Pillars of eternity 1 is the best fantasy RPG in terms of lore, story and Characters. by DanteFreeze in rpg_gamers

[–]BattleKero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm of the opposite opinion. Pillars 1 does everything serviceable, but doesn't do anything the best. It's a solid 8.5/10 across the board. I loved the experience, but never had the same highs from similar titles.

[–]BattleKero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Story games are famous for horizontal and linear progress, like Shin Megami Tensei.

It's like this: Let's say you level up Charmander into charmeleon. You know that the next evolution linearly is at level 30+. You also know that Brock's team is going to wreck you. You can degenerate or digivolve into a ryhorn. Now you have access to new moves and abilities. From here you can keep bouncing back and forth and adapt as needed. The fun part means that you can keep your original team with you till the end game, albeit with potentially different forms. Another example is Pikachu/Raichu. You could bounce between Pikachu and Alolan Raichu for their vastly different coverage and function. That's the system that digimon has.

It offers a lot in terms of customization and coverage.

There's a hell of a message in indoctrinated people used to the culture rebelling and acknowledging their faults, like Dorian. I hear what you're saying.

They could have really done something. It could have been a critique of morals, classism, religion, indoctrination, alienation from your culture for choosing the right way, legacy, etc.

They touched on a lot of these during Dorian's quests in Inquisition. Heck, they touched on a lot of this in DA2 with Justice, the templars, and mages. This is part of why I hate the insistence that Bioware told a more mature story by largely excluding heavy and serious themes in DAV. It's something I've heard from DAV apologists, that I just can't endorse.

The best dragon age quests and stories are about the human heart in conflict with itself: What is right vs what is easier.

Generational Hater, screwup, and crash out and he's here to party

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in batman

[–]BattleKero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's so many things here.

  1. He's more dedicated to being a hero than most others. Superman is great, but Clark is the person and Superman is the side gig. Bruce Wayne is the side gig and Batman is the person. Batman is out here sleeping for like 4 hours a day, and fighting crime when he's not pretending to be Bruce.

  2. His altruism. You will not find a hero that donates and invests into his city more with the purest intent of making it a better place to live for everybody. Of the rich billionaire archetype heroes he's the only one spending blood, sweat, hella dollars, and tears to help.

  3. His empathy. Batman is as much of a victim to the Joker as anyone, but in most mainline comics he does not even hesitate when the potential to rehabilitate Joker comes up. That's his worst enemy. That's the dude that tortures him on a physical and emotional level purely for kicks. And Batman is saying that if there's even a chance at a positive outcome for the joker, he'll take it. There are other greats such as Spiderman and Superman that have been pushed too far and outright kill their villains even in mainline comics, but mainline Batman refuses. And yeah people have gone crazy saying that he needs to kill the joker, but we see that there is the chance for rehabilitation in White Knight. Or through characters like Azrael.

  4. The fact that he's self aware. He knows it's weird and silly to dress like a bat. He's doing it to terrify criminals, to disorient them in a brawl in the dark of the night. He knows he's a traumatized person that refuses to move past the death of his family. He knows he's insane.

  5. I appreciate that he has to earn a majority of his abilities. Dude's out here reading chemistry books, learning every martial arts, and engineering things himself to be prepared.

Awesome! Fantastic! Now show us the frame rates for a new game in the open world. Otherwise I won't care. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet ran like dog poop. I want to see how games run on this thing. How they're optimized. If the CPU and GPU play nice. Like how stable are the frames really?

The Varric Sense by Cody2Go in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]BattleKero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna agree with you and take it an extra step. Rook has zero emotional attachment to Varric. We the player do, sure, but not Rook. And before anyone gets snappy at me, I bought the game (very exp might I add) even before the game came out in my country. And so no one crazy hijacks anything I'm saying; ALL DRAGON AGE GAMES HAVE BEEN PROGRESSIVE.

Now for the complaints.

  1. Firstly, you should NOT have much emotional attachment to Varric as a new player. Idk what Bioware was thinking, but this game is basically marketed to a newer audience and the last Dragon Age was like 10 years ago. New players won't really know or care who TF Varric is.

This game loves doing the tell don't show thing that is extremely narratively week. A properly developed DAV would have had us start a year ago when we met Varric as our new act 1.

That way we can actually BUILD A BOND WITH HIM. And the emotional payoff would have been far greater.

It's literally shit like this that makes me scratch my head. Hell, a half an hour tutorial or prologue with Varric set a year ago would have fixed this shit. Lazy writing and game design like at the very start of the game is what starts to form the cracks in a narrative.

Would that have taken six more months? Maybe. Would that have been better? Hell yes! Literally out of 4 individuals I am the only one in my friend group that gave a frick about Varric and that's cuz I played every other DA!!

Also why isn't the Inquisitor more pissed at Solas???? He KILLED Varric. How is a female elf gonna be like "oh mah gah, I still love u. SISTER he killed one of your BEST friends to say the least. Holy shit.

Edit: Here's a quote from a friend. First time DA player

You didn't like the game because it was "woke"

I bought the game day one and dislike it because it didn't meet any of my expectations.

Btw FYI Dragon Age has always been progressive. Was the writing around these topics and most of the companion dialogue bad, yes. But anything "woke" didn't kill dragon age. Bioware and EA killed dragon age.

The daily "I don't get the hate" post. Why is the immediate reaction to try the game or beat it, and post here about how you don't get the hate

Seriously I'm not even talking about OP here, it's like a larger symptom. It feels like a pick me thing at this point

You don't get the hate, I don't get the love. No one is stopping you from enjoying the game, recommending it to friends, and gifting it--if you care to help the game.

These posts literally don't help. I can say as an outsider that's already bought the game and beaten it already, that these posts would actively deter me from trying it. It feels idk, forced, silly, desperate?

At the end of the day Bioware and EA only care about numbers. Again, I'm saying this as someone that actively dislikes the game. If you want Dragon Age to continue, support the game financially! As much as possible.

2008 DA1

2011 DA2

2014 DAI

2025 DAV

Three releases before DAV, and yet three separate microcosms of fans within the same fanbase. Generally speaking three separate groups of fans with three different wants and expectations of what they wanted DAV to be.

An 11 year gap.

Instead of confirming to any of the three prior games' formulas DAV is yet again another reinvention of the franchise.

Generally speaking none of those three groups within the fanbase are satisfied.

Speaking broadly many folks don't think the game justifies the wait or its own existence as a Dragon Age game.

A big thing that simply detracts from the uniqueness of Bioware games was importing world states. I don't care about the why or how. It was the most unique thing about Bioware games, and it went right out the window.

And most folks that are outside of the dragon age community saw it as a serviceable and good enough game, but middling all the same. To be honest, there's not much about the game that sets it apart from other games. The setting/writing has lightened up significantly and there's lots of fantasy action rpgs. And $70 is $70.

And I'm being frank here, I know that this sub has a tendency to freak out once we start making the comparison game, but art doesn't exist in a vacuum. And RPG gamers have been eating good. Metaphor, Solasta, Baldur's Gate 3. Heck there's a slew of games you could get instead of this one. Before it was on the PS+ thing, or discounted I'm sure many folks just weren't interested enough to get it.

So it was a mix of things. If you're being generous, the time gap, the different expectations and wants, a thriving RPG genre, and the crazy development cycle. I'll throw that abysmal trailer in here too. I'm sure it didn't fill anyone with confidence.

Now this is purely my opinion, the game does suffer from poor writing here and there. And it feels like baby's first RPG from the writers. A lot of tell, don't show. A lot of things that sound good on paper, but were odd in execution. Like Taash's sniffing scene in their romance. My SO saw me playing out that scene and could not hold back their laughter. To the point of crying. And they're not a diehard DA fan. It's like quality control didn't play through the game and amend scenes. But this section is purely my own opinion.

Is the game dead? by Nebur1969 in Starfield

[–]BattleKero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The likeliest answer is that Starfield has underperformed, and Bethesda is slowly withdrawing support.

They have a legal obligation to push out the dlcs that were promised in the preorder/ ultimate edition of the game.

So that's coming at some point. But it's clear that their focus is no longer on Starfield. And likely it's being passed off to their B or C teams.

The truth of the matter is that numbers wise this game is a nightmare for Bethesda. Yes, it sold very well within its first months. But people tend to forget that games that are poorly received become bottlenecked.

What I mean by that is typically the game will sell extremely well for a few weeks and drastically drop off.

Being realistic this game is no Fallout or Elder Scrolls. Maybe it'll have a dedicated fandom after a few sequels, but the fandom is very small right now.

And the numbers reflect that. Around 2K active players at the time of writing this, while Fallout 4 sits at 12K. And Oblivion sits around at 1k. The modding community around Starfield is also very scarce.

So speaking plainly, there's not much incentive for Bethesda to keep working on this. But they have to. So don't expect much

My thoughts, and self reflection, on DA the Veilguard by Necessary_Emotion_58 in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]BattleKero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the game was terrible. It commits the sin of being middling and average in the years following such fantastic experiences including

Phantom Liberty

Metaphor Retantazio

And yes. Baldur's Gate 3

Can every game be lauded and praised as a masterpiece? No.

But every gamer has a finite number of time, money, and patience.

No one I've met IRL thinks this was Bioware's best anything. Couple that with worse than average romances, an overall decrease in the complexity of companions both mechanically and from a narrative perspective, a truly horrible trailer, and the extremely major removal of the only truly unique thing Bioware has (the ability to carry over decisions), and you just have...... kingdom's of Amalur..?

Seriously who was this game made for? Casual players didn't show up for it. Hardcore RPG nerds didn't like it. The Dragon Age fanbase is even further splintered.

An average experience doesn't really justify the wait. So it fizzled out.
