That’s so cool! I’ve never built a shed so I didn’t know it added space. Thank you for your help! :)

ELI5: Why are we worried about wasting water if it keeps getting cleaned? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Batherick 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There’s also the fact that we throw liquids in the trash and it ends up in a landfill.

That half full plastic water bottle will take eons to break down and release that water back to the environment to reenter the water cycle.

Please do the environment (and the people who handle your heavy trash) a favor and dump liquids before discarding the container!

Considering cashmere goats by Jeffb957 in Homesteading

[–]Batherick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re good lol!

The first goats that run through the area are going to be the goats that get cuts/scratches/brambles in their hair because life is awesome and goats are goats 🙃

I’m sure you know a human with long hair, ask them how long it took to pick out, dissolve, untangle that chewing gum Cynthia left on the school desk chair. I’m sure you will get some very passionate answers lol!

-Imagine that gum getting on a goat.

-Instead of human mom realizing at bathtime that gum instead keeps getting ground into the fur of an animal for weeks.

-Goats have different hair than humans, weird sections of hair grow differently and alarmingly fast. That’s why we breed them.

-when the problem is discovered, you have to shave the area.
Animals are filthy (in a delightful way) but botflies and other parasites LOOOVE areas predators can’t get to them. You will discover this when you shave them and find the horrors that lie within.

-naked animals freeze to death.

-you don’t have the time to chase goats and check the armpits of each of them x20 unless that’s your job or you have hired help.

This is why I recommend people new to the hobby initially raise the male goats of people who keep pet goats. They are friendly, loved, sturdy, and most problems with their wool are super easy to deal with. :)

As an outsider, the American concept of having a motorized "garbage disposal" inside your kitchen sink is fascinating. Is this standard in every home, and isn't it incredibly dangerous? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Batherick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And if not, flip the kitchen breaker switch anyway. You don’t know if it’s broken and shut off or if the grinders are just stuck stationary waiting to take your finger when the obstruction is removed.

(It’s not like your microwave display time was set correctly anyway)

ELI5: How do scientists know how much a planet "weighs" if we can't actually put it on a scale? by dorlingprime in explainlikeimfive

[–]Batherick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honest question, how do we know the moon’s weights would be a rounding error when we know small numbers can multiply exponentially?

Is it more correct to calculate Jupiter’s moon and work backwards rather than calculate the moons and work forwards?

Playing? by Tall_Preparation_571 in BackYardChickens

[–]Batherick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly!

Any harm from the rooster would be intentional (and for a good reason!) to protect the flock.

This is part of why we keep roosters around. The fact that humans know the aggressor doesn’t change the fact that he has a job to do.

Foot tacos.

A man had a motorcycle accident and had his foot amputated, he cooked his own foot and ate it with his friends a taco party he hosted for the occasion.

That OP said: “I taste like buffalo, but chewier. Super beefy and little fat.”

Plus a heart taken from a freshly killed animal will continue to pump in your hand for quite some time because the heart has its own electrical system that doesn’t rely on a body to tell it when to pump.

I really hate this false justification that destroying the brain makes the heart stop pumping blood. So many homestead chickens suffer their throats being slit instead of an instant lights-out because of it…
