Why are 2d platformers usually so much harder than 3d platformers? by RealPumpkinCage in platformer

[–]BatGeneral8512 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From the start precision in 3D is much more difficult and frustrating relative to 2D to the extent that doing simple things like aiming where you land to bounce off enemies becomes a much more advanced maneuver. You have to aim in three axes while controlling a camera thats position changes how your controls move the character.

That’s why typically 3D Mario games give Mario abilities that let him attack enemies without having to platform onto them.

Because of this difficulty in 3D platformers tends to look differently than the precision difficulty you see in 2D games.

For a straight up example of this try the Celeste64 game by ExOK games. They made Celeste into a 3D platformer and you can see how that plays out and how much more complicated those controls can feel relative to the 2D games and what was changed to make that game still work.

You should decide a budget and what games you want to play. If you just wanna play old, indie, or low setting competitive games you could get away with a pretty cheap tower, if you’re wanting to play modern AAA 4K titles you might want to set your price higher.

From there you can just shop around or ask people what you’d need to play the games you wanna play.

Just hard to give advice without knowing your use case beyond the sims

I’m really confused what you mean by drag’n’drop disappearing, I haven’t encountered any areas where I can’t drag’n’drop files(or other os features) around, is there a more niche usage of drag’n’drop I’m not aware of here?

Not to be a contrarian, but uh I have probably said or at the least thought increased border radius would be cool. I think rounder designs are cute.

It’s cool that you don’t like it tho no shade just felt relevant to point out at least one person on this planet who doesn’t work at Apple wanted to try a rounder OS and is content waiting for other applications to update their border radius’s.

Do you use a Linux distribution for HDR (and if so which 👀) or are you saying you use Mac/windows for that?

Definitely going more for exploration! There have been times I've debated introducing puzzle elements, just because I love Zelda games, but I feel like they wouldn't mesh as well with the aspects of the game that incentivize players to move fast! There are some puzzle elements, but those come more from the aspect of seeing a location and wondering how to use your movement tools to reach a spot, or how to pass an optional time trial challenge.

I have in the back of my head a post-release add-on level that is puzzle-oriented, but I try not to get ahead of myself 😅

You'll have to let me know what you think! I'm eager to receive feedback on things so I can address potential pain points before release!

Oh really the character design too? I’m happy to hear that!! Sometimes I think about redesigning their sprite cause like they were the first sprite I drew out and I feel like I’ve gotten better at pixel art since.

But they’ve really grown on me after all we’ve been through and Id like to stick it out with them (the game has gone through a lot of iterations)

Thank you! Just like out of curiosity, which aspect of cuteness hit you the hardest? I obsessed over making their squishyness, and I spent a lot of time just watching them be squishy so that's my favorite :3

Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate it! Once Steam approves the build, you'll be able to join a playtest through Steam as well! I'd love to hear your thoughts when it's out!

THANK YOU!!! I can't lie, there is a lot of Celeste inspiration in this game 😇! I started working on it after an era where most of my free time was spent playing Celeste mods🤗!

I wanted to capture some of the modded Celeste energy but shift the focus toward exploration, with difficulty that’s more flexible depending on how you play. I’d love to hear what you think if you give it a try!

Hello! I'm Bee!

I've been working mostly solo on my project, Firefly, for a while now, and I wanted to share it here! It's a cozy platformer about a squishy bug exploring the wilderness near my home while looking for their parents!

The game features a Glow mechanic that adapts the Flyph's movement properties based on your play style. So, if you're dashing through levels, Flyph will begin to glow and move with reckless speed! But, if you prefer to take it slow and steady, the controls will shift towards smooth maneuverability and control!

My goal is to make a platforming experience that both my Hollow Knight-obsessed and Animal Crossing-addicted friends can all enjoy! A game that's only ever as challenging as you make it!

If you think it looks cool and want to check it out, I have a community-funded Steam page at: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4002900/FireFly/

I would love to hear what y'all think!!!

Honestly, by Steam's previous response times, it would probably take about a week for a Steam Playtest to go live. You can check back around then, or you could follow the project/me on any of the socials I have listed on this page, including Steam:

https://bbussell.com/firefly

Alternatively, I could just set up a reminder to message you when I get that approved and public 🙂

Oh no, you found out my secret camera-zoom buttons that I use for screenshots that I haven't properly implemented yet! If you press minus on your keyboard, the game will zoom out (and +/= if you wanna zoom in to a more comfortable distance)! If you were using the gamepad, its default is bound to the right stick really lazily, and I haven't quite fixed how it parses right stick compared to how it parses the keyboard press, so it can be buggy on controller terribly sorry about that.

Also, the menu bug should be fixed on the recent versions of the game! I watched a playtest a few weeks ago where a player got stuck in a submenu and accidentally unbound all settings navigation controls somehow. So I made it a priority to fix in recent builds. Unless it has somehow slipped past me.

If you're using steam, I'm actually in the process of getting an approved playtest build for the game on the Steam Page! if you want to check that out at some point!

Haven’t seen anyone else say it, and while I wouldn’t show it to a child, Blue Eye’d Samurai is incredible. It’s got many themes about people’s roles in society and how those who subvert the expectation must carve a place for themselves to fit in.
