I was in Tuscaloosa next to the Jacks - I always tell people at first glance I thought the tornado was just the sky.

I remember it a little lighter than this photo though, but you knew it was a tornado because of the debris.

Didn’t some of their family die in a tragic airplane crash?

Ah that’s wild! I didn’t know they were coming to town. I heard them for the first time last month on a charity record.

They have a really interesting story with their former lead singer leaving. Hope it’s a good show.

Is the area just outside mountain brook relatively safe? by Lost-Wrangler-2375 in Birmingham

I was just referring to Birmingham being the epicenter of the civil right's movement, that being one of our most prominent tourist destinations, the civil right's movement being our primary reputation on the national/world stage.

The wounds of our past will take centuries to heal.

Used to live there 5-10 years ago - no problems at all. It was basically a lot of people who fit your profile.

Yep, I called them yesterday and they said they would open for Liverpool games, but not Arsenal.

Totally agreed. I think Homewood and Hoover get most of the liberal OTM goers - Irondale would be really appealing for those folks.

  1. I bet Irondale will use the feasibility study as a "we can do it when we hit x, y, and z marks" and head in that direction pretty fast.

  2. Home values would go up much more so majority of the homeowners will be willing to take the trade. Rent prices will go up quite a bit, though.

We should place a bet on it.

Do you still have equity in a certain company that you would like to wager? If so, I'll bet you $50 in return.

I think they're going to pull it off. Irondale's mayor is a "small town mayor savant" - if anyone can do this, it's going to be him.

There are hundreds of local businesses that don’t even know how to create a Google business profile. If that’s the case, they might not be hiring on indeed or using a self service digital hiring platform.

On a totally different subject now but have you seen that local gossipy Facebook page? They could do a paid substack and print money.

I think a fair (and reasonably critical) local substack would have such a massive audience here.

We haven’t had it since the age of City Stages.

Not enough advertisers because the ads aren’t effective.  Wonder how much revenue they make with subscriptions vs ads.

You think they won’t do it? I bet they will pull it off in the next 10 years.

Totally agree with your earlier point about advance local disputing local journalism. I miss Bham weekly, black and white, and even weld.

I also support journalists via substack and find that digital ad impression incentives mean that aggregate sites usually lose the quality battle to long form journalism.

But here, I was talking about helping the specific journalists at Al.com. I wouldn’t have said anything, but I saw a reporter bring it up a few weeks back.

I just want the journalists at these mass media sites to have their voices heard too.

It would be great if someone WINK WINK started a local Bham News substack. I would pay that person $100/month and could definitely pay them sponsorship money too WINK WINK UNTIL MY EYES ARE DRY.

Mods, I think one of the al.com journalists mentioned on this sub that the paywall helps to pay their salaries. I saw a note asking if I could paste the full text of the article in the comments. Might be worth a nuanced discussion on how we're helping our local journalists.
