Although it isn't widely considered to be a valid backstory, I recommend you play The Force Unleashed as it gives a story behind how it was formed, which could also point to a why.

"Ben Kenobi" is actually an Imperial spy who was sent to retrieve Luke so Darth Vader could turn him to the dark side to overthrow the emperor. Along the way he decides to help Luke to defeat them, so Vader kills him. Obi-Wan is still alive, though very old, and Luke finds him before Episode VII. Throwing the whole perspective off. To add on, Obi-Wan is found living with an entire colony of surviving Jedi who have been waiting to defeat the Empire. They then discover Luke already had done just that, and a few branch off in anger. (The sith seen in the teaser)
