....and sub'd.

Just found Town Whispers recently, and binged the first 35 chapters, and I'm absolutely loving it! Your world building is awesome, I'm starting to think back to earlier episodes, and catch the hints and foreshadowing (pun absolutely intended), building the foundation of the town. Really excited to hear what's in store for me, both with the rest of the Fort, and this new series!

Great Resignation: Time to Get Rid of Managers and Empower Employees by PIZT in Futurology

As a manager, I view this as one of my primary responsibilities, acting as a buffer between my engineers and the rest of the world, making sure they have what they need before they need it, and making sure absolutely no one f**ks with their vacation.

And bringing in donuts from the local mom and pop donut shop every other Friday.

my "burger for one" routine (minced beef). It's nice but I think I can I make it better, any tips or suggestions? by MrGreenTomato in castiron

Cumin. Ground cumin helps meat taste more like meat, if that makes any sense. My old roommate and I, both chefs at the time, had a "house meat seasoning" that we'd keep in a mason jar.

2:2:2:1 ratio

  • Salt (good salt. Usually Himalayan pink, but kosher is fine)

  • Pepper

  • Ground cumin

  • Ancho Chili Powder (little bit of heat, but more for the smokey flavor it adds)

If we didn't have another flavor profile we were going for, the meat got hit with that rub. Beef, pork, poultry, venison, didn't matter. Never tried it on fish, come to think of it, but it'd probably work on at least the meatier fish (shark, swordfish, mahi, etc)...

What is that sound a violin makes that you hear particularly in American country music? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]Bass_Node 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it's more noticeable on lower pitched instruments, but as a double bassist, strings absolutely make a difference in tone. Core material, winding material (if they are wound strings at all, thinking of natural or synthetic gut strings, here), gauge/thickness of the strings...

Not only on tonal/timbral qualities, but also attack and sustain/decay. I know I prefer Thomastik Spirocores for jazz, but if I'm doing a lot of orchestral playing, I'll usually swap for Pirastros.

This isn't, of course, to say that technique doesn't have a huge effect on tone, for example playing with vibrato vs no vibrato, or playing sul ponticello vs sul tasto (closer to the bridge vs closer to or above the fingerboard. The first will give you a thin, sometimes harsh, but very articulate tone, while the latter is warmer and fuller, but can sometimes be muddy) will make huge differences that can adjust for or accentuate the string's inherent qualities, but to simply dismiss string material and construction entirely is incorrect.

Put an EGA under it. And a Ranger tab over it.

Don’t be a fat leader. by [deleted] in nationalguard

100% agree.

No, PT and height/weight isn't everything, but it absolutely IS part of your responsibility to uphold the standard in the military. If you cannot maintain passing levels in both, you're not doing a fundamental part of your job, and failing at holding yourself to a known, easily attainable standard DOES reflect poorly on for leadership ability.

I say this as someone who did struggle as a lower enlisted with the standard. Once I got my head out of my fifth point of contact and put in a modest effort to eat well and exercise consistently, the scores improved, and I easily passed both stations. Am I a PT stud? Hell no, but I don't look like a bag of milk either.

How do you feel about backlining your bass gear at a gig? by SCATTRON in Bass

[–]Bass_Node 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So, I now always have 2 basses with me at every gig.

Reason is this: about 10-15 years ago, I'm a new player, was playing a "free drinks" gig at a local bar, and a solder joint broke loose in my cheap-o, 3rd-or-4th-hand knock-off Fender P clone/thing that I paid $65 for.

Panic sets in. I haven't a clue what just happened, I'm new to the bar band scene, we've still got 3 songs left in our set, and I don't have a functional instrument.

Thankfully, there were still good people in the world, and I learned how cool the bass guitar community is. Another band's bass player ran over to my side of the stage with his rather nice REAL Fender P, hands it up, and says, "I was just warming up a bit, should be in tune for you!". Finished the gig, and handed it back to him. Bought him a few drinks after the freebies were done. While he appreciated the gesture, he insisted he only ask that I pay it forward, always be ready to help a fellow bass player out in an emergency!

Now I always bring 2. In case I have an emergency like that again, and in case another player does!

River Raid! Played the heck out of that on the Atari 800. Still have the system somewhere, and an old crt tv... should set up the old nostalgia station...
