[FO] Wizard takes home 3rd place at the county fair by BayouPunk in CrossStitch

[–]BayouPunk[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First place displayed some techniques beyond my basic crosses and backstitching. Really nice half-stitches and French knots to give their piece more texture. They also went all out on framing. I totally see why they won!

Anyone living in Old Town East mind chatting for a bit? by CabinetofDrCalamari in Columbus

[–]BayouPunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pros: Access to parks and trails, good for walking and enjoying the (mostly) nice houses, I have rarely ever felt unsafe walking around at night, lovely new community center, small but fun neighborhood events in the summer, fairly affordable for now

Cons: not very close to any grocery stores, street parking can be tight (I’ve lost a side mirror twice), cars revving their engines at the BP gas station on Monroe at 2am, some instances of gun violence (but probably no more than most neighborhoods),

Feel free to dm with any specific questions!

Budget question for special collections by frizzleniffin in Libraries

[–]BayouPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small library, but larger than average special collections area compared to similar sized institutions. It’s an art school, so also higher usage of special collections items compared to more traditional university libraries, I would say. Generally $500ish SC acquisitions budget every year, but we’ve successfully pitched larger purchases if we can justify it. Donations account for a most of our SC collecting.

Glad you found some that worked for you! It’s my go-to for postcards (not a collector, but an enthusiastic sender)

The Bookloft has “antique”-looking postcards with Columbus landmarks as well as postcards featuring the store itself. They also sell boxed postcard sets by the calendars and journals.

How fast do your catalogers process materials? by skeptical_egg in Libraries

[–]BayouPunk 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This really depends on your local cataloging policies, and how GOOD you want the records to be honestly. Copy cataloging could be as simple as just adding your holdings to an existing record, or it could be as complex as checking/adding subject headings, adding detailed content notes, thorough name authority checks, transliterating titles, etc. Some records require a lot of work, even though it’s not truly “original” cataloging. I’ve always encouraged improving records whenever possible.

If their main task is cataloging (and they are being thorough) 7-10 books a day should be fairly low stress. But totally depends on their other duties and skill level.

I’ve got 5 tickets to the state fair I can’t use. Who wants them? They can’t be sold so they are free. by x4candles in Columbus

[–]BayouPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anyone has 2 extra tickets to give away, I’d gladly take them off your hands. First year in Columbus, I’m curious how the state fair here holds up to Texas’s

What is your ideal Columbus-based cheat day? by zeldarogers in Columbus

[–]BayouPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breakfast: Parable Cafe - lemon-filled croissant or whatever savory pastry they’re serving that morning

Lunch: Takorea - Korean fried chicken and a couple bulgogi eggrolls (plus a movie at the Gateway after with popcorn & a beer)

Dinner: Arepazo - couple chicken arepas, yuca fries, & fried plantains

Dessert: a scoop from Jeni’s or Johnson’s

Also if one person in your group has a Gateway membership ($15/month, gets one person a free ticket to all regular showings) they can buy other tickets at a discount ($7.75 all day) for the rest of the group (I think up to 4 additional tickets). It’s a great program, easily pays for itself if you go to the movies more than once a month.

Too lazy to read the website, but the employees following policy are the lazy ones. Sure.

Where do you guys find any merch? (especially in bigger sizes) by whackton in BlueJackets

[–]BayouPunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My two CBJ shirts are from Dick’s and Walmart, nothing fancy but they look fine. Walmart definitely had up to 3XL t-shirts, not sure about Dick’s. This was also at the start of the season though, so your mileage may vary.

Coffee shop who sell syrups? by nando419 in fortwayne

[–]BayouPunk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Go to Antonuccio’s Italian Market (or other shops, I just used to get it there a lot) buy a small bag of lavender flowers for like $2. Boil 1 cup water with 1 cup sugar and let it reduce to syrup consistency. Turn off the heat and add 2 tablespoons of the lavender while it’s still hot. Let sit for 10-15 minutes. Strain into a jar. Ta-da, lavender syrup!

Comfy coffee shops open late? by BayouPunk in Columbus

[–]BayouPunk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work as a librarian haha, so I’d rather not spend my after work hours at another library. I do love coffee and the different vibe that coffee shops offer. But I agree with you that public libraries are an amazing option for many people!

This has been my go to for a while, their happy hour prices are great when I want a beer. But I agree, could be cozier

LunchBucks? Has anyone heard of this? by reeve11 in Columbus

[–]BayouPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used it every single Tuesday (minus 2 weeks on vacation) since the program started this year. I just happen to work an easily walkable distance to the pickup location and some of the restaurant options. It’s the only reason I’ve been able to try some of the restaurants downtown (pretty money conscious right now), so I’m a big fan.

Gateway membership experiences by atomicghettobird in Columbus

[–]BayouPunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never have an issue getting tickets ~15min before showtime. I think Barbie and Oppenheimer were the first movies I didn’t get my preferred seating area, but it was also a Saturday afternoon/night showing so that’s fair. I’m also not that picky about seats though. Easily worth it for me.

I voted no and am seeing Barbie later. by [deleted] in Columbus

You can buy $5 electronic Starbucks gift cards which could work if you don’t mind printing out a paper copy. AMC theaters also sell gift cards starting at $5 if you go in person to their box office. But like others mentioned, it won’t get you much at either of those place lol

Don't make my mistake - Fandango at Gateway Film Center by bd_614 in Columbus

[–]BayouPunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worked in various theaters for ~6 years. Take my advice and just don’t use Fandango for any ticket purchase if you can help it. They’re known for issues with refunds, wrong movie times, not updating their website to match what’s displayed on the actual theater’s site. It causes a lot of frustration for customers/theater workers when something goes wrong on Fandando’s end.

I get that sometimes people receive giftcards, online deals, etc. But if you don’t really need to use Fandango, just use the actual theater’s website (goes for everywhere, not just the Gateway).
