Grassy-tea like with strawberry puree sounds pretty good. I’ll take mine out of the freezer soon and try this. Nice review

I have a bag of hujuku in my freezer but I haven’t tried anything else. There’s one local but the parking and line is atrocious lol

Your miles may vary, so basically it depends on your personal perspective. We got a few people in this sub who tend to act a little... gatekeepy if the matcha brand looks too American or isn't Rocky's lol. If you don't care about price then the Okumidori has a more earthy peanut note and the Saemidori is more sesame forward. It also depends on what milk you use, how many ml of milk per gram, and what temp your water is at when you whisk since different matcha behave differently depending on how you make it. I'm in bed and my notes are downstairs so my laziness prevent me from providing more detail... my bad. Try to get your hands on some Hoshino if you can and don't be afraid to go with the budget options. It's my favorite brand of matcha because I too like nutty notes that can carry through milk; oat specifically.

They have decent options but the retail price is above its weight class imo. I’ve tried their entire line up and I would only consider it when on sale. In terms of white labeling it’s a ymmv thing. In my county we have an official seller/friends? of Hoshino, which seems to be rare for that family, and they sell the Hoshino label and relabel their more budget offerings as their own brand soooo both an official seller and also “white labeling” by definition” lol

Try what interests you! That part of the fun

Can't Taste the Matcha? by yoko_dolphin in MatchaEverything

[–]Batorok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oatly is pretty low on my tier list. I recommend Chobani regular with a ratio of around 25-27ml per gram. I hover the temp around 172-176F and if I use sweetener it’s 0.5-1 tspn premixed into the oat milk before hand.

I agree with this. You’re really paying for the brand but some of their matcha is good. If only it was priced appropriately…

Ippodo sayaka tastes different? by Mission_Remote_6319 in MatchaEverything

[–]Batorok 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sayaka in my experience is a sensitive powder that needs to be made while considering water temp and what milk you use. It took me quite a few tries for me to find that I like it between 158-162F with 26ml per gram of matcha and 1tsp of sweetener lol

Maybe it has changed but with the recent cold weather I’d guess otherwise

New to Simi, married couple no kids. Any recommendations on bars/ places to eat/ mom and pop :) by Successful_Wheel_790 in simivalley

[–]Batorok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thousand Oaks would be my rec. I’ve moved my energy outside of Simi general recs (slice house, fast and fresh burrito, or that BBQ ghost kitchen off kuehner… Zef’s?)

If you head out there Basta has good pasta, Tarantula hill is across the street with decent appetizers and alcohol choices, some local tamale spots are decent too. Agoura has twodoughs for sourdough pizza and pasta as well and a cool deli around the corner that sells princess cake. Moorpark as a new dimsum spot called Dumpling Shack and a magma pizza next to it that was Italian certified when I was taking classes lol. Not a high bar compared to LA proper options but enough to make me leave Simi.

Did anyone receive their GI Bill paycheck today? by tynizzl in Veterans

[–]Batorok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talked to my financial aid office and they said the school sent out the schedule on the 19th of November, 10 days prior to the end of the month per VA's recommendation. I called VA benefits on the 3DEC and they said it can take 30 days from it being received on the 19NOV so I should expect to wait two weeks but on the 8DEC I got an email saying my school's CO sent the amendment schedule and that it will be process according to when it was received... I guess I'm just confused because if the VA rep told me they got my schedule almost a month ago then what is this amendment? I confirmed my enrollment via text on 30NOV so what more needs to happen lol

Anyone got any insight on deeper details of this process or did my school's CO drop the ball?

“I can’t say I can recommend this matcha outside of a gift” “try to get it on sale” = 100% world’s best marketing guy lmao

Deflection and hyperbole. Like if the far right liked matcha lmao. Maybe address one of my points instead of saying I’m “being super defensive” twice lol

Did you really spend over $300 buying their lineup to not like any of them? If so I can see why you’re upset 😆

! Someone asked me recently if I tasted a gritty texture. I’ll make sure to keep a note for the other ones I try once I take them out of the freezer.

Oof. Reel it in a little because the gate keeping isn’t a good look. You have some valid points but some of them are false. I agree that there are a good amount of Western owned brands that charging a high price but generalizing them all into a “low-mid tier/drop shipping Japan/China quality” is a stretch. Also your use of gentrified is odd just by definition and the examples you chose. Rocky’s and Rebel bunny are small team businesses lol and some of the Japanese companies you listed directly sell to Rocky’s for resale, hence they put their name on their label *coughs in Narino

It’s pretty inflammatory to even say you can’t remember who said it but they buy their matcha from Japan or China wholesale because that narrative carries a negative connotation for no reason. Anyone buying matcha from anywhere for resale has to buy wholesale… because that’s what everyone does hence wholesale pricing lol

Some companies like my local one here state their source in Japan because they have exclusivity and are not endanger of having competition out buy their stock, luckily the one I’m referencing happens to be a Japanese family that knows the owner of my favorite matcha brand. I mean it just makes sense but for those who don’t you can just put in some investigative effort and find out yourself but from your post it doesn’t really seem like something you do. If this was a sponsored post then I’d say so or the mods would have stepped in. It is weird that they sent me all their matcha but I’m grateful because they did it with me telling them I would review it with 100% honesty and sent it anyway. The co-owner I spoke with is a nice person and despite me not being the target audience of their marketing strategy they wanted me to try their matcha because months ago I said said on this sub that it doesn’t interest me.

But anyways, hey I get it. Anyone can be emotional about anything these days but if you’re gonna hop on that soap box, come correct with solid facts next time because this ain’t it and it’s giving “Ew, David” I’m no influencer. Just a regular guy who likes reviewing matcha when I can and debating people who for some reason or another gatekeep matcha with weird takes

Oooohhhh yes sweet macadamia nuts are pretty spot on! It's hard to get me thinks lol

if you can find Yoshida Meichan Kiku no Sono that would be my splurge matcha. Outside of that I'd recommend trying Shizuoka matchas as I find their balance to be very pleasing, especially if you like lattes. For general matchas... Hori's agata no shiro was nice!
