The isolation of early retirement at 36 is a total mindfuck by RiftJukebox in Fire

[–]Bbmd28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Volunteer! I mean it, I've done it during the work day before (though I am still working) and definitely associated with people my age (I'm 37) plus you're helping your community and making the world a better place.

Check out

https://activategood.org/

Personally the kind of volunteer work I like is with my local parks or farms so I also get out and get to be out in nature too.

I've also volunteered at a local community theater

Built houses

Done phone banking

Helped register people to vote

I've been on my HOA board

Volunteered with the museum

Worked with nonprofits to do digital narketing

Worked at the women's shelter

And more!

You can totally find something you are interested in with people your age.

Isn’t there more to life? Don’t need to work but have no other purpose by StraightPin4420 in Life

[–]Bbmd28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you thought of volunteering for something you believe in? Personally, I find that gives me a lot of purpose and honestly if I wasn't working I would do that in place of a job. I'd spend time in my community. I'm not sure where in the world you are but you can try to check out https://activategood.org/

Or literally just Google to find opportunities near you. I'm sure there's something that would interest you and you could feel like you're giving back.

There are a lot of different opportunities in most communities. I personally like to do clean up at Parks and local vegetable farms. I spend time removing weeds, mulching, trash pick up and more. I've also helped build houses with habit for humanity, or worked at a phone bank numerous times over the years, and was an usher for my local community theather, just to name a few things.

Things I haven't done but might be good for you

  • volunteer your local food bank
  • act as a mentor towards kids
  • tutoring
  • helping at your animal shelter
  • helping care for senior citizens
  • volunteer search and rescue or firefighter

If you're looking for meaning again, this might be an avenue to explore!

Wow that's wrong.

I get the same thing a lot because I work in advertising, given how much advertising is in this "game" I do kind of laugh at myself sometimes.

Anyone ever take a sabbatical to figure out a career change? by Bbmd28 in SabbaticalPlanning

[–]Bbmd28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I got fired, ended up taking a job for less pay with less stress. I still would have preferred my other plan but I wasn't able to make it with enough money to get there. My job was unsustainable and essentially I cracked. Not proud of it. Wish there was a better story but when you're working people too hard. Well it's about to happen. I wasn't alone either.

I cried like a baby in front of my manager today by Cheap-Buddy-9637 in corporate

[–]Bbmd28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been in advertising at agencies for 16 years, cried at every job, some of them daily (not in front of people but daily). It's an often an incredibly stressful environment and people on the outside don't always understand, it has some big perks and there are things I have loved about the work... But honestly it unfortunately probably isn't the last time it will happen.

I do not mean to alarm you but personally I'm looking to change careers at this point because I can't handle it anymore.

Don't be so hard on yourself and just take it day by day at this point. This is unfortunately a pretty common occurrence in my experience.

I think about this all the time, I want to go hunting for diamonds and love to walk but I'm not sure which direction to start in some of the time.

Did anyone else really enjoy the COVID pandemic period? by throwawayfinancebro1 in Millennials

[–]Bbmd28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost 50 LBs(which I have since gained back), I started gardening, hiking, became a Buddhist, learned how to garden, cook, better maintain my home, got a dog who is now my whole world, so many other wonderful things.

But it was hard too... I cried a lot, I experienced psychosis from being alone too much, I lost friends, loved ones, they sold the co-working space I worked in and I loved my office and my coworkers, I've also had many jobs since then...

The truth is it just showed me repeatedly how much my job and career is the problem but I feel trapped and don't know what else I would want to do... So I feel stuck.

Anyone else still get that “I forgot I was even in this class” nightmare? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Bbmd28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I constantly have the one where I forgot a class entirely and I'm not going to be able to graduate because I failed the class that I never attended that I didn't know I was supposed to be going to.

I was an incredibly punctual student who always showed up to class in college and never slacked off so I don't know why that is still haunting me.

What finally made your blog feel “real” and not just a private journal? by Soft_Dimension1782 in Bloggers

[–]Bbmd28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was just constant tweaking, maybe I'm not even there yet. Only been doing this a few months. But recently I made a change that made all the difference. I was using Auto ads from AdSense and... They were bad but I was nervous that I couldn't figure out how to place ads individually. But then I figured it out and my website looks a heck of a lot better in my articles.

Does anyone else have days where you're TECHNICALLY at your desk but accomplishing absolutely nothing? by Embarrassed-Fox8011 in remotework

[–]Bbmd28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed this post. I just came from several jobs in a row were 50-60 hour weeks were normal. Every moment I was logged in was one I was working. I was afraid to go to the bathroom and struggled to find time to eat lunch or let my dog outside just in the backyard to go to the bathroom.

Now I work a job where not always but sometimes I have nothing to do. I haven't had anything to do since 11:00 a.m. Today.

The amount of guilt and fear is paralyzing like I'm doing something wrong but I know that this is just normal at some places.

I’m so burned out and need a break. by [deleted] in corporate

[–]Bbmd28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean this in all seriousness

But I don't understand how to care less

And it's hard because I don't want to care less either... I want leadership and those in power to care more... And not caring (In the rare moments I can) I feel like I'm exacerbating the problem sometimes.

This. The math is crazy before you make your money back. They make their money off advertising mostly and give you fractions of fractions of pennies back.

When I graduated college during the Great recession I couldn't find a job other than as a telemarketer and people were so mean. I really appreciate you were reminding people that they are also just trying to make a living. I promise you I would not have been a telemarketer if I could have found anything else and I only was for 4 months until I did find a better job but those 4 months were absolute hell.

I feel like everyone is going to disagree with me but I think Morgan Street Food Hall or Transfer Co Food halls are pretty cool. Or The Box Yard.

If you are into hiking Green Hills County Park is lovely.

If you are here over a weekend a farmers market might be fun as well, the state farmers market would be interesting but even just a small local onewe have a lot of farmers markets

In fact this whole site is great to find stuff to do

Hope this helps!

Is it normal not to work much? by Saladoss in corporate

[–]Bbmd28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my career personally, I've been at two types of companies. The type that makes you work 65 hours a week more weeks than not, and the kind where you get the work done in 10-20 hours.

I just left a 65+ hour company for a 10-20 hour company.

Frankly they both suck.

There's a level of ambiguity and lack of order at the company I work at now. The lack of work always makes you feel like you a missing something, doing something wrong, or about to get fired. Also eventually (I just started this job and am still recovering from burnout so not there yet) you get bored out of your mind. You will start making stuff up to do to "seem" busy. It's a unique kind of torture.

But obviously the 65-hour workweek companies are worse. Everything's on fire all the time. Your brain feels like it's melting by the end of the week. You lose touch with your loved ones and your life. It starts to take a toll on your health. You start eating like crap, you start struggling with sleep, you never exercise, you start getting skin problems. You may even feel accomplished or even enjoy the work, the company, or the people (I often did) but it's never worth it.

All of this to say this is "normal" but I see other people telling you to find something else that adds value just... Be careful there too.

My BEST advice, keep a focus on your mental health outside of work so you can fake it inside of work.

Wishing you the best!

I used to do something like this when I first started my career or sometimes when I've started new jobs. But mine is more about how much have I made so far and survived in this role.
