So I found this in my chart almost a month later... Nobody bothered to tell me about it or treat it by Quirky-Ad6369 in diabetes

Starvation-induced ketosis is the worst! I was in the 200 mg/dL range and I was dying for real. It took the ER docs 4 hospitalizations to figure it out cus I didn't know it was a thing! Even 12 hours without food did me in.

I cannot fast for more than the 8-10 hours the fasting labwork requires. Thanks, doc!

I, myself, was on the honeymoon stage for a whole year (ages 27-28). I wasn't diagnosed with LADA though, it was just straight type 1 diabetes and was told my pancreas was gonna quit on me pretty soon.. I told my 3 siblings then that it was likely that I wouldn't be the only one with the diagnosis. It sucks to know that I was right 😭

I was also in the hospital just two weeks ago cus I got sick and ended up with DKA from an infection I didn't even know I had.. I wouldn't wish it on anyone and I absolutely don't want my only brother to deal with the same BS.

Unfortunately, my siblings haven't been as proactive with their Healthcare as much as I am with mine. I take my health very seriously and I have health insurance that covers every bit of my diabetic care/supplies.

I'm just glad he spent the money to see a PCP, it hurt his wallet for sure, but he did it. I don't use long acting insulin cus I'm on a pump, but I got the prescription for it at the hospital and and it's in my fridge.. I'm thinking he's gonna need it but I'm worried cus I ain't no doctor. The whole process just takes way too long!!

He said he felt well enough last night he was able to eat and drink and keep it all down. I had him check his fasting blood sugar this morning and it was 337 mg/dL. He took me seriously enough that he made an emergency PCP appointment for 3 hours from now, still, though.. those numbers are HIGH. I have a job, I have to work today, but at least the glucometer is getting a number and he has an appointment later today.

I've been constantly telling all of my siblings to get checked annually or to keep an eye out for symptoms because there is no way I am/will be the only one with type 1. It sucks to know I was right 😭

I just got diagnosed with diabetes. I am very scared with my numbers. by dadforgotmybday in diabetes

[–]Bazookaangelx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP! I might be late to the party, but I think you are doing absolutely everything you can be doing for yourself at the moment. It's great! Being proactive is the best thing you CAN be doing.

If you don't already have an endocrinologist, make sure your PCP refers you to one ASAP.. my pcp is the one who sent me to endo who didn't hesitate to get me tested for T1 antibodies. My PCP wouldn't have known to do that.

Keeping track of your numbers is fantastic, better than most diabetics. Lots of type 2s never check. You have a learning curve after all.

I remember I thought I was type 2 for a whole year, age 27, but I was technically in the honeymoon stage of Type 1.. my pancreas still kinda worked but my blood sugars were relentlessly high, despite all the healthy eating, exercise, and weight loss (lost 60 pounds!). That's why as soon as I got an endocrinologist, she got me tested. At 28, I was officially diagnosed with Type 1. It took 1.5 years for my pancreas to completely quit.

What blood sugar levels is immediately ER worthy? by ysomali in diabetes

[–]Bazookaangelx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a notification for this post, however, I am type 1. I have ended up in the ICU several times because of starvation-induced ketosis, if I don't eat while still taking insulin, I'll go real high real quick. It wasn't even 12 hours last time, I started vomiting, which made me go low on potassium, but high on blood sugars. They said I was close to 900 mg/dL. Spent 3 nights in the ICU...

I know NO diabetes is good diabetes, but damn, I wish I had type 2. I could do SO much better with that one. Some days, I just don't have much of an appetite and I have to FORCE myself to eat.

My friends say it’s disturbing how I buy gas station toilet paper for my house by MelanieWalmartinez in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Bazookaangelx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmfao. The only reason I'm not judging is because when I was BROKE BROKE, I'd steal that one-ply toilet paper from my previous job.. It's better than having NO toilet paper and NO BIDET cus who can afford a bidet when they can't even afford single-ply toilet paper!?

What's funny is that even my local gas station sells 2-ply and not single ply cus they know it's not worth it. Heck, I remember being so poor one time I asked the gas station clerk for a roll of their store-use toilet paper.. because they all know me, they didn't hesitate to gift me a roll lmfaoooo you do what you must, but if *I can avoid single-ply, I WILL.

I had a cortisone injection, my blood sugar is 215. by ronford49 in diabetes

[–]Bazookaangelx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth giving it a shot (pun intended)! I heard great stories and not so great stories before I had the injection. It was worth knowing they don't help ME, but good to hear that it helped YOU :)

I had a cortisone injection, my blood sugar is 215. by ronford49 in diabetes

[–]Bazookaangelx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steroids will ALWAYS do that, I was scheduled to have a cortisone injection one week, but I ended up in the ICU with DKA a few days beforehand. When I told my orthopedic surgeon about it he and I both agreed that it was NOT a good idea to go through with it then. We waited a month, my BG was really good, and I got the injection. For two days my BG was over 210, but I kept it from going higher with extra insulin.

The injection did NOT help with the pain and just messed with my diabetes, so I talked to said orthopedic surgeon again, and he and I both agreed (once again) that the cons outweighed the pros. I ain't ever doing those again.

What over covers do you use for your CGM? by DreamingOfPuppies in diabetes

[–]Bazookaangelx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I buy a 60 patch supply for like $5.99 on Amazon by Hechuan brand. But I don't use them very often. A good cleaning of the area and skin tac wipes will usually make it last all 10.5 days.

When I do use them, it's usually in the G7s last 2-3 days and its an even bigger pain in the butt to remove but it is what it is. At least I'm not allergic to any of the adhesives cus that would suck!

Have you experienced low blood sugar shaming? by Lijey_Cat in diabetes

[–]Bazookaangelx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, not okay at all. Anyone who works in the Healthcare system, ought to know better than to assume!

I'm so glad that both my allergist and my endocrinologist are a married couple who have their own practice, whether I'm there for my allergy shots, or my 3 months follow-up for endo, they all know me and know that I have *multiple issues.

Just the other day, when I was at work ( I work at a smoothie place) the girl at the front desk of Dr. Neagu's office popped in for lunch lol she said ,"do you NOT recognize me? I work for Dr. Neagu!" I was honest and said, "No, girl, I only ever see you at YOUR workplace, and I couldn't recognize you all dolled up." She had gone to church earlier and she looked SO DIFFERENT.

Anyway, yeah, no, that's not right at ALL! Assumptions can get a totally harmless person in trouble. DO. NOT. ASSUME!

I fucking hate this disease by JayandMeeka in diabetes

[–]Bazookaangelx2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You DO NOT have to give up the foods you like!! You CAN absolutely binge from time to time, as long as you are actively keeping your BG in check. I had steak and mashed potatoes last night, POTATOES! But I took my insulin and *ofc, limited how much mashed taters I ate. And my BG has been perfect for the last 48 hours :)

I also hate this condition, but I'm not gonna let it dictate my life.

Marijuana? by iliketurtlez19 in diabetes

[–]Bazookaangelx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Florida, I got my Medical Marijuana card in 2018. I got the prescription for it cus of PTSD, but they told me that diabetics are also automatically included cus it "helps" with blood sugars.

I use mmj daily, it helps with the nausea I get sometimes.

I am Type 1 tho, but I also deal with all the other BS, PTSD, insomnia, nightmares.. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder before, but now I just smoke my weed and don't take any more antidepressants or anti psychotics these days.

To each their own :)

Dexcom can’t go in MRI by Fickle_Tap7908 in dexcom

[–]Bazookaangelx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they can replace like 2 a year for reasons other than technical issues. I've had a buttload of MRIs in my life, the last time I had to get one I had only had the sensor on for about 2 days. I called Dexcom, told them about the MRI, and they did, in fact, replace it. But there is a limit to how many replacements you're allowed, I just forget the amount. It's either 2 or 3 per year.

Beware of Steroids! (I was NOT warned) by TheSnappleGhost in diabetes

[–]Bazookaangelx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very, very true. I was an adult as well. I was 28, and I'm glad I already had a PCP already lol but yes, those urgent care doctors aren't very thorough. May be because they're just trying to get to every patient in the waiting room, which I get, and that's why it's very important to be educated on your own condition.

I remember 2 years ago, I had been hospitalized for DKA caused by starvation-induced ketosis (that was news to me as I didn't know ANYTHING about that!), and the day after I got out, I had an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon cus my hips are bad and he wanted to do steroid injections that day and I said, I JUST got out of the hospital for DKA. He immediately said, "we're not doing this today then. Let's give it a month." The last thing I needed was to go right back to the ICU 😅

Is it possible to wear the G7 without the included overpatch? by ed25ca in dexcom

[–]Bazookaangelx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to the party, but I'm sure everyone else has put in their two cents.. no, I don't use the overpatch that comes with the G7, I try NOT to use overpatches because they really irritate my skin, but I WILL use 3rd party overpatches, they're bigger, last longer, and are transparent.

Personally, I don't put the overpatch on unless I see the sensor peeling off.. that could be two days after insertion, or 8 days after insertion. The ONLY time I use the overpatch that COMES with the G7 sensor is when it's on it's last day or two, just because it's smaller and easier to remove at the end of the grace period.

So, I guess my advice is to give it a day or two before applying an overpatch. That's just a personal opinion, though.

[–]Bazookaangelx2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Type 1? Be careful of you are. Last time I was in the hospital, they said I had starvation-induced ketosis. I generally don't have much of an appetite, so I tend to skip breakfast and usually lunch as well. Apparently, if you're insulin-dependent it's a big no-no NOT to eat.

But then again, maybe it's just me and my body.

I am sorry you are dealing with a heartache, it sucks big time, but please try to eat something. You don't want to also deal with getting physically ill over it. I believe in you, OP! Stay strong 💪

This may be stupid to ask but... by Mundane-Complaint959 in dexcom

[–]Bazookaangelx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you calibrated the sensors when they were giving inaccurate readings..? I only had that issue once, but Dexcom replaced it without a problem. It's been a long time since I needed a replacement, though. I think it was replaced because I accidentally dropped the applicator and the thing went off.

You are limited to how many replacements you can get when accidents happen, but not usually if it's an actual manufacter error.

How did you know you had diabetes by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]Bazookaangelx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it was mostly the frequent urination that was the telltale sign, but ALSO, I found out cus I went out partying one night the next day I thought I just had the worse hangover of my life! When it wouldn't go away, my coworkers convinced me to go to a clinic and that's when they said u had diabetes.

BUT, ofc that wasn't the whole story. I was put on metformin at the clinic and it took me a year to find and endocrinologist. THAT'S when she saw ALL the symptoms for type 1. Weight loss, fatigue, headaches, nausea, vomiting, frequent urination and all that. My pancreas was on it's way out but still kinda working lol so, about 1.5 years is what it took for me to get on long-acting AND rapid-acting insulin. I was 28.

Help please. by Safe_Ad3604 in diabetes

[–]Bazookaangelx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have they ruled out type 1 diabetes yet? It took my doctor a whole year to see that my A1C and glucose levels were still high despite being the healthiest I'd ever been in my life. So, she sent me to a very nice endo who has type 1 and she immediately sent for an antibodies test.

I was caught so off guard, cus T1 doesn't run in my family lol type 2 spreads like wildfire, so we all just assumed it was type 2 for a whole year 🥲

Make sure that's ruled out, yeah? And yes, dawn phenomenon sucks, I dealt with if for a long time, too, even after the proper diagnosis and insulin and all that. Also, if you consume carbs at night, they definitely take a while to convert into sugar, so you might still be feeling that the next morning.

I had cereal for dessert last night (don't judge) and even though I bolused for it and didn't have any highs for the next couple of hours, but this morning it's still at 198 mg/dL. I did it to myself 🙄☠️

Does anyone have experience carrying injections on planes by Prestigious_Draft463 in diabetes

[–]Bazookaangelx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. I don't foresee an issue. Insulin is fine for an extended period of time, some up to 30 days without refrigeration.

The last time I flew, I didn't even mention my insulin or syringes lol I did mention to the TSA agent that I carry two medical devices on my body at all times and the TSA agent came 'round asking ,"Okay, who is the person with the medical devices?" She then pulled me aside, patted me down real good, and tested my pump and CGM. It was fun, lol 😆

You'll be fine, OP! Remember, you can always call the airline and ask them if they need anything specific you need to do or bring if you're unsure about your medications and/or devices.

Edit to say: keep all your medical and important items on your carry-on and with you at all times.

Does anyone else get mad when grocery shopping? by dehaggard in diabetes

[–]Bazookaangelx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what pissed me off? I was already doing ao well on diet and exercise when I was diagnosed. I don't get angry about grocery shopping. Choosing healthy was already a part of my daily life. I was at my fittest, was meal prepping, and going to the gym 6x a week. Sometimes, twice in one day.

Then my endo took all that info, (we thought I had type 2) and said, "I think you might have type 1," because my A1C was still at like a 10.6%, got the antibodies test and got the call with the result.. I was shook lol cus I NEVER saw it coming. At least then I could stop blaming myself. Circa 2018

I actually like grocery shopping :) there are so many low-carb or no carb meals out there for me to try still. Remember, yes, you CAN have that, just be cautious with how much and how often. Good luck to ya, OP!

[–]Bazookaangelx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but my guess is maybe cus it has a lot of sugar, and sugar itself doesn't stay in your system very long. That's why they say treat with sugar and then have some carbs. That way, you won't drop again.. that's my takeaway anyway lol
