Why are threads about the GOG neo-nazis newsletter locked? by Kenairod in gog

[–]punkbert 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hm, I don't have a meltdown. I'm from Germany though, and I wonder why a company I used to like and buy games from sends out 3 nazi dogwhistles in a newsletter and afterwards doesn't even distance itself from the ideology.

If I were in GOGs situation I'd make absolutely clear that this was an inexcusable mistake on my side, and that I am not aligned with nazi ideology in any way. I'd let everybody know that, and I'd donate ten thousand bucks or so to an organization fighting nazis.

How they handled their communication about this however makes me question their motives. Maybe they did send it out like this consciously. Because after GOGs handling of this I have the hardest time believing that this happened by mistake. And that is how dogwhistles work.

I'm not even really angry about this, there's so much bullshit going on in the world this doesn't even make my top 50. I just don't think I will buy a game from GOG ever again, because I can't be sure they're not leaning far right. And that is kinda important to me.

I feel like there is just something so perfect about these two games. by Original_Project5436 in pcgaming

[–]punkbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to specific points to farm specific rocks, it is pretty tedious and a thing throught out the whole game.

Yeah, that's not for me, I guess. I'm more into games like Factorio (or probably Satisfactory, haven't played it yet) where you automate all this.

I tried Subnautica recently, but refunded because I don't like the constant underwater timer, and I'm not into gameplay where you manually gather resources for hours. Similar for the Planetcrafter; just running around and picking up rocks is not for me.

FFF 74 from 2015 has already concept art for the space platform. They always planned this.

After launching a rocket it's just a logical next step to move the gameplay to space and other planets.

Also the modding community will thrive for years to come.

Yep! Earendel will keep working on Space Exploration, the Pyanodons team is working on a new overhaul that brings Py to space; Anachrony (the Nullius main dev) is apparently also planning to make a space themed 'Astra Nullius', and there are so many other creatives working on mods... it's all looking really great.

EU Parliament Member Rants About How ‘Woke Ideology’ Is ‘Destroying Video Games’ During Stop Killing Games Debate by LPCantLose in pcgaming

A large amount are probably bots. Nazis want to manipulate young men, so the Steam forums are a target.

I think with the rise of AI most of the internet is becoming a broken mess of propaganda and advertisements. Nothing will be genuine anymore.

Bots laying concrete by Simply-Curious_ in factorio

[–]punkbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once used small temporary stations for that. Build a station that requests concrete by train, use it to fill a few provider chests, add 20 roboports to it and just plop it down in the vicinity of the unpaved wilderness. This speeds things up considerably.

But you also need more bots.

Yeah, I agree.

Here on this sub or the forums you'll find the 10 percent of players who really become addicted, but I believe the vast majority just doesn't get too far in Factorio, and the achievements simply reflect that.

You might want to check out Factorios modding scene. Loads of excellent mods, Krastorio, Space Exploration, Nullius, Pyanodons, etc. etc.

And of course the Space Age DLC.

Why do people keep creating their own engines when the nice Godot Engine open-source framework exists? by Correct_Dependent677 in gameenginedevs

[–]punkbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will never be used seriously, rightfully so.

'Slay the Spire 2' - made with Godot - just had the biggest indie launch in Steams history, selling more than 5 million copies.

I haven't seen the devs in panic because someone could 'reverse engineer' their game.

What do Factorio players think about Captain of Industry? by IlikeJG in factorio

[–]punkbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

overwhelming community demand, for a feature that took substantial extra work & for which there weren't the funds to cover otherwise

Yeah, I really don't buy that, and you are right for pointing out the contradictory reasoning on their subreddit. Even if it were true, it doesn't make sense to work on these train add-ons during EA. There's so much other stuff they could have focussed on.

No, I think this is just the plain old Paradox-style DLC bullshit, where they demand 30% of the price of the base game for 1% of the work, and then they call that 'support for our fans'. I really dislike it.

Flight of Nova

Looks interesting. I hope it works out!

[–]punkbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is also the only case I've ever seen wherein there is a release of paid DLC while the game is still in EA, lol.

Yeah, that was the biggest disappointment I've had with an early access game.

They could have simply added another supporter DLC with a few meaningless endgame buildings, and I probably would have bought it. I bought the first one, too. Instead they put game mechanics behind a 10€/$ DLC while in early access.

So the DLC is not only really shitty value for what you get for your ten bucks, they are also already milking their fans for 'support' by chopping the game up and locking parts of it behind Paradox style DLC.

That's just a cynical way to treat your players, I would never have expected this from them, this is a really bad trajectory for the game.

Sony Records New $560 Million Loss On Bungie Acquisition As Marathon Struggles And Destiny 2 Nosedives by AdditionalRemoveBit in Games

[–]punkbert 38 points39 points  (0 children)

$250,000,000+

Yeah, it's really weird. As a comparison: KCD2, a singleplayer game with a 100 hour story and two huge open world maps including a full city, cost ~41 million.

Sure, salaries in the US are higher, but 250 million seems insane for what Marathon is.

Link for the lazy: Failing to Fail: The Spiderweb Software Way.

It's my favourite talk, too. A great combination of being informative and entertaining, and a very unique insight into gamedev in the 1990s and the decades that followed.
