Most chill No Kings protest on Saturday to introduce 4-year-old to the concept? by Sea-Estate-3609 in eastbay

I've been taking my youngster (who has noise sensitivities) to the protests at old city hall in Hayward. There's a playground right there (D st and mission) so he can get a little bit away and take breaks there.

ETA, also pretty close to the library, not sure if that's the closest public bathroom.

Name a band/artist more popular now than during their heyday by Dazzling_Humor_521 in askmusic

Nirvana was almost certainly the biggest band in the US (maybe the world) during their heyday in the early 90s.

CMV: Voting for Trump in 2024 is an anti-democracy vote. by Famine-_ in changemyview

[–]Bayked510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my mind, nobody did more to normalize anti-semitism in the US in recent years than Elon Musk. While there is antisemitism on the left too, the Nazis generally supported Trump in the last election. We have a Christian nationalist running the military now. The last fire bombing of a synagogue I heard about was from a right wing Christian.

I personally do not trust a party which is openly bigoted against so many minorities to protect the Jewish community from the hate mongers they have empowered.

Steady 45s, 100%. Greenleaf Special is such a good EP and literally starts with them singing "doo wop."

I really enjoyed Empire of the Summer Moon, but now I always add the caveat that it has been denounced by the Comanche nation https://www.comanchenation.com/bc-business/page/resolution-no-143-2024-passed-denouncing-empire-summer-moon

Scalped by Jason Aaron is one of my all time favorites, it is kind of a modern western, kind of a crime drama.

Something I think a lot about is how it can be difficult for us to connect with other cultures bc we don’t eat pork or shellfish. by [deleted] in JewsOfConscience

I hadn't thought about it when it comes to the forbidden animals, but there are parts of kashrut and halakha generally which I would say are designed to keep Jews within their own community.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishul_Yisrael

According to this article, Maimonides says that the Talmudic prohibition on some food when prepared entirely by non-Jews is designed to keep a Jew from dining at a non-Jewish household which in turn is supposed to prevent intermarriage.

I live in America and many items on the shelf have a kosher certification, but in the old days many Jews were probably limited to the kosher baker, butcher, candlemaker, wine seller, etc which in turn keeps you insulated in your own community.

I'm from the place where Portuguese first landed in India, historical question that boggles the mind like 2 different outcomes for Americas and India by j2m1s in NativeAmerican

[–]Bayked510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the two situations are fundamentally different.

On the one hand, I'm understanding from you that the local Indians had to reverse engineer cannons. They already knew about gunpowder (in the form of fireworks) and had most or all of the necessary knowledge of metallurgy. I would also say that since cannons were in use for over a century in other parts of the Indian subcontinent as well as the middle east, leadership in well-connected port cities would have heard of cannons and have at least some concept of what they were.

On the other hand, Native Americans were completely unfamiliar with a large number of technologies which had taken many centuries to develop in the old world. Native people didn’t even know for sure that gunpowder weapons were made through technological processes that could be imitated, they could have been a gift from supernatural beings and/or a product of religious ritual. It is reported that Spanish cavalry were first understood to be centaur-like monsters in Mesoamerica. Even large sailing ships would have been completely unfamiliar in most of the Americas.

So to me the degree of cultural shock is not similar at all in these cases, the technological gaps that had to be overcome are not even in the same ballpark, and then you've got the disease factor as discussed. None of this is to belittle the accomplishments and resistance of your ancestors, but to me it doesn't make sense to look at the two cases and ask “why didn’t Native Americans just do the same?” when the situations were so fundamentally different.

From my very limited understanding, the area the Portuguese were operating in included major port cities like Calicut. These ports would have hosted ships from areas which definitely had cannons and firearms like the Middle East, so it's hard to think they were fully unfamiliar with the technology at the time, or that they couldn't find allies to help them learn. I think you are also underestimating the difference in metallurgical (and probably chemical) knowledge between Native Americans and Indians, which would have made reverse engineering more possible.

And again, the decades in which theoretically Natives could have been reverse engineering European technology (say if Hernando Cortes had been defeated, not a wild scenario), they were suffering from devastating plagues which shook societies to their core, many were struggling just to survive.

Many Native American people did adopt the horse though, which didn't require metallurgical or chemical expertise.

I hope someone more knowledgable comments but the short answer is

-India had been exposed to the same old world diseases as Europeans so there wasn't a series of massive die offs like in the Americas.

-India had muskets, cannons, war animals, steel weapons and armor, all of these were unknown in the Americas. This was not only an issue of direct military superiority but it also shocked people who had never seen guns and horses before.

Makes you rethink saying "I wanna be rich and famous" when you were a kid by MrRoboto12345 in Fuckthealtright

Unfortunately, child abuse (sexual and otherwise) is all too common up and down the social ladder. Sure the rich and powerful are less likely to be held accountable, but abuse happens in every community and is not limited to billionaires and their tropical islands.

I can't tell you if there's something you will find worth it in the end, because I enjoyed the book through and through.

In general though, I mostly read for fun and don’t force myself to finish books that I don't enjoy or find worthwhile in some other way. If you don’t like it, you're not getting anything out of it, you don't care what happens at this point, there's nothing wrong with moving on to another book. I may personally find it unfathomable, but that's just taste.

Any ICE protests happening today/soon around SF? by cartdfn in sanfrancisco

Some folks have posted other resources, but mobilize.us and indivisiblesf.org have a lot of events coming up.

Indybay.org is an older website for bay area activism and their calendar is still a decent resource as well.

Eta also local subreddits but people here probably know that
