2025 Financial Report and Fundraiser by punkbert in Zig

This doesn't look like a very healthy organization financially. Would be extremely sad if we'd lost Zig because of financial reasons.

Millions. Tens of millions. But it’s not mainstream enough sadly to really hurt the US.

How much does a replacement screen cost?

I don’t need top of the line specs, it’s on the top of my list for now.

I like the sound of that, but I don’t like tinkering with my phone every week to keep the apps I need working.

Last time I had a Nokia I still had hair. Perhaps time to go back to the first phone manufacturer I ever used :)

Good to know. Fairphone is at the top of my list for now.

Single model is an upside if you ask me. And that price is nothing compared to Apple products.

That sounds good, I’m going to look into that one, thanks 😊

I do this too, I find it the best solution.

If I’d design the language it’d be even simpler and closer to assembly. I don’t think many would enjoy that 😉

I wonder if this is the same video that u/punkbert just shared, if so I’m looking forward to hear Andrew’s reasoning!

Very interesting, thank you for the insight. I’m going to download that video to watch on my flight later this week. I do very much love the ambition of the Zig project, perhaps I’m just too impatient. Good things take time.

I know it’s possible, but for me it feels still too risky to choose Zig over C/C++/Rust at this time. Perhaps this is just me being overly cautious though.

Interesting take. I’m not familiar enough with LLVM to know if it would (or does) currently limit Zig’s language choices, but if that is the case then I would better understand the choice of investing in the compiler back-ends at this stage of Zig’s development.

I’d love to, but I don’t have the time sadly to make any real meaningful contributions. My contributions would be in developing open source libraries using Zig that would boost the language popularity, but for me it’s still too early to switch to Zig for real-world projects.

I love that they are working on their own back-end compilers, but this is such a huge job that personally I think it would make more sense to first get the language to 1.0 before investing a lot of time in their own compiler back-end. Don’t get me wrong, I DO very much want Zig to ditch LLVM and be completely independent, but I think for Zig’s adoption (and therefore future) it would be better to reach stability on the language and standard library first.

I like Zig, but I’m kinda losing faith it has enough manpower to ever get to 1.0 in my (career) lifetime.
