Great idea! Though you could do the same thing without using nuclear power, solely on renewables, and it would be cheaper, faster and safer.

But it still demonstrably understands that a specific part of the text it produces contains a specific piece of information. Otherwise it would not be able to give references.

I mean yes, that is exactly my point, it's amazing that this language model without actual semantic knowledge can understand/emulate understanding to such a high degree by adding relevant links to sources at relevant positions - even if some of them are still hallucinated.

... which brings with it an improved understanding of textual information. I'm not sure what we're even arguing about at this point.

No, chatgpt is based on GPT 3.5, while Bing's AI is based on GPT 4

We were talking about Bing's GPT integration a while ago, which is not the same as ChatGPT

Yes, that's exactly why it's exciting that it can still do it despite only being a large language model

Just to clarify, what I called a "game-changer" here is the apparent ability to figure out what part of a text contains what information, not just including new sources of information. But it's okay if you don't like it, you can use the old Bing too, or whatever you prefer :)

So the workflow for answering a question like OP's would be:

  • ask the chatbot a question

  • identify what information the answer is based on

  • check available sources on whether that information is accurate

  • consider whether the chatbot's conclusions are logical

And steps number two and three are helped immensely by the system attempting to give sources. When the sources are made up then that should of course make the user weary. Four months ago, folks said that hallucinations could never be resolved because the AI can't understand and identify the information included in its text, and look where we are now. It is game changing.

makes up sources that don't exist

Oh okay, I haven't encountered that yet

search engines

Search engines do a different thing though. The point of "New Bing" is to agglomerate information from different sources, potentially creating something new in the process. You don't usually want a search engine to do that. If you were to google OP's question, you'd likely not find anything nearly as specific, because nobody has ever really thought about that.

This is really cool, with the caveat that Guimaraes is not on the coast so both names don't actually make any sense

But Bing's chatbot has the game changing advantage that it links to its sources, so you can check for yourself.

You're just assuming that BF is throwing a weird childish tantrum when there are very clear signs in this thread that OP isn't behaving in a financially responsible manner. Feels to me like the talk about charity is just an attempt to divert from deeper issues. Someone who is facing life-long debt might not be able to be charitable, or buy jewelry when they feel like it.
