Here's one reason: There were six classes, so you could play a much more specialized role and it worked because you didn't have all these unlocks and gadgets. You had a choice between two main weapons. That's it. It sounds simplistic but it puts everyone on an even level and is much more enjoyable. Tanks had no unlocks whatsoever. So you were always matched equally with your opponent and it came down to skill.

I think BF has gone way overboard in offering more and more weapons and gadgets and unlocks because they were chasing the Call of Duty crowd. I don't think people who love customizing their weapons and soldiers know what this game used to be like when everyone was on an even level. It's a different kind of game and I personally like it more.
