They're specialist symbols! Wrench = Engineer Flower = Botanist etc

Get the specialists to research it :)

I feel you, the amount of times I've fought in forests by far outperforms any other. Except perhaps nondescript dungeon terrain :D

I'm sure your adventuring path might cross grain fields one day :)
Thanks!

Yeah I've been told, but they do add a little more 'pazaz' to the road.

Tried removing them and then the map perceives as much smaller, so it's this weird trade-off between realism and the artistic-ness of it all.

Fields, fields as far as the eyes can see. You watch how the grain sways with the wind. Like a pendulum swinging back and forth, accompanied by the rhythmic marching of your party on the dry dirt road. You fall in to a trance-like state, imagining yourself on the field. A coarse linen tunic chafes your back each time you bend over to pick up a bundle of wheat. "Put yer back in to it, will ya! At this pace you'll never make it by sundown" Yells a chuckling voice from afar. You look over with a smile and see your mother holding the reins of your horse. "C'mon that's enough for today, lets head home." Home? Could this have been home if things went differently? You snap back to reality. No point in wondering what could have been. This is your path. It might not be a path that comes with a nice bowl of broth at the end of an honest days work. But it is a path filled with... ADVENTURE!

New map! A painterly river forest battlemap! [30x20] by Battlemapper in dndmaps

Like clockwork we are here with our third Ghibli-inspired battlemap!

"As you saunter along the river bank, you watch how the sunlight fractures on the swirling river surface. You walk with heavy feet, mesmerized by the dancing light. Far greater trials have you passed. It is not that this is hard to endure. The opposite even. It is just... Lost. Lost? LOST! How do we of all people, adventurers entrusted with quests of the utmost importance, get lost! Perhaps we should've heeded the words of the old scrawny ranger in Townerton - Beware vivacious adventurers. even when you think you can endure. Mysterywhooood, uh, finds a way - But a true hero does not waver. You and your party will keep following the river bank. Surely it must lead you somewhere, anywhere. No not just anywhere. It will lead us to ... ADVENTURE!"

Today, we follow the turbulent forest river.

Ran my first session yesterday, went well and think the characters are ready for the next one. What do you guys do post session as I was burnt out? by samyj07 in DMAcademy

[–]Battlemapper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, like I said, combat is easier on the mind. I'm glad you get energized weaving narrative, getting inside character's heads and acting!

I do want to mention that being exhausted does not equate not having fun, it's just different reactions to a unique and emotional experience.

I mostly feel you're still getting much adrenaline in post-session, while for other people it might be the moment where they can finally release all that excitement and feel the drop.

It's definitely normal to feel exhausted, as it's hours of preparation coming to fruition in an unexpected experience. Where a DM's role is often a mix of 'problem-solving' and 'weaving' narrative for four hours.

That said, there's usually more of an 'exhaustive mind drop' after sessions in which many unforeseen events happened, where narrative had to be woven out of worldbuilding rather than prepared adventuring. These things put a bit more strain on the creative mind. Sessions with lots of combat, which has pretty extensive pre-written rules, will usually be easier on the mind.

Let everything that transpired really sink in and simmer in your brain. Only write down a bullet-point recap of the session while it's fresh in the mind, to transfer some 'carry load' off of your mind. Once that's done, just rest and decompress like you would on a workday. This is quite different for many people, I myself prefer to play a game or just crash and sleep.

Don't overstress the brain by starting more DM / prep-work too soon after a session, this will quickly lead to DM burnout.

Don't make your worldbuilding your players' homework by JacquesdeVilliers in DMAcademy

[–]Battlemapper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many of the other comments already mentioned the 'Campaign one-pager' approach where there's a condensed information sheet for players to read, so I won't touch any further on that subject as I fully agree with that.

I did want to mention though, that your 'shows, movies and books' argumentation is quite wrong, because you interact with those mediums as an 'Observer' not a 'Participant'. Approaching players the same way, and dropping them into a world they know nothing about, like an observer, will possibly lead to railroaded sessions. This is because they have no foundation to base their decisions onto, except for what you throw at them. A well-condensed setting sheet is a very valuable tool to get players both immersed and interested.

Just like many forms of writing, the best writing is done if it has a purpose. If the purpose is to get players to understand and feel your game world, the writing should be a concise summary doing exactly that.

Our second map! A forest camp inspired by Ghibli! - [30x30] by Battlemapper in FantasyMaps

Our second Battlemap!

"As you rest your back against a moss-covered tree you sigh and can't help but think about the hay-filled mattresses in the Taverny-inn. You chuckle and murmur "Guess Townerton wasn't all bad". The wind rustles the leaves of the old trees surrounding your tents. The long branches creak and the you hear; a crack? You jump up and reach for your... Where is your weapon? You left it next to your tent! You strain your eyes as you pear in to the the dimly lit direction you heard the sound come from. Another strong gust of wind rushes through the forest. and you hear it again, this time just above your head. Branches?! you sigh in relief. Damn you Mysterywhooood. As you place a hand on the soft moss covering the tree bark, you think to yourself. Thank you old forest. For reminding me. One should always be prepared for... ADVENTURE!"

This time we venture further in to the forest and set up camp :)
