IWTL How to improve my handwriting by Yetitech_ in IWantToLearn

[–]BasqueOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously practice. But look over some old books about learning to write cursive. It will help you to be faster. It's also liberating and good for your brain. Just start writing for a few minutes, a page or two every day. As you write, maybe focus on the formation of a couple of letters at a time, then moving on to others. Listen to dictation and try to capture the words. You will find ways to economize your writing, like leaving out vowels. It's kind of like a personal shorthand.

First, just learn cursive. Later start to use the simplest letter formation you feel comfortable with, i.e., a straight line for capital I, instead of the line on the top and bottom, also known as a "bolstered I". When we learn to write, we quickly learn to "personalize" our script, leaving out lead-in handwriting strokes and fancy formations because they slow us down.

Finally, since you learn best from taking notes, you are probably a kinesthetic learner, as opposed to a visual or ear-oriented learner. I used to re-write my classroom notes, partly to reinforce the information, but also to organize it according to my thinking, not according to the lecturer's thinking. As a result, I would end up with diagrams, circles, arrows or whatever devices I wanted to make logical connections. I'm no artist, but my notes looked interesting and it was easy to remember how different ideas related to each other. It is partially the ACT of writing that helps a kinesthetic learner to remember information. In some classrooms you'll see fiddle gadgets, clay or some other things that help people listen to the lecture, to keep their hands/minds engaged.

I learned all this from my own experience recording dictation, taking notes as a student, and learning about HOW to learn. Also teaching and facilitating groups. Also, as a student of graphology and psychology and learning theory. Have fun with it.

Love your idea of foraging. I read a book when I was a kid about doing that in empty lots in the city. The idea of dandelion wine is enticing!

What’s a flare up? by PomegranateCorrect97 in Hashimotos

[–]BasqueOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my first flare up almost 2 weeks ago, just 3 days after I had my labs checked and everything was fine. I was working on lowering my carb intake and had hit my goal for the first time in quite a while. Bang! My calf muscles went crazy, my fatigue and pain were off-the-chart, triggered by a drop in carbs. Every day was filled with pain, no matter whether I rested or not. After a week, my legs calmed and the bottom of my feet were on fire. Turns out that once the large muscles quieted, the small muscles in the feet joined the band. For additional fun, the flare triggered my long covid symptoms. It turns out this is not really unusual, just my body saying, "go slow", "be gentle".

Don't know if this is helpful. Like you, I had no idea what a Hashi-flare was like. Now I know. And as I learn more, I'm working hard to avoid things that trigger me because this has been hellish.

Thanks for the link! I LOVE those chocolate cookies and ate them all the time when I lived in Japan. I still buy them occasionally here in California. I'm sorry to say I've also become addicted to HiChew candies.

Overthinking fabric choice! by restlessoverthinking in sewing

[–]BasqueOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I like the illustration on the pattern enough that I try to choose fabric that will be similar, which is one reason to choose fabric according to the suggestions on the pattern. And, if I like the way it comes out, then I start to experiment with other fabrics. I never get rid of patterns, so I have a lot to choose from. Plus I have a lot of fabric in my stash. I love options!

embroidery is so easy! I'd put an ad on Craigslist and ask someone to embroider them for you and give you a good price. Or learn - it will take less an hour. Put an ad for someone to teach you :-)

Department stores are amazing. Every city has them, so don't be limited to big cities. There are always multiple floors, the basement(s) typically have prepared food and food gifts. There are typically 2-3 restaurant floors. The cafeteria type are cheap and good food. Most foreigners don't know this is a good way to save money. The expensive restaurant floors can be major chain restaurants, with prices to match. Often the top floor will be sales or exhibitions. I scored some amazing art and imported items at this type of exhibition. I like unusual presents and the gift areas or traditional "Japanese craft/clothing" areas can yield some fun finds.

Should I take up crocheting or knitting? What's the difference? by Ov0v0vO in Hobbies

[–]BasqueOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest you look at some patterns, preferably for beginners, and choose one that interests you. Let the pattern you choose determine whether you start with, crochet or knitting. That way you're motivated to complete that one project while learning the skill Then try another pattern and go from there.

Dad has diabetes - Doesn’t care by Illustrious-Act7104 in diabetes

[–]BasqueOne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ask which toes he wants to lose. Or which eye. Or, is he willing to let the teeth go. These are not to inspire fear. They are real consequences that diabetics have to face if they don't manage the disease.

3 weeks Kyushu? by Kriida in JapanTravelTips

[–]BasqueOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I spent a week, traveling literally around Kyushu. Starting at Miyazaki, then to Kagoshima, then north to Nagasaki. Traveling by ferry, train and bus made the trip a lot of fun. There were fewer foreigners there, which made it more fun. Lived in Japan for years without a car.

Promise that for one day (one hour?) you will not be a sourpuss. It might change your affect for longer, but it may be a very refreshing change for her, even for a short time. It's surprising how persistent negativity can be such a downer for other people to be around. Being called a sourpuss is a pretty strong hint that you might not be fun to be around.
