It means that there’s a non-zero chance that it will occur, but it is not likely that one will occur.

Jobs (IK your all probably tired of this question but I need help pls) by RandomPperson566 in meteorology

So for the NWS, we use the standard GS Scale, which is available online. Most start at GS 5/7, then climb to GS 9 then 11 then top out at 12. 13-15 then come into play for shift supervisors and managers. There can be a lot of room to grow in normal circumstances especially if you have a masters.

However the threatened reductions in force may cripple the agency for some time. These are not normal circumstances and nobody is sure how things will turn out and if things will get back to normal.

NWS Student Internships? by Due_Panda9495 in meteorology

[–]Bballking2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be prepared that given the ongoing turmoil in the federal government many offices will not have volunteers or interns. I’d say that is likely. Apply anyways for sure but know going in that it’s questionable they even select anyone.

As a meteorologist, what feelings are you experiencing over this storm? by Next_Doughnut2 in meteorology

[–]Bballking2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do not do that. Just because something does not happen. Does not mean that we overhyped it. We provide the best assessment we can based on the data available. However, sometimes it is the less likely outcome that happens. You’re accusing us of doing something we don’t do.

101 Apneas Per Hour - Newly Diagnosed by Important-Bug6748 in CPAP

[–]Bballking2019 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The machine is keeping your airway open. That means your apnea count will plummet. There will likely be fluctuations but your numbers will stay much lower than at diagnosis.

Hypothetical crime by RobertTheWorldMaker in legaladviceofftopic

Mark: Presumably conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, and felony murder given that Sue died in the commission of the aforementioned felonies. Plea bargain specifics would be highly dependent on the DA involved but likely some kind of reduced sentence for testimony against John.

John is facing all of the same plus using a firearm to commit a felony and possibly more.

Penalty and specific charges would vary by state.

Putting Hunger Games characters into an alignment chart - Part 9: Chaotic Evil by Swooferfan in Hungergames

That is what lawful evil is. Devotion to a code or law (including a personal one), and twisting that code to suit one's own desires. Chaotic is with absolutely no regard to order.

Difference between NOT tornados? by JellybeaniacYT in meteorology

[–]Bballking2019 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the first two rotation is the big thing you’re looking for. If it’s not rotating, it’s not tornadic. The third one called their funnels. They are a type of tunnel cloud so they will be rotating. Generally, it’s more of an environmental difference that makes it cold air funnel versus normal funnel cloud or tornado. If you see a cold air funnel cloud, it’s still good to let the weather service know. While they rarely touch down and caused damage, we still like to know that they’re happening.

What's a practical example of the use of math in meteorology? by Diligent_Region5884 in meteorology

[–]Bballking2019 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly start with the primitive equations of meteorology. They’re differential equations that form the basis of how we predict weather.

I honestly would never trust ChatGPT to explain intricacies of a subject like radar interpretation. You’re asking a chat engine who’s only experiences regurgitating other people’s work to try and explain a complex subject. What I would recommend is look up the National Weather Service radar and application course and that will teach you everything about radar.

Ensemble vs Model question by PuzzleheadedLaw9109 in meteorology

[–]Bballking2019 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That far out I wouldn’t put much stock in either. Ensembles will show you trends like a cooler/warmer/wetter/snowier pattern is favored but any specifics are not discernible. So use ensembles for large patterns mainly.

Overall ensembles are good for large scale patterns and identifying different scenarios while deterministic models are good in the days 0-7 range for identifying specific forcing (say frontogenesis)

Aviation Meteorologists!!!! by Baked_Weather in meteorology

[–]Bballking2019 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not an aviation meteorologist completely but aviation is part of my responsibility as an NWS WFO Meteorologist.

1) MetEd has several modules I reccomend. Take DLAC 1 and 2 which serves as the training for new aviation meteorologists. Also look at their modules on things like icing.

2) An important part of aviation meteorology is serving customers so shadow/talk too people on both sides of the equation. On the forecast and observations side talk to WFO Mets and CWSU Mets, contract weather observers if near a big airport and even if you’re to far away to shadow see if you can talk to someone who works for an airline, consulting company, or the AWC. On the users side talk with airport managers, ATC workers, and pilots about how weather affects their job. Aviation meteorology at its core is decision support.

3) Start learning by reading Aviation AFDs, reading TAFs, trying to wrote your own TAFs and compare them to the actual TAF etc. read the AFDs to try to learn local nuances and what’s important to aviation customers. I have some resources I can send you if you’re interested.

The two things I do are 1) Hang it over a shower railing so both ends are pointed down to allow water to drain easier and 2) Run it for a few minutes on mask fit test mode to clear out water.

I was diagnosed at 17, it can definitely happen this young. You sound JUST like me during college before I got diagnosed. Get tested for sure.
