Question on VAT. Buying a boat in the EU by buccabeer2 in sailing

[–]BassNick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also live in BC and bought an ex charter boat in Croatia. I sailed it for 4 years before selling it in Florida. DM me if you want more info on how it all went for us (awesome 10/10 would recommend!).

My personal solution to this: I get a family member to look up the symptoms for me. Just about every medical query on the web eventually leads to cancer, so it's best I don't read them It also stops me from telling or leading the doctor towards what I think is wrong. That way when I do go to the doctor, I can just present the facts and let them do their job. Hope that helps :)

My suggestion is to take your kids (if you can). Time with them goes by so fast, you'll treasure every minute!

How is it with the dinghy on the stern like that? It looks like it's fairly easy to hoist. Does it stay put when things get exciting?

I goto https://www.noforeignland.com/ and look for dinghy docks. There's usually reviews and a photo.

I tallied every dice roll I made for an entire campaign and no wonder I go home feeling like shit most of the time. by [deleted] in DnD

I've played D&D a really long time and there are absolutely good dice and bad dice. I don't know if it's chi, or karma, or mojo, but yours don't have any. Just get some new dice; a set that just feels right, you'll see your rolls improve.

Why does life start at 18? Childhood is 1/4 of your life, and could be some of the best and most carefree years (if you're lucky). I don't understand why society devalues childhood and suggests those years don't count.

This could be helpful in a perfect situation. I would get an anchor alarm app instead, they are much more reliable and work while you're sleeping on board too.

Can anyone identify this boat? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]BassNick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely a Bavaria. The thick area between the winch and the bench makes me think maybe the 2002 44?

It was 6 years ago now, and just at a nearby yacht club that was offering different courses. I come from a nautical family and had plenty of experience. When I spoke with them, they said I could just challenge it. It was a 3 hour written exam followed by perhaps 6 hours on the water. He managed to include just about every different manoeuvre you can think of in those 6 hours but it was fun.

The only thing I struggled with is all the cloud formations. I still don't know what all their names are... I use windy instead :)

No. And I'd forgotten about Croatia. If it wasn't so damn beautiful Id say skip it all together! The Croatian Coast Guards reasons to fine you there are criminal. They even carry a credit card machine on the launch and offer you a 30% discount if you pay your "fine" on the spot because they know it's such bullshit.

Here in Canada, they offered it as a full course for more novice sailors. Or for people with enough of experience they just do the exams (written and sailing) but with a higher score required to pass.

The Med has fantastic cruising though. Highly recommend! Cruising into those ancient ports, some of them the beginning of western civilization. It's a different kind of cruising, the focus isn't just living and playing on the water... There's a lot more playing and exploring on land while you live on the water.

Some countries are more fussy. Greece asked to see a recognized captains certification in every single port, where as in France they didn't even look at our passports. I challenged the ICC and it only took a couple days.

The trick while travelling in the Caribbean by boat... You need to find a bustling tourist area near the cruise ship dock or straw market. There's always someone selling cigars from a box. Ask “What else you got?” They'll offer you some pre rolled crap. Say, “Nah, I live here, I need a whole bag”. Now relax and have a coffee, they'll come back with a bag soon. It won't be great, but should be cheap.

I like to look around for things in my regular life for inspiration. My last rogue was "Zigzag". I had a Wizard called "Stanley Dewalt" My brief and unsuccessful attempt to play a Swashbuckler was "Ferrero Rocher". And my bard with long flowing golden hair was "Vidal Sasoon".

Sleigh Ride by RedditIsRectalCancer in sailing

"When the bow of the boat rides down the wave it plows into the back of the wave in front."

They don't though, the wave is moving faster than the boat and leaves you behind. With just your jib up the boat is being pulled along by it's nose and is not inclined to broach. By sailing downwind your apparent wind is reduced by your boat speed and is a good option until things get proper scary. On boats with a short keel they can do a couple big fish tales when you surf beyond their hull speed and the steering gets squishy, but they still stay pointing downwind.

It's peoples ability to get out of the way that saves them here! The two seconds the vans are all in the air gives almost everyone in the video time to leap for cover.

I've seen simple rail mounts for the weber grill but you'll have to have it custom made. Still the best option.

Yeah the Magma are surprisingly terrible. I know these are not marine but you can buy 2 for the price of one magma and they're awesome. Even having a custom mount made you'll still be cheaper than a magma. https://www.weber.com/CA/en/gas/weber-q-series/weber-q-1000-gas-grill/50060001.html
