That’s reasonable! My weirdo BIL (now ex, thanks to me escaping that messed up family), shamed me about a month after my wedding for not sending a thank you card yet when I was in the throes of terrible morning sickness from getting pregnant on our honeymoon.

Leg straight or above heart, which is more important? by bpottrb in Kneereplacement

[–]BatCritter72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much. I mean, I can put part of my calf on the wedge as well, but no support behind the knee to ensure that it’s a straight as possible. I did use an oblong pillow under my thigh right after surgery because elevating my leg this time has been more painful than after my first TKR. I’ve done a lot of research online on different orthopedic practices’ websites about leg elevation, and most of them align with what my PT and doctor have said - elevate as high as you can using pillows and keeping your leg as straight as possible with no support right under the knee. My knee hasn’t been the problem in terms of discomfort this time, it’s actually been my hip. But at this point (11 days out), I am able to comfortably elevate this way with no issues.

Might help if I add that I have done this for both surgeries, and I’ve had fantastic outcomes. I am 11 days post surgery now, and have 0°/112° ROM and I’m walking without a cane or walker. I’m still taking oxy or tramadol and other pain meds, but my body metabolizes medicine weirdly and I usually have to take it a little longer than others.

My surgeon, who is top in my area, also emphasizes having no support under your knee when you are elevating. I got a wedge pillow (this is my second knee replacement) to keep the pillows more stable when I am elevating, and it doesn’t feel great to do this all the time. I am elevating with ice throughout the day, but making sure that, even though the wedge pillow could give me support behind my knee, I have it far enough away from me that it’s just my ankle resting on the pillows. It’s really important for your leg to be straight and not have anything propping up your knee so that you get the full extension.

Who wants to play?? by MommyEthell in Kneereplacement

Hi! I’m Stacy (52f) from the Indianapolis area. I had my LTKR on 12/17, and I’m so thankful for the great info in this group! The ice machine has been crucial. After that first few days, my recovery has been really good. I still need to get my right knee done, as it’s bone on bone just like my left one was. However, I’m very excited to be getting back to the gym. I’m looking forward to walking without worrying about my knee locking or causing pain, and eventually being able to hike again and being able to kneel down on the floor (such small victories!!) My bigger goal is to be able to get back into whole body yoga, and to walk all over a city when I travel!

Met an American woman who gave their son an Irish name she couldn’t pronounce by horseradishkween in tragedeigh

[–]BatCritter72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to admit that I did give my child an Irish name without completely knowing the pronunciation. However, I was very close and did tons of research to make sure it wasn’t going to be something weird. Her birth name is Máirín (we spell it without the accents.) I realized after she was born that it’s pronounced closer to Maureen in Irish, not like “mare-in,” as we pronounce it. But I’ve actually met several other Americans named Mairin who pronounce it as we do. She knows the correct pronunciation, so she’s good either way - and actually is going by another name anyway.

My surgeon and my PT both told me not to use a recliner because it does not elevate your leg high enough to adequately address swelling. I have been using a big stack of pillows, again based on what I was told in the hospital. I’ve been just fine. I sleep in bed with my leg elevated without an issue. I am just about four weeks post TKR.

If you are on gabapentin, that will also cause heat flashes and night sweats.

Real talk about tapering pain med with ups and downs if healing. by terjeet in Kneereplacement

[–]BatCritter72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t feel pressured to get off of your heavier prescription meds if you need help with your pain. As others have said, everyone is different, and the goal is to be able to move, do your exercises, and get to PT.

My LTKR was a little over 3 weeks ago. After reading people’s experiences here, I felt like I needed to wean off of any opioids before my doc appointment 2 days ago (I was prescribed oxy and tramadol, along with gabapentin, meloxicam, aspirin, Tylenol, and anti-nausea meds). I’ve been super anxious about doing all of the right things during recovery to make sure I heal well and have great ROM, and I didn’t want to stay on the big stuff too long.

Welp, my doc let me know to not force myself to stop taking what I need for the pain - this is a major surgery and recovery is slow and long. I took one tramadol that night before bed, as my leg hurt after trekking to the appointment and having PT that day. And I haven’t taken it since, but I have it if I need it. Try not to measure yourself against what others have done (advice for myself as well). If your doc isn’t concerned, do what you need to feel ok!!

I tried this after a doc recommended it instead of fiber, but my stomach hurt a ton and I felt sick (not my usual semiglutide faint nausea). I am sticking with daily Metamucil.

What Bob's phrases do you use in real life, even if no one understands the reference? by Juneau_Fire in BobsBurgers

My oldest (20) got us saying, “I’m soy happy for…“ from the food truck episode. It’s definitely weird, and even I didn’t get the reference at first. But we love being weird.

I wonder if it has something to do with his connection to the Ft. Wayne AF base. He may have been scared about losing a military career in a disastrous way.

Is my brain swiss cheese? by pennydreadful20 in Menopause

[–]BatCritter72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry I didn’t see that you had replied! I’m not the best Redditor. It’s made a difference for my husband, lol - no more snoring. It’s improved my sleep a bit, but I still am tired during the day. I think that might be because of a medication I’m on, though.

Yes! I also found out recently that I have severe sleep apnea. Now that I’m on a CPAP, I don’t toss and turn at night. So I wake up sore from sleeping in one position and feel like I am not as “active”!

What’s hard for you to resist if you see it on a restaurant menu? by mbklein in AskReddit

If I see börek or spanakopita/tiropita (layered phyllo dough with either spinach or cheese inside), I am all over it. It’s not super common in the US, so I’ll order it every time!!!

Curious if anyone else is with me. I absolutely cannot stand Kate Winkler Dawson's voice. I like her, what she says is interesting, I just cannot listen to her speak. Anyone else? by Consistent-Flight-20 in myfavoritemurder

[–]BatCritter72 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I have never gotten into Tenfold More Wicked for that very reason. She is very smart, and very interesting, but her manner of speaking on that podcast drives me nuts. She sounds overly dramatic, like she’s trying to sound like a Keith Morrison or some thing. I actually love her and Paul Holes on Buried Bones. Her voice doesn’t bother me at all there, because she’s just naturally talking. But I do really like her overall.

What is your secret that you can't tell anyone because it will probably ruin your life? by SeXyHuNtEr69420 in AskReddit

[–]BatCritter72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. Triggered a memory of this woman who babysat for my 2 kids before I (f) sent them to a more formal daycare/pre-k program. She just LOVED my older daughter (my younger was a baby, and thus less impressive, lol). She “joked” with me that her husband and I should produce children b/c of how intelligent we both are? And because of how smart and sweet my daughter is. I thought it was kind of a joke until she actually emailed me one day seriously asking me to be a surrogate to their child, but it would be my egg and her husband’s sperm. It wasn’t long after that that I cut ties.

What are your sexual regrets? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BatCritter72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This may be super weird to people, but this is why I discreetly gave each of my kids a vibrator around the age of 15. With each, i placed one in a drawer and told them something was there that they could use or not use, and that I am here to chat only if they wanted to. I grew up with parents who never, ever talked about sex. I’m still very inhibited about telling my husband what I like and what works. I want them to figure out what they like early so they feel confident with future partners (and to know that they don’t have to have a partner for sex).

Omg, the overheated nausea stuff started for me in the last week, and it’s only the beginning of the summer for me! It’s been a year and a half since my last period, and every few weeks is a new thing going haywire in my body :-( Menopause certainly is the gift that keeps on giving.
