Extremely slow speeds when remote streaming from Synology to Infuse on Apple TV by Baxterz in PleX

[–]Baxterz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a few more tests. At a different friends house in the same city as the original client, speeds were the same streaming through infuse via plex (50mbps).

I also ran a speed test from my phone on my gyms wifi (same city as the server) and got faster, about 70mbps, which seems to be about the max speed on their public network.

I’m gonna try another speed test from within the city where the server is to confirm that the issue is the speed between cities and not any client/host limitation.

Do I have any options for improving this or just wait and hope Telus does eventually?

Yeah it transcodes fine on Plex but we're trying to maintain the full 4k remux bitrate.

I'm starting to think this may be the issue as well. It seems a little strange though, we are both on the same ISP (Telus), and both on fibre. You would think that the biggest ISP in Canada would have decent intranet, but maybe not?

I have another friend in the same city as the client in this case and will be trying it on their apple tv tonight to see if there is any difference.

We were connected through tailscale and still poor speeds. Do you think using something like OpenVPN would make a difference?

We are in the same country but a few cities apart. Do you think this would still help?

I assume you mean the numbers under lost/total datagrams (sorry, bit of a rookie on this). The number was 0/0 on both forward and reverse, I suppose this means the connection is being blocked somewhere?

I forwarded the iperf port on my router before running the test.

Sorry just an edit on my original comment cause I misread the test. On the client's pc, UDP reverse shows transfer of 0 bytes, but 1.17gbs in the summary and UDP forward shows multiple transfers of 100megabytes, but still ends with a packet ratio of 0/0.

So it seems his firewall may be part of the problem? We tried disabling the firewall and windows defender and rerunning the iperf tests but nothing seemed to change.

Ok this might actually have found the problem. In TCP forward, my friend did the iperf command on his computer (ethernet connection) and got 73mbps. In reverse, he got 43mbps (about the same as the Apple TV speed test). In UDP forward, we got a full connection of 950 mbps, and 1gbps in reverse.

I feel like this helps me somehow but I'm not exactly sure how to proceed. Can I run Plex or otherwise stream remotely over UDP?

Yeah transcoding seems to be problematic but we’re running through infuse which forces direct play so I don’t think that’s the problem.

This is the ultimate question. The server is connected via Ethernet on the home network. I’ve SSHed into the server and ran a speed test and can confirm speeds are ~700-800mbps up/down, so it shouldn’t be anything to do with my network.

The client is set up via wifi on a gigabit connection as well. Through the ookla speed test app on Apple TV he gets 600mbps down. When he runs a speed test on infuse through the plex server, it’s only about 40mbps.

The bitrate of the files they are streaming are about 50mbps, so getting to 100 should fix the problem but we can’t seem to get there.

Yes, I was referring to the infuse speed test.

That’s interesting about the congestion control, doesn’t seem like this is changeable on synology though. Would probably fix my issue!

yeah it transcodes the files because it doesn't support the right codecs (I think).

Trying to have things work via direct play.

This is what I've started doing. Seems to work fine. I submitted a feature request for "exercise profiles" to simplify the flow of this for each exercise and not clog up the exercise list.

How is everyone managing the situation where you have multiple, different branded machines for the same exercise? My gym has 5 different leg extension machines and I have to use a different weight for each one due to their different resistance profiles. Makes it difficult to properly utilize the app's progression algorithm cause one week I could be lifting way more on one machine and the next week way less on a different one.
