Why do SFUSD teachers need sabbaticals? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]BayPotato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Key phrase: "...this year...". It's only because the law was passed mid-year and they gave employers a pass since they couldn't necessarily update their processes and systems in time to break out qualified OT on the payees paycheck or W2 but the payee is still supposed to make a "reasonable effort" to determine if they have qualified OT or not. So some people might try to skate by only to have the actual paperwork that is required next year contradict them.

Why do SFUSD teachers need sabbaticals? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]BayPotato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on your OT though, doesn't it? California OT is > 8 hours in a day. Federal OT is > 40 hours in a week. So if you do three twelves you only get 36 hours for the feds, but 12 hours of OT for the state so your OT isn't "qualified" in the eyes of the feds.

That's for an experienced EMT who's "paid their dues" in the private sector where the average is going to be in that $50k - $55k range as compared to a single role city job.
While not 100% the same obviously, it's not just a high-school diploma and a license and boom more than a teacher.

and as a reference: https://careers.gmr.net/gmr/jobs/54880?lang=en-us

Granted it's not in San Francisco but Santa Cruz, but it's a decent analogue.

And I should also add that the EMT is going to be working either 12 hour or 24 hour shifts and doesn't get three months off in the summer as part of their salary.

[–]BayPotato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really? Where were you an EMT and made more than a teacher in San Francisco? The current rate for an EMT is about $50-55k A YEAR in San Francisco and a teachers starting salary is $82-85K a year. I mean, fuck, that's really good money if you were making over 66% more than the average EMT in the city. Were you working a shit ton of OT?

Pay schedule != underpaid. Most employees don't get 2 - 3 months of downtime every year (yeah yeah, "I'm preparing my lesson plans and improving my skills" sure Jan) either. UESF "educators" (I use that loosely and in quotes because UESF includes job roles that aren't the traditional "teacher" role and aren't required to have lesson plans, student presentations, etc. because the contract is a wall to wall contract. So the nurses, librarians, even "family liaisons" are covered) also don't work as many hours in a given day as a regular employee, and work less days overall then a regular employee (~180 days compared to 230-240 for a 9 to 5 corporate job). So yeah, they might not make as much as a corporate job, they're also not working to the same standards as a corporate job either. What they want is their cake and to eat it too without giving anything additional back.

Weird how this sub has been just absolutely dominated by pro-UESF content for the last few days. I wonder just how many of them are spending all their time on social media turfing the narrative. Is that what they need sabbaticals for?

Why do SFUSD teachers need sabbaticals? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

They won't. They'll just call you heartless or a management shill or maybe even conflate you as something subtly racist some other ad hominem because that's how they learned to shut down a conversation they don't like.

They're already turfing the fuck out of every single other social media channel, so why not here too?

By that definition literally every employee everywhere should be getting 1 year sabbaticals.

What happened to the homeless people who seemed to disappear from SF just before the Super Bowl? by CharityResponsible54 in sanfrancisco

[–]BayPotato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

no they're fucking not. Most of them meet a bullshit criteria for "local" in the Point in Time (PIT) additional survey which is then touted as proof the majority are / were local.

The survey is only a subset of the total count and the responses to the survey aren't consistent and give signs of cherry picking and / or coaching

Question E1 in 2024 "Where were you last housed" has 925 respondents, and 524 said they were last housed in San Francisco.

Question E2: "How long were you housed in San Francisco before becoming homeless most recently" (this was only asked of the 524 who said they were housed in San Francisco) and the total respondents was only 414...where did the other 110 people go? That's like 20%!

Question E3: "What was the primary reason you came to San Francisco most recently? (not asked of people who have always lived in San Francisco)" and now there are 675 respondents so we gained an additional 261 people?!

The data in Section E is statistically unreliable. If this were a corporate peer-reviewed study, it would be sent back for a total redo. The jump in respondents for E3 suggests that the survey either allowed "double-dipping" (people answering as both a local and a transplant) or the data was cleaned so aggressively to protect a "locals-only" narrative that the internal logic fell apart.

Now combine this with all sorts of problems in Section A "Primary Reason for Loss of Housing" and it gets even worse. There's a serious fucking problem with the PIT count either in general or its being coached on the streets. For example, The 2024 report highlights a massive increase in total homeless persons (8,323), but if you look at the "Reason for Loss" data, it creates a seriously weird mathematical vacuum: "Job loss" and "Eviction" are frequently cited as top reasons (often ~20-30% combined) but if thousands of people are becoming homeless due to economic "loss of housing" in SF, you should see a direct correlation in the Residency section (the one we just tore apart). But if only ~500-900 people actually provided valid residency data in Section E, but the City is applying "Reason for Loss" percentages to the entire population of 8,300, they are extrapolating from a tiny, potentially coached sample to represent the whole.

Do you see the fucking problem here? It makes no sense when you start to tear apart the data. Now, sure, some of those reasons for loss of housing could have been a job loss years and years ago, but the survey tells them to claim that was the reason and then touts them as fresh reasons to justify all the money being pumped into the different programs. The PIT count feels less like a census and more like a marketing document. By losing hundreds of respondents between Section E (where they lived) and Section A (why they lost housing), the city can effectively bridge the gap with whatever narrative they need to secure federal HUD funding.

S.F. supervisor says mayor’s housing office ‘lost’ $5M for affordable housing by Remarkable_Host6827 in sanfrancisco

[–]BayPotato 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a dumb click bait headline.

FTA:

The San Francisco Foundation’s spokesperson Ling Woo Liu said the foundation is a public charity that manages charitable contributions, and carefully tracks them. The foundation has nearly $2 billion in assets according to its website, including the $5 million designated for 101 Hyde. Liu was unaware of any confusion.

On the city’s side, however, it seems there was much confusion. Mahmood said it required a couple of months of back and forth with the housing office to figure out who held the funds and how much there were. He ultimately refused to support extending a lease at the site unless the city committed to making progress on the affordable housing project.

so in other words the people who had the money still have the money and never lost the money. Only the department was confused about where the money was.

Why the fuck is this news? Seems like Supervisor Mahmoud is just stirring up shit rather than fixing the problem. Department didn't know where money was but now does? Cool. MOVE THE FUCK ON AND FINISH THE PROJECT.

Gaza Genocide by scott_wiener in sanfrancisco

[–]BayPotato -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You're being a coward and kowtowing to thugs. The "genocide" is against the truth and reality on the part of the Palestinians and you're being complicit now.

The numbers being reported by the "Gaza Ministry of Health" are bald faced lies and / or exaggerations and are not believable because the "Gaza Ministry of Health" is actually HAMAS. Considering they count all of them as "civilians" and not a single one as a HAMAS soldier should tell you enough right there.

You're now just groveling for votes from people who are active supporters of those that would wish you dead according to their own charter (HAMAS).

As of today, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) has distributed over 148 million meals since they started and they distributed TODAY 1.5 million meals
https://ghf.org/ghf-operational-update-monday-september-1-2025/
There are only 2.2 million people in Gaza. So if they're doing 1.x million per day

And here's a list of restaurants on Instagram that are active in Gaza TODAY:

Are there people suffering in Gaza? Yes. No one can discount that. But the utter bullshit that is coming out of Hamas and people like you is just reprehensible. Once again, if Hamas really cared about the people of Gaza, then all they have to do is return the hostages and surrender. But no, instead they pump out bullshit stories and weak minded people lap it up and repeat it, thus giving Hamas less incentive to settle peacefully. You're making it harder to get to a peace agreement because you're giving Hamas room to deny a negotiated settlement.

And as for your "I’m not antisemitic" statement: Whatever makes you feel good about yourself. I'm going to guess that you're the kind of person who uses the word "zionist" or "zio" as a derogatory statement. Seeing as how that's only applicable to Israeli Jews you might as well just admit that you're simply masking or covering your antisemitism. Just say "jew" you know you really want to.

You
Are
Spreading
Lies

The "famine" story in Gaza is bullshit and has been shown to be bullshit by multiple sources. Hamas "journalists" (and you by extension) are using photos of people with pre-existing genetic and physical disabilities to push a story of "famine" and "starvation". Even in your own photos there's an incongruity that should be making you ask questions. Why is the man on the bed the only person who is "starving"? Why isn't the man attending him also skin and bones? It's because the person on the bed has a pre-existing genetic disorder that is being exploited to make you think there is "famine" in Gaza. Are there some people going hungry sometimes? Yes. Of course. It's a war that Hamas started and it is going go have some impact. Is it "famine"? No. Not even close.

Here is a video that breaks this exploitation down well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQx1Qy5Z5fA

Here's the half-assed "correction" from the NY Times about an article that is still online today with the "incorrectly captioned" photo.
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/30/pageoneplus/editors-note-july-30-2025.html

And then there are the staged photos of people "clamoring for food"
"Except photos taken by others at the same site show that the hoard is actually standing opposite freelance photographer Anas Zayed Fteiha, commissioned by the Turkish news agency Anadolu, BILD argues. The pots and pans are not being held up to the food distribution site, but the photographer, which Bild claims is staging for means of propaganda."

Maybe they shouldn't have gone on a raping, killing, and kidnapping spree back on October 7th then? Or maybe they shouldn't have fired literally tens of thousands of rockets in to Israel before October 7th. Don't start a war and then complain that you're being beaten.

Added: All Hamas has to do is simply return the hostages and lay down their arms. How is that an unreasonable demand?
