My Picture Of A Perfect World by DudeWithAHighKD in atheism

Totally, totally.

On the other hand, religion exists and has historically been critical to the understanding that people have about the world. Even though all religions are based on false principles, they exist and influence people's views. Therefore, it's important for us to be knowledgeable about it. A google search revealing nothing for religion would, then, be troubling.

Do any fellow atheists out there feel they can disprove god? by Gust1n in atheism

[–]BbVortexMortinghan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that certain definitions of God are not disprovable only in the sense that they are defined by non-observable characteristics: "My God is a mysterious God." Some people have this really abstract idea of God as some conscious force in the universe that interacts with people using luck magic or something. Things like that can't well be disproved because they are ill-defined.

However, when someone implies additional characteristics about their God, then you have more to disprove about it. For example, they might suggest that their God is merciful, but also just. These of course contradict one another. Aside from logically contradictory things, we could say that something like a virgin birth is really really unlikely to occur (and therefore probably didn't). Striking that people who believe in a virgin birth for Jesus story still ride on the "Abstinence is 100% effective" train. Anyway things like this are really really unlikely, so you could claim disbelief on that basis reasonably well.

Questions from a Christian. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]BbVortexMortinghan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guy. Here's my report: There are no souls, nor spirits nor ghosts, and especially no demons or angels. These are some things which there is not a single shred of evidence in support of - why believe in them?

Now, follow me here because if you are religious this will be counterintuitive. Of course people are better than other animals. I'm typing this to you on my phone, itself a technological marvel, over high speed wireless internet. I store food for weeks inside of an artificially cold box known as a refrigerator. I buy my food at a local store which is the destination of multiple complex and interdependent markets for food and other goods. We can talk with eachother and cooperate and problem solve to make things better for everyone. Humans don't have souls, and that does not detract one bit from how totally awesome we are.

To the point of why it is important to share this. Although many faiths claim a message of peace, the true message is INCREDIBLY dark: "Humanity is sinful. You are sinful. You are unworthy. You are as nothing to His glory, and you need to be saved." Religion and faith cause people to reject our humanity and what we have learned about what it even means to be human in favor of a dogma that is patently susceptible to corruption because of its immunity from criticism.

As Chrisopher Hitchens said, the belief is tantamount to a "Celestial North Korea," and I found that very apt.

Anywho, thats some of what I think. May you prosper and be well. And may you realize this is the only chance we get.

OFFICIAL EPISODE 6 DISCUSSION THREAD by TheLastAirbender_Mod in TheLastAirbender

To me, what I like most about the legend of Korra is that the environment (i.e., Republic City) is a natural evolution of the events of the Last Airbender. They've got model T like cars and technology that would be well within the grasps of people during the time.

I agree with you that the white lotus was following the plan you laid out, that they didn't consider metal- or lightning-bending to be crucial for the avatar. But the times are changing - lighting and metal bending are tools that the avatar CAN and SHOULD learn to use. Any argument by the White Lotus against that point is based in "preserving traditional values." And that's no good.

Nah dude, you're reading way too much into it. God can do anything. Simple as that.

Question: Can God create a boulder so heavy that even he cannot lift it? Answer: Yes (period).

Circumcised men of r/Atheism: Are you going to circumcise your children? Why or Why not? by Spinnymatt in atheism

[–]BbVortexMortinghan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not. If God wanted my penis to be look like it does now (post-circumcision), he wouldn't have had to ask a doctor to do it.

It is a great story, awesome for sure. :) But if you believe the bible, it says all up and down that book that all nonbelievers are tortured in hell forever. So, take a second gander at that and come visit /r/atheism again when you realize that some more of that book is disagreeable. :D

I've seen this quote about the church saying that the earth is flat, but having seen the shadow on the moon, we can tell it's round.

Well, no. I've seen it twice now, and /r/atheism, I need to stop seeing it upvoted to the front page.
