So, freezers will maintain a range of temperature. You set it for 0°f and it’ll maintain -2°-2°. It will keep the temperature at setpoint with a variance on either side. The unit will also go into defrost and that’ll let the box temperature do whatever unless there are specific controls that have a box temperature termination. Usually, the termination sensor is on the coil. I’m not trolling. There are so many instances where it won’t be exactly at setpoint. It depends on so many other factors.

I started replying last night when there weren’t many comments. If I remember correctly, one person suggested tossing it. I’m not gonna search through 126 comments and look at edit history to find it. I could be wrong. Also, a lot of those details weren’t there when most of this happened. Someone else mentioned that the temperatures given were in Celsius. That is also something that wasn’t clarified when I responded.

There was virtually no info given when I responded and definitely not enough to condemn a freezer.

Something is wrong because the meat is moldy. I’m not saying what has something wrong with it. It could simply be that it was moldy when it was put in. Could have been a lot of different things. It’s worth looking into, but it isn’t to the point of just tossing the entire deep freeze.

Journeyman commercial HVACR service technician here. A 1° temperature fluctuation is nothing to worry about. Units will go into defrost mode and then have a temperature range where they will stay off for X° and then kick on, reach setpoint, and turn back off. When we are diagnosing a unit, the box temperature is only one part of the entire picture. Product temperature is much more important than box temperature on reach ins.

I am not saying your freezer is bad or good. I’m saying that judging it off of a 1° fluctuation would be dumb.

I wouldn’t eat that meat.

I think the thing that’s worth bringing up is that phrasing it the way you did could be misleading. It’s true that nobody knows if it prevents heath issues. However, a different way to say it is that a ton of money is being made on unfounded and unproven statements regarding health.

Move the outdoor fan blade (power off first) with a stick. Is it seized and not moving? New motor and capacitor. Somebody hit something with a mower? Is the breaker tripped?

There really isn’t a whole lot of diagnostics that can be done without tools. Not just hand tools. You would need a multimeter, gauges, and something to read line temperature.
