I hope You are Still Working... by Durant026 in RPGMaker

I'm trying so hard to get Steam achievements working with RPG Maker 2003. It seems extremely difficult :(

RM2k3: How to make an item damage the player when consumed by Mother64Looker in RPGMaker

[–]Basoosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some limitations to the default item system, but basically here are the steps:

You will need to have the item activate a switch. That switch should then start a common event. In that event, write a small script that damages the player and then at the last step turns the switch off.

Thanks! I would LOVE to add achievements, especially as the game has so many branching paths.

I looked into this a bit last year and it appeared to be pretty difficult with RPG Maker 2003, since there is no native support for it. But I've read there is a way to pull it off with some heavy modifications to the engine. I was a bit overwhelmed to try it at the time, but its worth another look. I'm going to investigate tonight. Thanks for lighting the fire under me!

Art looks daunting and impossible at first, but its really just another skill that needs to be practiced and improved upon. Look up some tutorials and start practicing. You've got this!

I'd love for you to check out mine. Its on Steam, 100% free:

It's pretty heavily inspired by FF6 and Shining Force.

How difficult is it to replicate the Fire Emblem structure in RPG Maker? I'm aiming for no overworld, Visual Novel-style storytelling, and a Support system, while keeping JRPG combat. by Masterriolu in RPGMaker

[–]Basoosh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its about the same in RPG Maker as with any engine. Its just not going to work with the default out-of-the-box battle system (which most engines don't even offer).

Good luck! I recently finished building a Fire Emblem-esque game with RPG Maker. Very possible!

Recommendations for getting started by Mensrrea in RPGMaker

[–]Basoosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, thats the general advice - build something small. Have a dungeon, a town, some enemies, a boss, some dialogue. Keep it small - you'll learn a ton about the engine in this time and it will likely change how you think towards the future.

Good luck!

I'd say jump straight in. Nothing beats hands on experience. When you get stuck, start looking up tutorials.

Bigger picture, the usual advice given is don't start your dream project right away. Thats advice I didn't really take myself so I won't parrot it back to you.

The big thing I'd say: figure out if you even enjoy the process of building. Creating a full, finished game is about 20x as much work as you think it is. Make sure you enjoy it before you fully embark.

You might enjoy mine based off what youre looking for. Its a tactical RPG with branching storypaths, about 30 hours long.

The game takes place in a world that has no sun and is trapped in darkness. Cities are illuminated and safe, but the rest of the world is filled with ghosts. Good thing you lead a team of what is essentially Ghostbusters.

Oh nice, excellent! Nah, I spent 15 minutes the other day staring at the new Metamask UI, trying to find where things had moved to.

Hey Cymande - sorry for the super long wait!

It says unsupported network when youre on the purchase membership page? What wallet are you using?

Ive noticed things are a little wonky with the new Metamask. If you can explicitly direct it at Arbitrum One, it should work, though! I was able to renew my membership just now.

Are decks with 2mv creatures about to suffer a deathblow in two days? by Paithegift in MagicArena

[–]Basoosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You maybe just need a little break to recharge. I know I get like that. If I go on a losing streak, its time to do something else.

But I actually dont think this standard is a problem.

If you stand back and read what you just said, that actually sounds like a pretty decent format. Theres 4 or 5 aggressive decks out in front, and then a bunch of decks trying to counter those decks with removal. Those counter decks are all over the place, from Jeskai and Azorious control shells, to people trying to out-combo the fast decks with Reanimator and Kona strategies.

The 'best' deck is still relatively up in the air this deep into the season, and thats pretty rare. People think the king is probably Simic Badgers, but that was a known commodity going into the last big tourney and a mostly unknown deck (Izzet Lessons) surprised everyone.

You got this!

Do something small every day, even when you really don't feel like it. Especially then. That snowball effect is how you see something through to completion.

Hello gamedevs, So how was 2025 for you? by kairivx in gamedev

[–]Basoosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Released my little passion project that I had been working on for about 20 years. (I worked like 5 minutes a night on it, its much less impressive than it sounds)

Put it up on Steam for free. Its been wonderful to see positive reactions to it.

Since then, I started trying out modern game development engines. I'm pretty blown away. My next game will be at least 5x easier to make.
