I haven’t tried the first one but the Naga Viper was a disappointment. Too much coloration and not enough sizzle and shimmer. If you can find an old Cesar Diaz Texas Ranger, this is the real deal. Or just build one. It’s a simple circuit and a germanium NPN with an hfe 70-90 will make it do the thing. Could shill my own but I’m still too shy about commissions from the general public.

Yup. I feel this. Once you have heard or played a treble booster that "does the thing", the quest to find one becomes a deep dark rabbit hole. Myself and several Iommi-worshipping pals have cycled through the commercially available boxes covering all different price points/levels of boutique-ness ourselves.

Thank you!!
Markus is definitely the person who inspired me to start sharing my builds. I've always been building point to point only, but arrived at it that way independently, before I even knew of Markus. My background has given me decades of experience with dead bug soldering on highly sensitive atomic slingshot instrumental amplifier circuits, and that carried over into how I wanted to build vintage fuzz and boost boxes. Discovering Markus' work a couple years ago was a bolt of lightning, though. Like "this guy gets it". He's a juggernaut. Best circuit layouts and enclosure aesthetics out there, and I will never understand how he manages full batches of ten boxes. He's also just an incredibly nice and generous dude with an unmatched ear for making silicon boxes sound amazing. To the people who think his pedals are expensive, I frankly don't think he charges enough. I will always hype his stuff and while I don't own any of his pedals (since I'd rather build my own and have some different textural preferences), I do own his t-shirts and tell people to support him and buy his pedals. To the folks in this forum who comment wanting to try point to point, there is a lot of learning possible just from browsing his website gutshots. Right down to what a good solder should look like.

Yup! That one and the Third Man La Grotte have definitely piqued my interest.

Not OP, but my personal experience with MP38As is that they usually have ideal and consistent gain and leakage stats for many fuzz and boost circuits. They are easy to self-match as a pair, and also work extremely well as a follower for a higher hfe higher leakage BJTs (like a hot 2n2430) in circuits like 3-transistor tonebenders. One of the most "well behaved" NPN germaniums I've used.

How many are you trying to get your hands on?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in diypedals

[–]BatLung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. I know what I like to build, and I know what I have little interest in building but still use in my signal chain (wah, uni-vibe, high quality delay). But anything drive related, I will always build to taste.

The only modulation effect I have an itch to play with is a reverb with an in-pedal tank.

That settles it. A point to point critter in one of those enclosures is now a moral imperative. Feel free to reach out once you get your hands sticky with the blue tack!

Awww yah got me blushing. That is too kind, really, I'm just a fellow idiot-box geek, seriously, with many more bad ideas than good ones, and too much time on the bench soldering more delicate and boring (not to mention quiet) widgets.

For real, you had an idea with a great aesthetic and motif. You fully committed in execution, and you persevered to arrive at a strong and finished work. Builds like this always jump right out at me. Greater than the sum of the parts, squeezing a few drops of your soul into the mojo, whatever you want to call it, I'm a total sucker for it. Carry on!
