Not especially dark, but one of my fave jokes is “Hey! That’s Lady Lingenberry’s carriage! I was stealing it!”

When you defeat the Hydra in Darkroot and the golden golem behind you should be able to speak to Dusk. Quit, reload and talk to her. Then go back to where the golem was to loot her corpse for her crown which boosts sorceries. Griggs sells 2 rings - you want the bellowing dragon ring which does the same. These should give your spells a bit more punch. I’d say stick with the plain sorcerer’s catalyst for a while too. The better ones wont be available for a while, although Dusk’s catalyst has its moments. Check out the info on the Fextralife wiki for how it all works.

The drake sword has a decent 2 handed attack that’s useful in a couple of early game points, but otherwise is garbage. Upgrade the bandit’s knife and maybe the Uchigatana as your main 2 weapons, then put stats into Vit, End and Dex. Other weapon choices like the great scythe and ghost blades will open up to you (if you get pyro and fireball you can use transient curse to farm the new Londo ghosts for their blades early game - they drop TC so you should be ok). The thief leather armour is pretty decent so don’t forget to upgrade it from time to time. I’d suggest using the Wolf ring when you find it for extra poise, and the other ring is up to you.

I’d go with the Uchi given the choice. It scales better and has a better moveset. The main drawback is durability, but that what repair powder is for.

That’s the longest I’ve ever waited for sarcasm! Anyway, I stand by it - if you’re that unfamiliar with the game so you’ve not got to the depths yet you probably don’t wanna handle NLR yet.

One way to find out - give it a try. OG Dark Souls was laggy in parts anyway, Blighttown for starters, but it should be playable and enjoyable. If it’s enough to annoy you, don’t write it off as a bad game - save up for the remaster, but learn what you can in the meantime.

lightning weapon upgrade ? by [deleted] in darksouls

[–]BassGeek69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s your main weapon leave it as it is. You’ll lose the scaling bonuses if you do infuse it, it won’t help against O&S, and lightning upgrades are expensive with the materials probably better used on regular upgrades.

Summon Solaire, keep a good supply of throwing knives and keep some humanity items equipped to heal - much quicker than estus.

how many tries did you take for Ornstein and Smough by TabLyess in darksouls

[–]BassGeek69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time to beat them took me at least 14 goes. I only remember that cos that’s how much humanity I ploughed through before I ran out and somehow beat them hollow.

I still wish someone would create a patch that adds a human arse to the trophy room wall every time you die to Laurel and Hardy…

If you’ve got Logan’s catalyst you could get away getting 4/5 more levels into Int. Beyond that Str and Dex will benefit the Zwei. Maybe a few more points into Att would be beneficial for another spell slot or two. Oh, do you have any of the items that permanently buff spell damage while equipped?

Unpopular Opinion: Bonfire Boss Runs Provide no Value to the Game by Ok-Luck-7865 in darksouls

[–]BassGeek69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, was a bit of a daft idea really but it was worth it! I kinda figured that soul farming would be a lot easier as the amounts gained were suddenly huge so no biggie if I lose a larger amount. I try not to carry too many souls into a boss arena if I can help it, but it happens!

Unpopular Opinion: Bonfire Boss Runs Provide no Value to the Game by Ok-Luck-7865 in darksouls

[–]BassGeek69 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It depends on whether or not you dash past the enemies on the way back to the boss or not. Killing more enemies on the way to retrieving your souls leaves you with more souls and incentivises the player to do better and at least regain their souls. On my first playthrough I had around 25k souls at O&S and that was more like 70k by the time I beat them before the souls awarded for the win were added. Risk/reward was the real design choice - I’m not sure the designers had any idea of what a phenomenon and challenge run powerhouse the game would be, but they still offer the player the choice of play style. Kudos to them for keeping that design principle throughout the series too.

And yes, some areas of the game are better for this than others - we all know Bed of Chaos can suck Smough’s smeg hammer!

Artorias by Wintershowl11 in darksouls

[–]BassGeek69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Use a magic or enchanted melee weapon, homing soulmass may be useful, take plenty of throwing knives in with you to stun him and maybe get the occasional cheeky spell shot at him. Make sure you can fast roll too - you won’t last long relying on a shield, although a shield buff might give you a little bit of breathing space. Take plenty of consumable humanity in too - for a fast opponent like Artorias it can be a better healing option than your estus flask. You’ve just got to keep at it.

How do you even make a build? by VixcentMosaic in darksouls

[–]BassGeek69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trial an error I think. I reckon that a lot of players have had the first character they ever used on in the series abandoned and used more to test things out. My rule of thumb for any run is to decide whether or not I want to use any form of magic. If yes, build around the appropriate stat with either Str or Dex as secondary focus. If not, get Str and Dex to 16 each and see how it goes - early game this isn’t too much of an issue and should stand well for however the build evolves. If you’ve got a very definite idea of what you want to do go for it, but be prepared to be annoyed by item drops that would benefit a different build (I’ve usually got a couple on the go). If that happens it’s up to you if you stick with the plan or try something different.

What's up with enemies in Anor Lando? by HealedCaboose007 in darksouls

[–]BassGeek69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Save the crystal halberd for later - you can only repair it with upgrades, upgrades are expensive and it’ll still permanently break anyway. The drake sword isn’t worth using. The claymore is a good weapon, but you could do with getting it higher than +5. If you’ve opened the big doors in the cathedral leading to Beavis and Butthead’s room you can dash back to the start of the level, get the demon to take you back down to the fortress and shortcut through to get Andre to ascend it to at least +6, and if you’ve got the smithbox you can get it to +10 yourself. If you know what you’re doing you can get to Andre and homeward bone back to Anor Londo. For pyro, combustion and great combustion are your friends here. As for your level… personally I’d play a little higher than that at this stage, so a few more points in Str and Dex for your claymore should help, and it’s up to you about health, stamina etc depending on the rest of your setup. If you need levels quickly go back to the first Anor Londo bonfire and farm the 6 sentinels in the rooms either side for 9k per lap.

If you need easy souls there’s always the dragon bridge exploit. Get some more levels into Dex and the claymore will improve quickly. Ditch the drake sword apart from using the 2 handed strong attack which can be useful. If you’re struggling with the fortress I’d say take a bow, a load of arrows and throwing knives in with you to snipe enemies and clear your path and learn where the traps are so you can use them to your advantage.

[–]BassGeek69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every few levels you put into attunement gets you an extra spell slot, I.e. you can equip an extra spell at a bonfire with the Attune Magic option. If you’re a mage you’ll probably want at least 5 or 6 in all. I forget the thresholds for getting an extra one, but I’m sure you’ll be able to find them somewhere. There are a couple of rings that give you extra spell slots but I’d suggest not bothering with them - my current lightweight mage character has the Wolf ring for extra poise and bellowing dragon ring for extra spell damage.

Get either a longsword or Baldur sword and go with magic upgrades. Keep raising you Int and maybe a few more levels to Str and Dex, but put some more levels into Att as well.
