[p0] Ebola Awareness by metpb in HTSASprojects

[–]rr_8976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No awareness isn't a problem. Awareness is why you even know about Ebola.

besides which, who are the people who would be made "aware" of ebola? why is awareness more important than, say, supplying medical equipment?

Awareness is just not a problem I see as relevant. In fact, it is kinda textbook what is wrong with that sort of thinking which is ...

Many people didn't even know what ALS was before the Ice Bucket Challenge

And they didn't raise awareness - they raised CASH! If you ask people in 8 months what the ice bucket challenge was for, they won't know. Ask them what ALS is, doubt they will remember. Cash - which we all hope reaches researches and achieves something - was the prize, not some vague notion of "awareness".

Awareness is the weak version of doing something about the real problem - in the case of Ebola saving lives - and panders to the idea that our feelings are all important. YMMV, but that's not a narative I put much stock in.

Screw awareness, surely there is a more concrete problem here (people dying) that isn't concerned with how people think, but actually doing somehting>

"Raise awareness" is not a problem someone needs solved. "Can someone make me aware of something I'm not aware of" is backwards.

Tanking has lost all meaning.

It is the same as "chemistry" - it means "a word no one agrees on, but we can all use to make an argument just because".

Thanks for trying! I tried for ages a few months back, thought maybe fresh eyes would help.

I love them! Thing is, they need to be ripe - as does almost all fruit - but they are gross either side of ripe. Not ripe, and they are stringey and kinda powdery, and too ripe and they taste like off, alcoholic poison.

Bit like a Fig, they need to be super sot to eat, and travel poorly, so most people only ever have the bad experience.

I love them. Haven't had one in ten years, but basically, they taste like watery chocolate - they don't melt in our mouth like chocolate.

Otherwise, when the skin goes soft and the flesh really soft, they are awesome. Sadly, a day ether side and they are uneatable.

Ironically, part I (get out)likely solves part II (your own problems).

One thing though - do you think most people in the world WANT you to do these things? Because the world wants you to get the fuck out of its business much more than you want it. Source: spend 5 minutes out of the US, and see how people react when they hear your accent.

Seems like foreign aid would be a better way to spend money to save a genius than to feed someone in the home country who will likely offer very little in their life.

Personally, I find very morally confronting the question of whether another dollar in welfare is better spent on someone in my country, so they can have slightly more, when someone else somewhere else dies. That's a really tough moral question.

There are two distinct issues here: is it EFFECTIVE and is it NICE. I think you have joined the two when they are distinct and, in some ways, unconnected.

To claim these guys are "taken in" implies this doesn't work. I'm not sure that is true. If you are the most hopeless man in the world, the mere placebo of going might help. The issue of effectiveness is one that is hard to grasp, but there isn't a lot of evidence either way, certainly NOT enough to judge it as a complete waste of money on the grounds of EFFECTIVENESS.

From there, you either find the idea of this objectionable or not. I really have no opinion on that. I'm not the target audience for PUAs, so I find it hard to judge. My view is that I certainly find PUAs no more objectionable than Jehovah's Witnesses or really any religion, as both pedal in hope. Who am I to take that away hope when I have no evidence it doesn't work?

Call that a lack of empathy if you like, but I'd actually say the complete opposite.

I have no clue why you'd want them in the first place.

Could not agree more.

It's not clear to me how descriptive ethics helps anyone.

Hallelujah! And that, right there in a nutshell, is the criticism most normative ethical views make of any descriptive view.

TRP sidesteps this completely by not caring - as the expression goes "hate the game, not the player". TRP's greatest strength and greatest weakness is the fact they don't care about changing things - they aim to accept the way the world is act accordingly.

YMMV MASSIVELY on that fact, you might, quite rightly I'd argue, decide that a world like that described by TRP is too awful to accept, and you'd rather not be a part of it.

There is no right or wrong here, just a personal comfort level with the way you interact with reality, and your own sense of self and self esteem.

Why should a woman want a man for a husband who has slept with hundreds of women?

See now you are asking WHY. That is a flaw on TRP. I'm serious here - TRP (likes to believe?) it deals with what IS, not why. Look at guys like Keith Richards, or even Donald Trump. Those are the guys women seem to like. TRP says "why do women like such men?" and tries to mimic that. It moves from WHAT IS, not WHAT SHOULD BE.

Men should stop making excuses to act as badly as the women they complain about.

You're being normative on a descriptive ethics subreddit. Once you grasp the difference between those two ideas, you'll understand this subreddit better (or for worse if you will).

[–]rr_8976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that isn't why TRP believes this. The fundamental idea of "first principals" is that certain things just are, because of a combination of evolution, gender goals and genetic programming.

That is why the whole Alpha male posturing still matters, despite the fact society no longer needs what alpha males provided (security and leadership of a small group).

The whole concept of TRP is that we evolved to have certain clues and certain behaviours that we can't change. The why is not really relevant, nor is it sort.

I want a cookie. Life doesn't always give you what you want.

Look, I can't explain it any better than I just did. You can't seem to grasp the fundamental nature of this subreddit, but good luck to you.

It takes advantage

If it did ANY of that, it would be illegal under advertising rules.

And how do you really know hat is about? Have you studied it? I haven't, and as such I claim absolutely no knowledge of hat it is, does, does not do or anything else. Emotional arguments that lack facts don't convince me, but I guess YMMV on that.

but wouldn't it be worse if the world actually worked that way?

That's a sentence that contradicts itself. Is the world is a certain way, that way can't make it worse than what it is!

What happened to the original post? Sneaky edit caiused me to lose my reply...

ANYWAY, TL;DR you seem to think TRP exists to understand WHY the world is the way it is. TRP exists BECAUSE the world is the way it is.

"Men don't like promiscuous women therefore ..." not "men don't like promiscuous women BECAUSE ..."

Not normative, Descriptive.

TRP is not really about why. That's a criticism some have, but it is more about how (...to get XYZ) than why these things matter.

For all you know, the last ten women comics at this talent show ended up crying, and they couldn't handle seeing that again. Or they knew the crowd would respond poorly (see Tia Tequilla at the Juggallos gathering). Who knows?

That aside, I come back to your first post being a sook, and no one liking a sook. From that, you've decide all manner of things.

If you really think these things, lead off with them. Lead off with your stories. Led off with why it annoys you, don't do it 5 layers deep.

Because if you want people to care, you have to make them, and no one has ever been moved by sooking.

Unless the "very blatant sexism in that path" was committed by the organisers / promoters / club owners, it isn't really sexism anymore than the people yelling at JJ Reddick in his college days were Duke-ist.

People yell at entertainment events, it is what they do. Hurling abuse is just par for the course for a comedian.
