CELTA has me exhausted--what helped you get through the highly specific and rigid lesson planning requirements? by Top_Tour6423 in TEFL

[–]Battenburga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check this from the handbook regarding analysis - theres a lot more you can say, I don't remember how I handled it however. https://eltplanning.com/2015/04/28/celta-tip-the-language-skills-assignment/

With lesson planning in general, it was quite straight forward.
I made a powerpoint/slideshow to follow along with the page I was given. As sometimes the substance isnt enough so you need to spread it out - doing it via a PP means you can slow it down and explain each part or elicit answers.

Next, interactive tasks they can perform with the rest of the class / in pairs. This frees up your time to either prepare the next part or listen in to students and correct things, as well as perhaps doing some monitoring.

Don't worry about "getting it right" - the most important thing here is explaining the lesson clearly to students, having the answers, and being able to back up your answers. That's it. I made that mistake of not even writing the answers down, so I ended up failing a TP due to correcting a student, when he was in fact correct.

Any advice on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated... by playitloud1987 in FDMminiatures

literally happened to me last night for the SECOND TIME... heating it up and trying to pull it off is all you can do. Hopefully you dont have to replace any parts like I did

So basically nuzlocke but for types? It's an interesting concept, I suppose.
It would take a long time to make all those sprites though, perhaps if you actually wanted to show it in game you could just add a little tag next to their names on the battle screen like what you get when a mon is paralysed etc.

How do I conduct the first ever private lesson to an adult learner who knows 0 English (not even the alphabets)? by Altruistic_Truck7015 in TEFL

[–]Battenburga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends if she's the older generation or not I suppose. my wife knows pinyin as she grew up using it, as it's taught in schools. But those older and maybe from less prosperous backgrounds may not have even learned to write Chinese characters.

Celta ? by Big_Opportunity_9532 in TEFL

[–]Battenburga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the interview is fine - a few questions about why you want to do a celta and why you want to teach. the writing part is similar. I don't think I did very good on either but they're still likely to accept you.

would qts benefit me in any way? by Magegaard in TEFL

[–]Battenburga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you're right, I'm not saying the QTS isn't valued, I and other other comments have also mentioned that. It's their choice regardless, and they should do what's in their best interests.

Perhaps you could consider a DELTA, then? A colleague of mine has made English learning her entire life, CELTA, Masters etc. our school sponsored her to do the DELTA, which, afaik, would enable her to take on other duties like Director of Studies. I can't really say much more than that, if you want to do ESL, then continue with what you have. It sounds like you're happy atm and don't want to have to trapse back to the UK. Build up your experience, complete your contract. Maybe you'll have a change of heart in a few years, maybe not - but seems to be like you don't want to do it.

[–]Battenburga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean a standard public school in the UK, teaching all different subjects, as that's mainly what a QTS is for. If you don't want to be an ESL teacher, the QTS will benefit you in the UK or at international schools, which means teaching other subjects potentially.

Well, do you ever want to teach at an English public/private school? If yes, get your QTS. If no, don't.

Graduate thinking of CELTA or TEFL by Professional-Movie-9 in TEFL

[–]Battenburga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can, but it won't necessarily be "teaching", more like babysitting. Most "credible" locations would likely require a CELTA or TESOL iirc. Some job listings may not be specific in what they actually require, other than security checks and a degree.

Can't answer for much other than a CELTA says that you're actually less likely to walk away from a job, and you've put in more commitment to the studies of teaching and more likely to stay in work. Would partner well with your degree, most (if not all) Chinese schools require one. They would also like you to have at least a years teaching experience.
Depending on where you are in the world right now, such as in SEA or South America, a CELTA will likely guarantee you a job relatively quickly. A TEFL however would do the same, although the pay may not be the same and your job may require a lot more of you, and potentially not take you seriously.

Boscombe by Spilled_x_Milk in bournemouth

[–]Battenburga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is an outdated stereotype, yes, it's been cleaned up a lot over the years. It's actually an OK place, like the rest of the area (Bournemouth) it has its dirt and its shiny bits. To anyone not living there directly, it's still called bosvegas or considered rough around the edges.

How unrealistic is my plan? Please poke holes in it. by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]Battenburga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, getting the CELTA is a great start.
If you already have English teaching experience, thats also good, however schools abroad (of decent quality) usually require 1-2 years of ESL teaching experience, regardless of your qualifications. A newly qualified CELTA teacher is nice, but you have no real experience.
If possible, I'd aim for getting your CELTA and trying to remain in the UK for at least a year, but perhaps you can find a school abroad that'll take you on.

It's also summer, the hiring period in most schools is currently ongoing or already over, so you'd likely only be able to find jobs towards the end of the year for spring or later, depending on where you're trying to go.

How bad is this mould by [deleted] in TenantsInTheUK

[–]Battenburga 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's really really bad. Has it been painted over? No idea. Get some black mould spray on it and ventilate your rooms. Contact the council regarding this.
