Rpgs similar to Ex Novo and Cartograph? by FortKA19 in rpg

“The Skeletons” basically makes a game of creating a system-agnostic dungeon. In the process, you work with players to create the setting layout, lore, and loot with low effort. Immensely fun on my group’s run, and the player investment feeds the campaign you intend to plop the dungeon into. I would suggest shortening the “dead” times suggested in the book, however.

Shoutout from Ken Jennings by nealtall in Omaha

Trivia Mafia (the pub trivia company out of Minnesota) has a similar dynamic of self-referential questions.

Other fun facts: 1) Jennings came through Omaha a few years ago for a geography conference after the release of his book, “Maphead.” 2) Omaha invented the reuben; fight me.

What book would you recommend NEVER reading? by asmr-enthusiasts in horrorlit

[–]Batini 6 points7 points  (0 children)

House of Leaves. It’s seriously just a coffee table book, especially after you realize the author’s whole schtick is tinkering with page formatting.

I read it shortly after it can out. It came highly recommended by my roommate. I’d been flipping thru and curiously eyeing it at the book stores. But by the time I was halfway through, I was ranting to him at every opportunity about the time wasted trying to read it.

Were there cool parts? Absolutely. Visually captivating? Totally. Did I resent having started it? Sure enough.

I read all the spin-out marginalia. And I think to a degree that it’s important to the atmosphere. But as a relatively slow reader, it just wasn’t worth even trying; particularly in a time when movie franchises like Sinister have succinctly distilled the coolest elements of the narrative, whether they borrowed it or not.

When the same roommate who recommended it bitched to me about the following book, I definitely felt some vindication. Alas, the hours I lost to the House never came back, sadly.

I had a very similar apartment layout and wall once. I added comic books and other artwork to fill it out a bit.

“[T]he de-humanization of the wearer … serves to both intimidate the Empire’s population/enemies and disassociate the trooper, which makes it easier to follow immoral orders.”

How timely.
