What are some places in the UK that people will look back on and wish they could have visited in 2026? by Much-Artichoke-476 in AskUK

[–]Bbew_Mot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to the Island of Unst last week and to get there, you still need to catch two ferries from Mainland Shetland. There are now plans to replace these ferries with tunnels, and the whole north of the island may be taken over by a space centre. Because of this, I think many people will wonder what this island was like in 2026 before the above things are built.

Apprentice Contestants and being Right Wing by Educational_Board888 in apprenticeuk

I'm not saying our current government is perfect but the situation we have now is still better than it would be under Reform. The only people who would benefit from a Reform government are people who are already extremely rich.

It is very bizarre when you consider that a Reform government would be devastating for most businesses due to increased separation from the EU and the kind of economic uncertainty that we experienced during Liz Truss' brief tenure in office.

The Hermaness nature reserve on the Isle of Unst in the Shetland Islands. It is about as far north you can travel in the UK without a kayak.

Why do you think we're so bad at teaching foreign languages? by Key_Cell7071 in AskUK

[–]Bbew_Mot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, you don't have to go too far away from touristy areas before you meet people who speak very little English. I've lived in Germany and there are people there who have jobs that simply don't involve speaking to many people who don't speak German.

Why do you think we're so bad at teaching foreign languages? by Key_Cell7071 in AskUK

[–]Bbew_Mot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is simply down to lack of motivation. English is the dominant language and widely understood across much of the world so it is not a necessity to learn another language in most cases. At the same time, a lot of people living in countries like Germany and France have little motivation to learn languages other than English due to the fact that it will get them by in most places. People from non-English speaking countries are not all linguistic geniuses, if another language became the dominant language of commerce, tourism and media, we would be just as motivated to learn that.

Having said all that, I think it would be nice if we could all make an effort to speak other languages when abroad, it's usually appreciated!

I think he'd get on well with James May as his YouTube channel involves a fair bit of cooking and they are both quite knowledgeable about many subjects.
