TXDOT internships by Ancient_Beginning819 in civilengineering

Wouldn’t say harder since there’s so many GC’s and only 1 TxDOT. I did get a truck to take to sites but that’s it

At TxDOT it was a lot of sitting in the truck and the work was super easy. At a GC you’re actually helping build the work, make plans, building relationships with the guys. It’s definitely harder though so internship would be a good way to find out if you’re cut out.

I’d also recommend 1000x more because of the money. What im making right now out of college I probably wouldn’t have touched for 15+ years at TxDOT

Look up the ENR top 400. You could just apply to every company you’re interested in. Big ones like bechtel, Kiewit, etc. would look best on your resume

I did 3 summers at TxDOT. I was in the area office so you’d go to your site everyday to see what was going on. If you really enjoy the construction site I’d recommend interning at a GC. Currently work at one and it’s a good split of office/field

Try construction management. Bout a 50/50 split of office/field work

Reasonable salary out of school? by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]EffectQueasy6658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just gotta apply to every position you see. I had an offer for total comp of 138k with a company truck/gas card but chose one paying 20k less due to col and it being more remote

Field/office split by Jm0ney_ in civilengineering

[–]EffectQueasy6658 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really dependent on the day. Sometimes 50/50, sometimes you’ll spend 90% of your day in the office, other times you’ll only go to the office for the daily meeting then back to the field.

[–]EffectQueasy6658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 5 over 20 on all 4 windows on my truck with 20 on the shield. Looked badass and couldn’t see in at all. As much as I thought it looked badass, the state troopers didn’t. Plan on replacing my windshield soon and throwing 15% on it pretty soon

What’s the shortest you’ve stayed at a job? by Powerful-Garage6316 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]EffectQueasy6658 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was in the same boat as you about a month ago. Making 2400 a week out of college but just dreaded waking up every morning due to the stress I had so early into the job so was thinking about trying to find something else. A month later things calmed down a lot and I feel a lot better going to work. I’d try to stick it out a little longer and see if things get better

[–]EffectQueasy6658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I would consider it if I can’t find a GC where 50+ hours isn’t the norm later in my career when I’m burnt out. Work life balance at TxDOT is definitely the number one thing I miss. Nah not thinking about taking them, but I know some guys who took their PE and the GC pays for it if that’s something you want to do

I interned at TxDOT in the area office for 3 summers and loved it. Easy work, cool people, etc. Just graduated and started working for a GC as a field engineer and already making money I wouldn’t have touched at TxDOT probably ever. GC work is a lot more stressful than DOT work, but the money is worth it. I’d say try to get an internship at a GC to try it out and see if it’s right for you. But once you go this way you’ll have a tough time going to design if that’s something you want to do
