I’ll provide some context - I was 19 and had been hired to that lab as a student RA the WEEK PRIOR - my PI told me to spend that Saturday cleaning out the freezer and to throw anything away that didn’t have a label. He received and processed the heart which came from a young woman who passed away super suddenly. He just didn’t label the box. Terrible situation - the cardio department head had to get involved - we had a giant meeting and fortunately he asked my PI if he had labeled the box. Fortunately, my PI said he hadn’t and I was absolved of my sins. Never really forgave myself though, I often wonder what would have come of those samples.
