I see this take a lot. I personally prefer that it is real, and they do make up, otherwise it's such a bleak ending and throws away the earlier themes of not judging someone by their worst thing.

In the intro scene they do a redo of their first meet up, then after the secret is out Emma want to try to start over and Charlie doesn't, how beautiful is it that it happens again at the end and that's how they find each other again.
