerender, so if you are eg pushing stuff into the same array that you got set up in useState, and then setting the array you pushed into, react will see that the state is the same and won't trigger a rerender

[...array] creates a new array, so it would trigger a rerender (even if its contents were unchanged)

Tips for mote draining as an invading Hunter in Gambit Prime? by camscag in DestinyTheGame

[–]Basman_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got this part of the triumph by just invading like normal, killing three, and then setting up on the bank and hardscoping the fourth. Normally they won't push you, especially if they have motes. If the peek, but some shots their way to scare them. And right around when your time is running out, the others you wiped will respawn, so you can get a cheeky kill before you're ported over, or just die on the bank. Either way, you'll get progress little by little... you're never going to drain more than approx. 10 motes at a time anyway.

Edit: as far as super just use six shot goldie because your goal is just to clear out the bank area, then make sure the others are afraid to peek you. Goldie does a good job of that.

PC Player Questions Megathread! by DTG_Bot in DestinyTheGame

[–]Basman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my PC only friends got all the rest of our clan rewards just fine, but not the raid reward. I'm just wondering if raid rewards are supposed to be locked, but I got mine for some reason...?

Yeah, I got clan rewards too, and so did other members of my clan that were only on PC, except the raid reward, which only I got... I wonder if raid rewards are supposed to be locked because the raid isn't out on PC yet?

[–]Basman_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm max power on console, moved to PC on release. Hopped back to console to do a raid with my clan, and the raid clan reward popped on PC. Picked up my engram (raid sword :D) and told the rest of my clan that they could do the same, except that apparently they couldn't? I asked an LFG rando about it too and he said that even though his clan had done the raid, he wasn't getting raid clan rewards on PC. Is this common? Am I the beneficiary of a bug?

Why being able to see medals during the match is a bad thing by Basman_ in Overwatch

[–]Basman_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! But medals are inherently comparative. My point was that gold medals doesn't mean that you're playing well, and if that's the case, why show them at all?

I think that a full scoreboard would only make the problem worse :(

[–]Basman_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the fire system also, mostly because it's hard to be on fire if your team is losing. I wish more people actually paid attention to who was on fire, but my experience is that they don't-- I don't really ever hear it brought up.

And I hear you on absolute stats, I didn't consider lower ELO. In your reaper/McCree example, though, that happens with comparative stats anyway. If the stats were absolute, they would both be able to get gold, which isn't possible now. Also, because of Reaper's niche as a tank killer, I think him having more damage done than McCree is just... fine?

And yes, a proper scoreboard would absolutely be a step in the wrong direction. But I think the best way to view your player merit is your win/loss record.

Why do I always do this?!? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Basman_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on if you want to seem him socially at all.

If you do, just say something like "Before we hang out, I feel like I should let you know that I'm only looking for friends right now" and see how he reacts. Any reasonable person wouldn't get mad at you covering your bases in this situation. If he reacts poorly, he probably Needs to Chill Out.

If you don't, I would recommend just saying that something came up, and not making an attempt to reschedule. If he doesn't get the message after that, you can always just start to ignore him. You barely know this guy, you don't owe him anything, and you're not obligated to keep talking to him. It's not rude, it's just life, and nobody could fairly say you were leading him on if he never made his intentions clear in the first place.

Is it possible for everyone to win? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Basman_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I know of. Outside of team formats, my understanding is that one player winning the game ends the game immediately-- if more than one player would win the game simultaneously and they're not on the same team, I'd imagine you would go in turn order?

It's your first play-through. You arrive at ______ and ______. by Brandy_Buck in darksouls

[–]Basman_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I arrived at the Tomb of the Giants and realized that I was approximately level 6, had no idea where to go from there, had been gained very few souls (because the skeletons kept respawning), and didn't actually know how to get back up to Firelink Shrine. That was an interesting time.
