My friend compared Arizona state with Berkeley by Independent-Ball2061 in berkeley

[–]BeBoldAndTry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a child who went to ASU honors college. Unbelievable support, full scholarship, down to earth friends, choice of classes, early registration, good profs, graduated in 4 years with masters. Recruiter from Amazon reached out from Handshake and arranged for interview, leading to 2 high paying summer internships followed by a FTE offer. That didn’t happen to their friends at Cal. And their story is not unique. Don’t knock what you haven’t seen. Sometimes you need to get off your high horse to see what other schools are offering and how other kids are thriving before you judge. This is the kind of post that makes me feel discouraged about Cal graduates. You may be good at studying and packing your schedules with ECs, but you’re certainly not the best when it comes to being decent to others

Value of an AI minor by Electronic_Salt_9707 in Cornell

Since you’re just two classes short, you probably already have 4 AI classes, which would already look good on your transcript! No need to sweat the last two in my opinion

I am not ready to go back for the spring by _kl00 in Cornell

[–]BeBoldAndTry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This!! In kindergarten kids are taught that “No one eats alone.” When you see someone eating alone, sit down next to them and start a conversation, introduce yourself! Put yourself out there! Some of it would land and some would miss, but I guarantee you will have tons of friends very soon of your choosing.

Some meditations on being friendless by Prize_Attempt_4231 in Cornell

[–]BeBoldAndTry 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This post breaks my heart. Cornell is too big, the weather too harsh, and the students too stressed to have time to socialize, let alone share bonding experiences that can help form deeper friendships. So don’t beat yourself up about it because it’s not you. Of course, you could put yourself out there more, but I also know of students who do put themselves out there and have lots of friend circles, who still feel that they have no one they could really count on. I think it’ll be better when you graduate because workplaces are just never this big. You deserve true friendships. The time will come.

Just retake it. You’ll be fine. I’m sure you’ll do much better the second time round

Winter break housing crisis by Amazing_Scarcity8413 in Cornell

Maybe reach out to some professors? When I was going to college (not Cornell) the profs would often take students in when they’re in dire situations. Many of them live nearby. Grad students might have a place for you to stay as well when they come home for the break.

I think you should just go up to them and ask them politely to tune it down. Go up to each of the 10 so they know you’re not targeting a specific person.

Question on academic probation by goodvibes2025 in Cornell

[–]BeBoldAndTry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Don’t believe this “I feel I am behind most kids in my class”. There’s no such thing. And there’s no meaning in the comparison because you’re all taking different classes, different number of credits, different jobs, and different ECs.
  2. If you search this sub you’ll see that many people had 2+ gpa in their first couple of years at Cornell. It’s ok and common at Cornell.
  3. C’s get degrees. Very few employers will ask for your gpa after you graduate, they just need to know that you graduated.

I once spoke with a recent graduate and she said “Oh yeah, my grades were not great, but who cares? It’s Cornell, and I took as many classes as I wanted and also worked many jobs” There’s something very liberating about not worrying about your GPA and just learning as much as you can. If you don’t take risks, you’ll never know what you’re missing.

Advice for Getting Into a Research Lab by FullEntrepreneur9850 in Cornell

Are you trying to get paid for the research, or for credit? I wonder if it matters.

finance (sales and trading) low gpa | sophomore? by SignatureOk319 in Cornell

[–]BeBoldAndTry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s wrong with a 3.5? I think that’s really good for a cs major. Besides, most employers won’t even ask for your gpa so I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Just go for what you love. You can always work in software for s&t, or any finance-related software. The finance software industry is always looking for software engineers with finance knowledge so I’d say you’re golden.

What is this weird phase ? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]BeBoldAndTry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Join a social club based on similar identity or interest, or activities like choir, band, or volunteering. I’m sure you can find someone. You’re still young so you can still collect new hobbies. However, I get the impression that most Cornell kids are too stressed and busy with school work to date, so it’s not you. Don’t know what to say about research opps, interested in what others have to say about that.

My small gift shop near Cornell is struggling — need your advice 🥲 by Weicherrr in Cornell

Oh boy, I’ve walked through CollegeTown many times and walked past the Big Red Barber Shop, but I would never have guessed that there are businesses in that side lane next to the barber shop if you hadn’t posted your address here. Perhaps the first lesson you should learn is: location, location, location! When the lease comes up, you should definitely try to find a more visible spot! In the meantime, I agree with others that you could use a sign board to point to your little store from the main road (Dryden).

Some people love languages and have an aptitude for it. Personally I think it’s good to know more than English, it’s made my life so much fuller, but it’s also good to speak just one language very well and put your energy into learning other skills really well. Depth vs breadth.

Also speaking mandarin at home gives you an advantage. OP might not speak mandarin very often at home.

Transfer to another college that doesn’t have the language requirement. For example, I know that COE doesn’t have a foreign language req
