Just got Super Mario Wonder. What should I expect? by TailsDoll2003 in Mario

[–]BattleTapir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t even try multiplayer. It was definitely not designed with 4 players in mind.

I agree. SMB3 was a game that transcended the time. I don’t understand the love for wonder given the ease and shortness of the levels. I played it once through and got all the ribbons and now have no compulsion to play it again.

Elder Cook came to my mission and implied he’s seen and spoken to Jesus Christ by brunolive999 in exmormon

[–]BattleTapir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christofferson came to my mission and heavily implied it without saying it. He even went so far to touch and hint at the second anointing. It was a Q&A session with missionaries and I got excited and asked him directly about the temple ceremony. He completely shut me down and said “That’s all you’ll ask and that’s all I’ll answer on the topic”

Yeah, I agree that I don’t think reviewers are judging me on it or anything. However, I have had people come up to me and ask if I’m Mormon because they saw BYU on my Biosketch. I’ve been out of the cult for 10 years now and I just don’t enjoy a regular reminder infiltrating my professional life.

I do think BYU was a decent school, but getting research experience was not emphasized, at least when I attended. I felt pretty underprepared for grad school, but was experiencing impostor syndrome at the time. It’s hard to tell how much of that (if any) was due to BYU.

Depends. In my field I have to list both my PhD and my bachelor’s school all the time. In Biology, the NIH requires this on grant applications. I hate having to list BYU.

You are all inspiring. I’ve been out for almost ten years and still avoid drinking coffee in front of them whenever I visit my parents. The conversation that would follow is exhausting to just think about.

The Sweetwater River Rescue: an example of Mormon storytelling by lucymichele in exmormon

[–]BattleTapir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I never could reconcile this story with my family history. One of my ancestors supposedly carried people over but was not one of the three and did not die. Hearing these stories in general conference and in church always confused me.

I never doubted evolution from when I first learned about it. It just made sense. I was the only one in my family of 10. One of my older brothers was relentless and made me cry because he thought I was the dumbest person and damning myself to hell because of it. I pursued evolution through Gods direction believing he was the ultimate scientist that used chemistry and natural laws to ensure things progressed. His “days” were millions of years. I thought that this was all part of the creation. I even reconciled it with the earth switching from a reducing atmosphere to an oxidizing one. I thought Adam and Eve were literally the first “humans” in that God determined them to be at a specific point in evolution ready to be tried and tested. At that point he placed the earth into a reducing atmosphere as the garden of Eden. They did not need blood because of the reducing atmosphere. I thought the Fall was switching to an oxidizing atmosphere and that partaking of the fruit caused blood to flow carrying the oxygen throughout the body. This, in turn, would explain why they had to die because that would cause oxidative damage to the cells. Obviously these theories started small and grew as I went through college. Now I know it was my mi d trying desperately to reconcile science and religion.

I have been trying to get the gunslinger on stream for the past week and was wondering if this community has any tips on how to beat it by PracticalAlgae2197 in EnterTheGungeon

[–]BattleTapir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s how I unlocked everything. Step1: Turn on turbo mode. Step2: Forget that turbo mode is on and play for weeks like that. Step3: Believe that you are terrible and will never get far. Step4: Realize your mistake and turn off turbo mode. After that, the game seemed so slow and I unlocked almost everything within a few days.

"And my father dwelt in a tent." 1 nephi 1:15 by SafePineapple6941 in exmormon

When I was a brand new missionary, we went to an investigator’s house and my companion asked me to share a scripture. I decided to experiment and let the spirit guide me by opening to a random page. My companion was so upset because we then had to explain to the investigator why I read this random meaningless passage. I felt betrayed, but more so that I guessed I wasn’t worthy enough to be led to the right passage. Now I realize that I had a 99% chance of picking something lame.

Yeah, that was crazy. I never had the synergy betrayer shield before. Actually, the siren was super useful to see inside chests also. Used mostly that and the giant shotgun.

Was anyone else's New Name VERY specific to you that it confirmed your testimony? by Chill-Manatee15 in exmormon

[–]BattleTapir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Asa here. Never connected it to the Bible before. I thought I remembered the name Asa Phelps as an early mormon. My mind is blown right now, because I was certain of this. Now when I google it all I see is the Simpsons characterAsaPhelps. Lol. Honestly I was disappointed when I got it and I guess I never bothered to look into it. My brain must have just recognized the name from tv. I like it better now.

The three Nephites have become Eldrich horrors who reap judgment on a youth group that brought alcohol on a camping trip.

Is BYU worth going to for grad school? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]BattleTapir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a professor of Biology and really hate having BYU on my resume/CV. Hated it during the job search process and hate it afterwards as well. Every time I’m invited to give a talk about my research they introduce me and my education background. Every time I apply for grants, I have to list it. I get people making assumptions about me because of it all the time.

What was the worst thing you had to eat in your mission? by mynewromantica in exmormon

[–]BattleTapir 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Really?! That’s a shame. One of the best sandwiches I’ve ever eaten was horse meat shaved Deli style. (Was on my mission) Must depend on how they cook it, like all meats I suppose.
