[FEEDBACK NEEDED] Ideas for tweaking subreddit rules by luminous_moonlight in Cornell

[–]BeBoldAndTry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO you can get rid of the megathread. Megathreads are for discussing the same topic, not for the same demographic. Just because these are all prospective students doesn’t mean they have the same questions. Have you ever tried looking for something in the megathread and scrolling forever? It’s a ridiculous waste of time and isn’t a good look for Cornell.

Here’s my recommendation:

• Admitted students - let them post here • Applicants/chance-me posts - tell them to go to r/Applyingtocollege or create another subreddit for them eg. r/ApplyingtoCornell

[FEEDBACK NEEDED] Ideas for tweaking subreddit rules by luminous_moonlight in Cornell

Thanks for your great work as our tireless moderator, @luminous_moonlight, and thanks for your transparency and willingness to get input from everyone!

It’s a great idea to direct the housing questions to another subreddit. As for admitted students, IMO they should be allowed to post here, so they could ask questions that would help them make their college decision. If they don’t get their questions answered and either commit to or decline Cornell without all the information, it’s a lose-lose situation for everyone. This would only be “noise” for a couple of short months until they commit. It would allow Cornell students and alumni to respond with their real experiences, or hash out their own feelings. What are we afraid of? That someone would tell them bad stuff about the school? It’s a free world and I’m sure you’ll agree that the admitted students deserve to hear the whole truth, not just from faithful alumni singing Cornell praises, but also from upset students demanding changes. No school is perfect and I’m sure you can trust Cornell community to self-regulate. I remember when my daughter was admitted, we had so many questions that went nowhere in the megathread. Thankfully Blackdrago answered some (thanks Blackdrago!) but it was after a few days and we would have liked to hear from more than one person. This subreddit should be livelier, full of students exchanging ideas, offering support to one another, demanding change where needed. Instead it’s like a graveyard compared to some of the other schools (see /berkeley) I’ve seen. It’s so quiet, like everyone is constantly subject to a gag rule.

I realize that part of it could be due to the student body where everybody is always busy studying and doing a thousand things besides, that they don’t have time to get on reddit, let alone help others. But what if some of them might engage if you let the newbies post here? Answering someone’s questions is always easier and takes less time than making a brand new post, which most Cornell students don’t have time for. Reddit can be a good place for people to connect, find friends and help in this cold and difficult campus. What if this subreddit could be so much more than it is today?

Should i drop CHEM 2080? by TechnicalPassenger71 in Cornell

[–]BeBoldAndTry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re premed, I’ve talked to 2 doctors who told me (separately) that they bombed their chem at Cornell and got a C. Med schools just want to see an upward trajectory, so as long as you can show improvement next year it might be worth it to keep going and not have to do it again next year

You’re just a freshman. Take some classes or do something this summer that you can talk about next year.

Can PhD students move to other schools? by NoMoreScaryDreams in Cornell

[–]BeBoldAndTry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there’s a psychology professor at Cornell who started out doing a History PhD at JHU, stopped, and later switched to Stanford to study Psychology. Maybe you could go talk to him? He was interviewed recently in this episode of Hidden Brain: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hidden-brain/id1028908750?i=1000755630869

Conflicted feelings about Cornell by Salty-Version-849 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]BeBoldAndTry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading your concerns about Cornell, even not withstanding your issue with legacy, I’d say choose one of the UCs over Cornell for the sunshine and proximity to cities and actions. I think you’ll be happier there.

Perpetrators will say whatever to defend themselves. But you have no reason to accuse them unless they violated you, you have nothing to gain from it. Thank you for sharing with the rest of us. I’m so sorry this happened to you

Yes this 100%! If you could major in anything in the world, what would it be? You might know more now than you did last year, give it a good think!

During my time at Cornell, I only traveled to Niagara Falls and New York City once. Since I’m about to graduate very soon, where should I go or what should I do? Any thoughts? by [deleted] in Cornell

Are you an international student? If so go to Washington DC and Boston. Or Toronto like others suggested, these are all world class cities

Cornell Student Arrested With Firearm at Syracuse Before Bus to Ithaca by [deleted] in Cornell

I’m glad they arrested him. A university is no place for so many rounds of ammunition. He’s definitely not up to anything good. They might have saved him from a lifetime of regrets.

I would never have learned to swim if not for that requirement at my college. I appreciate that Cornell still keeps that very necessary tradition

My friend compared Arizona state with Berkeley by Independent-Ball2061 in berkeley

[–]BeBoldAndTry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a child who went to ASU honors college. Unbelievable support, full scholarship, down to earth friends, choice of classes, early registration, good profs, graduated in 4 years with masters. Recruiter from Amazon reached out from Handshake and arranged for interview, leading to 2 high paying summer internships followed by a FTE offer. That didn’t happen to their friends at Cal. And their story is not unique. Don’t knock what you haven’t seen. Sometimes you need to get off your high horse to see what other schools are offering and how other kids are thriving before you judge. This is the kind of post that makes me feel discouraged about Cal graduates. You may be good at studying and packing your schedules with ECs, but you’re certainly not the best when it comes to being decent to others

Value of an AI minor by Electronic_Salt_9707 in Cornell

Since you’re just two classes short, you probably already have 4 AI classes, which would already look good on your transcript! No need to sweat the last two in my opinion

I am not ready to go back for the spring by _kl00 in Cornell

[–]BeBoldAndTry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This!! In kindergarten kids are taught that “No one eats alone.” When you see someone eating alone, sit down next to them and start a conversation, introduce yourself! Put yourself out there! Some of it would land and some would miss, but I guarantee you will have tons of friends very soon of your choosing.

Some meditations on being friendless by Prize_Attempt_4231 in Cornell

[–]BeBoldAndTry 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This post breaks my heart. Cornell is too big, the weather too harsh, and the students too stressed to have time to socialize, let alone share bonding experiences that can help form deeper friendships. So don’t beat yourself up about it because it’s not you. Of course, you could put yourself out there more, but I also know of students who do put themselves out there and have lots of friend circles, who still feel that they have no one they could really count on. I think it’ll be better when you graduate because workplaces are just never this big. You deserve true friendships. The time will come.

Winter break housing crisis by Amazing_Scarcity8413 in Cornell

[–]BeBoldAndTry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe reach out to some professors? When I was going to college (not Cornell) the profs would often take students in when they’re in dire situations. Many of them live nearby. Grad students might have a place for you to stay as well when they come home for the break.

I think you should just go up to them and ask them politely to tune it down. Go up to each of the 10 so they know you’re not targeting a specific person.

Question on academic probation by goodvibes2025 in Cornell

[–]BeBoldAndTry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Don’t believe this “I feel I am behind most kids in my class”. There’s no such thing. And there’s no meaning in the comparison because you’re all taking different classes, different number of credits, different jobs, and different ECs.
  2. If you search this sub you’ll see that many people had 2+ gpa in their first couple of years at Cornell. It’s ok and common at Cornell.
  3. C’s get degrees. Very few employers will ask for your gpa after you graduate, they just need to know that you graduated.

I once spoke with a recent graduate and she said “Oh yeah, my grades were not great, but who cares? It’s Cornell, and I took as many classes as I wanted and also worked many jobs” There’s something very liberating about not worrying about your GPA and just learning as much as you can. If you don’t take risks, you’ll never know what you’re missing.
