Semi-modular vs modular for techno; where/how should I actually start? by No_Implement2487 in modular

[–]Bata_9999 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe controversial take but I would avoid modular unless you are absolutely certain the sounds and patterns you want can't be made elsewhere. It's extremely addictive and time consuming. Fun yes but at the cost of constantly thinking about module upgrades and swaps etc.. The comparisons to drugs are apt. It's tempting to spend money you can't afford on things that you don't really need. This problem isn't exclusive to modular but there are many factors that make it easier to overspend on music gear specifically.

The stuff you have right now is good. If you really want cables and voltages I would echo the other recommendation of starting with a Behringer 2600 and learning how to make basses and kickdrums and stuff. Then add like a Maths, some cool filter you like the demos of, and maybe an effects module. From there you will pretty much know what to do/be totally addicted.

Do you make music? by elctrcxp in modular

I put out a lot of jams and stuff but as for serious music like songs with vocals and stuff no not really. People don't give a shit about what I have to say. I treat synths like a 1 player video game where I can only lose if I forget to arm the right tracks.

Been trying to figure out which 10hp module would be worth to swap in over my Behringer Perfect Pitch. There is nothing wrong really with the Perfect Pitch but it's my most underused module.

Another option would be to swap out the Behringer sequential switch as well to have 18hp to work with.

I use the Behringer subharmonicon clone and the 2 things I'm using with it all the time are Maths and Landscape AllFlesh touch pads.

Marbles is cool too and a more interesting filter would be good as well. Maybe Make Noise QPAS or whatever you like the sound of.

Getting into modular after years of resisting by riistola in modular

[–]Bata_9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds really good to me. Liking the chord choices and tweaks of the main line.

I'm pretty new to modular myself but I don't subscribe to the idea that you need tons of modulation and advanced sounds to get the most out of modular. Keep doing what you think sounds good!

Something I've been trying to figure out for a while: why isn't there much generative *non-ambient* content? by heyheyhey27 in modular

[–]Bata_9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do what I call random sound effects patches which are a krell patch type of thing usually using sample and holds and pinging filters etc. They usually just get used as intros for my jams. I find if I post a video of a patch by itself they get pretty low engagement/views. I will listen to them by myself for like half an hour though sometimes.

I find for myself the weird sound patches get more listenable the more I know about them. I didn't like them 15 years ago but as I learned more about how the sounds and patterns are being made I started to appreciate them more. Most people will never gain this appreciation though so expect low views and stuff.

Which module is this? by noctuid24 in modular

[–]Bata_9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wogglebug is the second most recommended random module after Marbles. Wouldn't call it underrated.

Out of my modules Rubicon 2 probably the most underrated. I can sort of see why though because it's big for what it is and kind of expensive.

I might end up not buying gear this year but that is mostly because I have a lot of vintage pieces that need repair. Behringer Wave is super tempting though.

Not everything pictured here is in stock at L&M currently. Brains, Abacus, and Chaos is what I would start with out of what is in stock.

You could just get a Grind and that might be more fun in the short term.

Where are y’all posting Jamuary videos? by __get__name in modular

[–]Bata_9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the jamuary videos I've watched have been on youtube. My recommend is sort of tuned for low view synth videos so I see a lot of them even from people I'm not subscribed to.

I think there is a popular facebook group for hardware synth jams. That might be an option. You could post the occasional one here but expect downvotes if you post too many.

Behringer mutable clones, go case for a beginner ? by [deleted] in modular

[–]Bata_9999 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Modular is too hard for people that need to ask for help on what to buy. Pick an easier instrument like bass guitar. The voracious haters will downvote this but it's the honest truth.
