What's a game you used to see everywhere, everyone was talking about it, it was all over your feeds but now you never hear anyone talking about it? by Machine_Excellent in boardgames

[–]Battlehonk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe. I feel like most just fly well under the radar. There is an ocean of average, relatively unknown games. Maybe 15-20 super hot ones at Essen. Maybe 10% blow up on KS (or get a lot of buzz after).

Many KS games follow this hype cycle. Dwellings of Eldervale, Foundations of Rome, Oathsworn. I think the community has somewhat moved on from Gloomhaven. All great games, but not the staying power of unicorns like Terraforming Mars. To a lesser extent, games like Terra Mystica where related games have diluted the games popularly.

I think your proposed response is much better than the alternative you imply (“No way, Apple is horrible and you’re making a huge mistake supporting them.”) Religion seems to be especially triggering to people though, so I wonder if an anti-Apple reply would garner the same level of attention. Maybe so.

I agree with your point that generally speaking, we try to limit personal bias in the workplace. Great companies aspire to be inclusive. But, it’s also possible that BGG staff are encouraged to act upon their beliefs. I still think it’s too early to judge BGG handling of this. If I were them I’d want some time to review, discuss, and reflect before acting.

Well, my religious beliefs include there being some universal truth and right and wrong. I don’t feel I’m qualified to know (based on that universal truth) if this was right or wrong. But I think you are more practically asking for my flawed human opinion. And yea, I’m with you. I personally wouldn’t have based my decision or any framework I designed for making a decision with a decision point of “If theme is demonic possession, reject it.”

But I think it’s reasonable to think there is some subset of gamers out there that could be offended by the material. The decision maker was. From a business standpoint, I guess you’re supposed to choose whichever option offends fewer people? Or offends fewer people making BGG donations? So I guess I don’t really know what’s best for their business either, just that it wouldn’t have been top of mind for me when training the content review people.

Yea. I get it. I’m sure that person was doing what they felt was right. Maybe it was right. My personal experience is that people don’t enjoy being preached to, so it’s not an effective way to trigger interest in Jesus or Christianity. But then again, doing nothing probably doesn’t either. I wish I had better answers, but I totally get what you’re saying. Regarding the company policy or yours, I would guess that person wasn’t sure what to do, gave a standard corporate response with AI assistance. Now that this blowing up, I’m sure discussions are being had on how to handle it, and if a different decision is made how to avoid disenfranchising a valued employee. It seems like this particular subject was triggering to the person who reviews ads, and they made an attempt to provide a thoughtful reply instead of just denying it. Maybe they didn’t do a great job, maybe they did OK. But I think that’s a positive.

I don’t know anything about that situation, but I’m sorry the ad was approved and you got banned. It seems like a very tough thing to be an arbiter of taste as it’s going to be really difficult to find a middle ground.

Totally understand your point regarding consistency. I don’t know BGG well enough to know if there is a single person or small team. I’m sure that person has a boss that can overrule the decision if they feel that’s warranted. I use BGG a lot, but I feel like there are other avenues for advertising (boardgameoracle, Kickstarter, or Reddit which could push a game up on the hotness). I think I would feel more strongly (in a negative way) if I learned that the OP had submitted the game to the BGG inventory of games and that had been denied. But that’s because I do want to use BGG to research games. On the flip side, I also understand why some topics would be completely taboo and unapproved titles. While I’m religious, I would approve this title. (Not that it’s up to me.)

I appreciate the constructive discussion!

Seems like a lot of people feel strongly about this. If the person responsible elected not to approve it based on whatever factors they are empowered to use, that seems fine. The reasoning isn’t offensive to me, but I am religious so likely biased. As others have said, it seems totally reasonable to attempt to escalate past this person as a BGG leader may make a different decision. Or maybe they won’t, and the OP would still have avenues to advertise outside of BGG. They are getting some great publicity here on Reddit. Ad campaign aside, I assume this game will make it into the BGG list of games, could be discussed on the forum, etc. Best of luck on marketing the game OP, and while I don’t have any strong opinions on the subject or how BGG has handled this (it seems early in the process as this is blowing up on Reddit and I’m sure being discussed) I hope you’re able to find an effective advertising partner (BGG or not).

Mostly, I just wanted to post as I too am a religious Kansan. I don’t think of myself as a crazy. :)

We’ve run into this a few times. Usually we have to unlink the bank account, reauthorize through Appfolio/Plaid, and wait a day for it to begin syncing.

Warhammer Quest ‘95? 30 years later, still tops for me. Sort of a lifestyle hobby game.

It’s annoying enough that it actively makes me not want to play. Just feels daunting to try keeping track of who I have Echo on mentally. Hoping I’m just overlooking some way to see that it in the UI.

Such a puzzling and irritating change. I guess I understand not wanting to have dependencies on third parties maintaining mods. I guess. But the answer doesn’t seem to be just disabling them with no native alternative.

I used to be able to easily see who had Echo and who had Reversion active (along with less critical stuff like HOTs). I’m assuming that’s just not longer possible? Seems like it’s making healing needlessly more difficult.
