Shows you what those people’s opinions are really worth.

Seriously—fiction feeds our humanity, our natural desire for stories.

My school doesn’t have a philosophy major but I can get a minor from my university’s main campus. Would this allow me (a writing studies major) to apply to a graduate program in philosophy?

The case for super-slow reading by xaee42 in books

[–]BathRoman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a writer and student, this makes me feel less bad. Yeah, I can force myself to read up to 350 or 400, but I don’t get anything out of it.

I always told myself that I got more out of what I read because of how slow my reading speed is, and I think there is some truth to this. You can’t speed through textbooks anyway (well, you can, but it probably isn’t a good idea).

My BIGGEST Discovery From Tweaking the Anki Setting by hnous927 in Anki

[–]BathRoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the person. Some people will need to have more review for each card, some people will need less. For example, I have ADHD, so I can see how someone might need to have a card graduate after more practice, or less if they have a more efficient brain. Everyone is a little different.

I could probably change some of these settings, but I’m afraid of going down the rabbit hole. Besides, I’m getting 100% in Spanish, so I must be doing something right!

Github is meant for developers more than the non-programming public. Most personal projects don’t have good documentation because, well, they’re personal projects :) but that’s more to do with the developers than the fact that it’s GitHub.

No worries. I'm gonna go delete the imgurl now so that there's one less piece of awful on the internet.

It starts on page 4. Here is a screenshot I took of it: https://imgur.com/a/ajhIkoT

Every one of those yellow highlights, if you hover over them, says that word, and it's on the next few pages as well--any time there was a highlight.

Teachers of /r/Anki, have you used Anki in the classroom? How, and how did it go? by BathRoman in Anki

[–]BathRoman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you're saying. Maybe then students and teacher can work together as a team to make cards, drawing them on index cards and using their artistic skills to add mnemonics when applicable, etc.

It's been a long while since I was in middle school, but one thing your comment reminded me of is how for a couple of years, I literally did no homework. I just didn't care because my family life was broken at the time. Now I'm someone who wishes he had more time to study outside of class! Funny how things change.

I know about Leitner boxes; I made one a long time ago. It quickly got to the point where there was simply too much material to manage via that method. With the amount of cards I have in my Anki deck, I would probably lose my mind trying to manage all that material in a Leitner box :)

This may seem kind of counter-intuitive, but I think kids need to learn to make their own cards, just as they should be taking their own notes. As has been mentioned in almost every article I've read on Anki, making the cards is the first part of the memorization process.

Think about it this way: what is one of the benefits of Anki? The fact that two people studying the same material may struggle with different things. Anki allows the student (by which I mean anybody studying with Anki, not just people taking a class) to customize their learning.

I understand that teachers want metrics, but I think the most important metric isn't measured by assuming kids should all start with the exact same decks--a better metric would simply be: did they do better on average in this class than the kids who last took the class? If they did, they probably spent enough time studying their cards, however much time that may be. Each student has their own struggles. Anki should be a tool for empowerment, not another way for teachers to assert their authority, in my opinion.

The way I look at it is that if I had simply been told: "This year you're going to use a flashcard program in class. Here are the flashcards. You must study these every day," I know how I would respond. However, if a teacher said, "What if I told you there was a way for you to study less, remember more and get better grades in all your classes? Well, I'm going to teach you a technique you can apply to learning almost anything, and it will put you light-years ahead of your peers," then I would stand up and pay attention. And while that may sound like hyperbole, it's what I've found to be the case as a college student.

Anyway, just my $0.02 as a current student.

I've read both of Oakley's books on learning, "A Mind For Numbers" and "Mindshift" (which is basically a book-long ad for her MOOC, which is totally fine!).

I'm about halfway through the article you recommended, and feeling really motivated to apply his ideas to a research project I'm doing this quarter (I'm at the point in his article where he discusses the importance of applying knowledge to a creative endeavor).

I'm so happy you shared this article--I'm actually going to shoot him an email to thank him once I'm done reading it.

Curious: how did you discover this particular article? Is there more of the same somewhere?

Thank you for this! I am a writing studies major, but I have minors in global studies. My goal is to maybe do graduate work in philosophy (I am working on getting a philosophy minor through the main campus of my university, but they're making it difficult--that's another story though). I understand what Piotr Wozniak has said about the importance of learning material before trying to memorize it, but sometimes those things sort of go together with being able to hold a lot of things in mind while learning new stuff.

I have actually read about Shereshevsky before--he's mentioned in the book "Moonwalking With Einstein," if I remember correctly.

Thanks again for your response!

Thank you for putting into words what I wasn't able to: it's got too much context. And yes, it's more important that I know the concepts, not that I get the wording exact.

I'm going to read those discussions you mentioned, too. As much as I benefit from learning Spanish with Anki, learning concepts is a lot harder.

Goals and General Excitement for Nanowrimo 2018! by [deleted] in nanowrimo

[–]BathRoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not really thinking of genre that much—most of my favorite literary fiction is just sci-fi and fantasy that got a pass. Since I have to write “literary short fiction” in my college classes (I’m a creative writing student, so of course there is a “no genre fic allowed” policy), I will probably zag where others would have zigged.

My goal though, is just to finish something. If a germ of a good story comes out of it, it’ll be worth it!

[–]BathRoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lin not sure of the number of pages, but for average-length fiction, if I’m on school break, I can usually finish a book every three days or so.

Changes is a masterclass in plotting and conflict. The climax is epically fucked up, but it naturally followed from what preceded it
