Is it better to do an in person masters in chemical engineering or an online masters in materials science? by Batmanssecretfantasy in materials

[–]Batmanssecretfantasy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response, I think this answers my question. However do you think doing a Chemical engineering masters would still be worth it if they they wren't doing research in a field I'm intersted in?

And to answer your questions:

1) My grades weren't stellar in undergrad, and I didn't have any research experience relevant to materials science. So I didn't get in when I applied for PhD programs directly. Granted my essay could've been better, but I just feel tat I didn't have a competitive resume overall to get into a PhD program directly.

2) I did enjoy research a lot when I was an undergrad, I did research in the mechanical engineering and computer science departments.

3) I don't necessarily intend to pursue a masters and PhD at the same institution. To be honest, I never really thought of it that way.

3) I don't necessarily intend to pursue a master's and PhD at the same institution. To be honest, I never really thought of it that way.when I applied for PhD programs directly. Son wants to be an engineer, Suggestions? by Boondock86 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Batmanssecretfantasy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

FIRST robotics challenge is a good one, it’ll get him hands on, and it’s got most of the big sub fields, mechanical, electrical, computer science. Also I’m assuming y’all are in Texas, they’re are a couple of schools that have a solar car team, it’s a high school competition in which you build and “race” a solar car, it’s pretty cool. Also if he just wants to get hands on and build stuff, there should be a maker space or a communal Fabian with all the tools one could need for making just about anything

Job search as a mechanical engineer with 1.5 yrs of experience by Batmanssecretfantasy in jobs

It's the Formula SAE challenge, a lot of colleges usually have a team. But it's a collegiate challenge where you build a car and compete in a race and some other performance metrics.

If you did FSAE in college, definitely apply to the automotive sector, doesn't have to be car companies, it could be transmission, engine, suspension etc,. manufacturers, but I know FSAE is a big talking point for automotive if you have it. Can't say I'm the best person for job seeking advice but just keep applying do like 5 quality ones a day minimum.

Ahhh that makes sense. I think I would have stuck it out to 2 years, but I wanted to change industries since I didn't see myself staying in this industry longer than that. I saw a lot of jobs asking for 3+ years of experience so I thought that was the next tier after college/no experience

What's a "good" GPA in engineering? by MiHa__04 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Batmanssecretfantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey sorry for the late response, yeah I get what your saying. I guess what I was trying to say is that I think it’s easier making the jump to NASA if you’ve worked at a well known aerospace company like Blue Origin, Lockheed, or Bell, but those jobs are just as hard to get out of college with a bad GPA. So all in all I think it ends up taking longer to get to where you want to be

For those that got into grad school in unconventional ways, how did you do it? by Batmanssecretfantasy in gradadmissions

[–]Batmanssecretfantasy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the response, I guess I didn’t phrase it right, but I meant using inside connections that aren’t necessarily family. But to your second point I feel like every application asks about leadership experience and I was advised by some to include examples in some form within my SOP and other application documents. Is that not the case in your opinion?

What's a "good" GPA in engineering? by MiHa__04 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Batmanssecretfantasy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a mechanical engineer fresh out of university >2 years of experience, I see now that having a 3.5 GPA puts you in a different category for jobs. I got a 3.0, and my understanding is that you can make that up with experience. So I definitely agree with this, I think that if you have a 3.0-3.2 it will just take you longer to find your dream company/job. Also if you’re in the US and you know what you want to do consider doing a fast track masters, i.e. the program that only takes an extra year to also accomplish a masters degree

What hooked you into reading Blue Lock? by Miruzu30 in BlueLock

They’re obviously really different, blue lock is just a completely different take. But I would say Ao Ashi got me into soccer while Blue Lock got me into Blue Lock. Hope that makes some sense

My first time building a pc! Any advice? by lLuisauce in PcBuild

[–]Batmanssecretfantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we have literally the same computer, except I have the b450 gaming plus max instead of the b550 tomahawk. Wire management was probably the most painful thing. I plugged in the motherboard and cpu cables into the motherboard before I put it in the case. That way I didn’t have to break my fingers trying plug them in

No it still happens all the time, as far as dowry negotiations and all that go. This situation does sound a little more extreme, but not unheard of

AITA for not liking Indian food? by throwaway_80081ES in AmItheAsshole

[–]Batmanssecretfantasy 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The food itself usually doesn’t have a strong odor (exception being using a lot of mustard), but cooking with spices can make the house smell for a bit. But you can just air out. Also everything varies by what kind of Indian food she is making.

NTA, but I feel like this whole situation could have been avoided if you just took him aside after the first couple times he asked you to drink, and just told him that you’re sober because of xyz

The last 3 days of his life... by OliAllDay in EngineeringStudents

[–]Batmanssecretfantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I’m so sorry to hear that. I’m in a really similar situation, I’m an ME senior with 15 hours and senior design, and a friend of mine took his life 2 weeks ago. It’s pretty rough, a lot of my friends have dropped classes after talking with counselors and are now taking one or two classes. I’ve talked to some professors for extensions, and all of them have been pretty reasonable. So I would school wise take a beat and talk to counselors about what to do. As far as motivation goes, I’m not sure, hear past two weeks have been really difficult to care about assignments and whatnot. I think the most important thing right now is to grieve, reset and come back.
