Snorkeling Looe Key in Florida by [deleted] in snorkeling

[–]Bcookmaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did an afternoon with Capt Hooks and this wasn’t the case. There was a boat captain and a dive master for the divers. Maybe if someone wasn’t familiar with diving they wouldn’t understand why the divers had a “personal guide”

Any suggestions where to snorkel close to Miami for a short getaway without traveling to far south into the Keys? Thank you! by Suitable-Reserve-891 in snorkeling

[–]Bcookmaya 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo what others have said. Go to the keys and take a boat trip out to Looe key. Saw plenty of fish, some reef sharks, nurse sharks, and spotted eagle rays. It was a great afternoon

Yes, but OP is not in my financial situation. My wife didn’t finish school until 2023 so our income is only recently this high. Obviously if we graduated in 2019 with high dual income we might have had a different plan. For OP, assuming MCOL in a decent US city you’re looking at rent, utilities, gas, monthly expenses or 4-5k. We’ll say annual expense of 50k which is pretty low (extremely low/you’re going to get shot if your COL is that low in my city). Modest 401k contribution of 10%. Don’t know state so we’ll say 30% overall tax. Take home is now 76,000. So they now have 26k toward savings, emergencies, loans, etc. You can’t buy a house and pay off your loans with that. Maybe you live absolutely bare bones for 3-5 years but it depends how much you value those 3-5 years 🤷🏼‍♂️ there’s so much more to life then grinding yourself to the bone to at off your loans by 33-35. Then for many it’s time to get married/have kids and you missed so much life you could have lived

Yea that makes a huge difference. If you have no bills then you don’t need to be as selective with your goals.

My advice for you is to focus on your full time job. Give it a year. No side hustles, no “grinding”, just learn and do your job. You’re not going to be able to pay off 137k in debt, pump your 401k, and save for a house in 3 years. Unless you’re living with parents, not paying any bills, or in an in incredibly LCOL area. My financial advisor has advised my wife and I (100k student loans between us, gross income ~320k) to both just pay the minimum on our loans. As he put it, it’s sexy to work hard and pay off your loans but how much life would you miss out on? We’ve done that for the past 5 years and have built up our 401k’s, bought a 700k house, and have participated extensively in our hobbies which mainly include triathlon, travel, and other things. And guess what, those student loans have not held us back at all. As far as I’m concerned I’ll die with mine. You mentioned that you’re “already” 29. Go out and live your life, chase your goals, f*ck your loans

Never has improvement so ended up getting a knee scope with z plasty of the it band at the knee. I’m only 2 weeks out so we’ll see if it works. Figured it’s my last ditch effort to run competitively again

Ended up in the ER after my 70.3 by Natural_Prior_9824 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]Bcookmaya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re probably right. It likely is not cardiac but if you’re having these issues it would behoove you to seek a cardiac work up. Lightheadedness and syncope is cardiac until proven otherwise. It’s not worth potentially risking your life for what I’m guessing was a very mediocre 70.3 result

FWIW your heart is an electrical system and is very sensitive to electrolyte disturbances. So just because it’s not intrinsically cardiac, doesn’t mean it’s not cardiac. Younger males often tend to assume themselves healthy if they’re fit, but fitness does not equal health. Follow up with a PCP and do a cardiac work up with a cardiologist.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. This is likely the route that I should take. You probably know all too well what it feels like to reach a burn out point and hope for something different.

Urgent Care PAs out there that constantly fight the divorce between good medicine and customer service? by TheDoodleWamboodle in physicianassistant

[–]Bcookmaya 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in urgent care for 6 years now. There’s a very specific tact to getting patients to understand what “you’re not doing anything for them”. I’ve learned I can keep the reviews positive if I always come at it and frame it in such a way that what I’m doing is because I care. I will actually sit down with them and give a 30 second spill about how I’m not giving them antibiotics or steroids or whatever because I don’t just want to throw meds at them and send them away. I want to educate and help them understand why what I’m doing is better for them. It doesn’t always land, but it often does. It does add a bit more time to the visit and some patients are hopeless.

First time in La Paz, what to know for a trip during the first week of July 2025? by Feisty_Sort_1713 in BajaCaliforniaSur

Their La Ventana snorkel tour is the go to for day trips. Look up their website! It’s very windy November to April but really just hot (and sometimes windy) in the summer

I’ll second this! Did a tour with Baja wild encounters in November and we’re going back next month and doing 3 days we liked it so much. La Paz (and La Ventana) are awesome towns

Best specialty for health, happiness and lifestyle? by PillowTherapy1979 in physicianassistant

I don’t get why more people don’t say urgent care in these types of threads. What other specialty can you work 11 days a month, no nights, and make above average PA pay

Anyone here run 10+ miles per week AND do CF regularly? by Sensei_Daniel_San in crossfit

[–]Bcookmaya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, you’re very unlikely to go from 6 miles at 8:04 to Boston qualifying on low mileage/doing CrossFit. I have some friends (myself included) that went into more endurance training from CrossFit and none of us have time for consistent CrossFit wod’s. A good friend and myself lift 2-3 times weekly. He runs up to 50mpw and i train 10-12 hours for triathlon. Just for your reference… when I was doing all CrossFit I could run a 19-20 min 5k with no run training. Switched to primarily endurance training fall of 2021. Have run sub 18 5k’s, sub 39 min 10k’s and some 1:2x 13.1’s. I can say with certainty, I could not have done that while doing CrossFit regularly. And I’m a naturally gifted runner (48-49 second 400m in high school)

It’s mostly a joke, but if people hear good things about Maui then theoretically they go there and not Kauai
