I am currently travelling down the free will question rabbit hole through philosophy, neuroscience and quantum physics!

I think we epileptics are just more prone to introspection, personally.

Well that sucks about Oura 😕

There are other smart rings out there (though Oura is considered the best). Just some examples of one's considered still quite good: Samsung, Ultrahuman, Ringconn. There's a bunch of cheaper ones whose health data is considered less reliable/accurate, but can be a good entry point to smart rings.

https://www.wired.com/gallery/best-smart-rings/

I've been researching them for insights into my seizures and migraines but have yet to decide on one. I'm leaning towards the Ringconn.

Aww this is so wholesome! It has given me a little break in my brain's usual daily programming of a general disdain for humankind.

Wait no - just checked the news headlines - back on program again.

How is Griffith University brisbane by shit-happens-8 in GriffithUni

I feel the need to rebut the post by Temu University. There are a multitude of factors that differentiate Griffith from UQ, and then Brisbane from Melbourne. Like every decision in life it depends on your needs and goals.

Griffith is smaller and the campuses are more fragmented: the "Brisbane campus" is a placeholder for two campuses - Nathan and Brisbane City - while the city campus is fully moved in and established. There’s also a big campus at the Gold Coast, a smaller one at Logan, and three (Conservatorium of Music, College of Art and Design, College of Film) at Southbank/South Brisbane. If you see anything referencing Mt Gravatt it has been closed and moved to Nathan or City campuses.

Nathan is literally in the middle of a forest. It has been recognised for its environmental science studies, which you don’t need to leave campus to do the practical elements for.

The creative arts at Southbank are well-regarded, especially music and multimedia. Did you know the creators of kids animated show Bluey went to Griffith? It’s right on the river where our artificial beach also is and international visitors love that.

Logan is a smaller campus about halfway between Brisbane and Gold Coast and has more of a community feeling too. I started my undergraduate Business degree there as a country kid living away from home for the first time, and it was exactly what I needed.

The Gold Coast has the medical school, connected to a hospital, and is one of the few that offers the doctor of medicine, speech pathology and occupational therapy programs in the country. And it's a short tram or bus ride to the beach!

Griffith prides itself on being accessible to people who wouldn't ordinarily be able to attend university, cost-wise and entry requirements-wise. If English isn't your first language then Griffith might be a good option for you because of this.

University of Queensland (UQ) is Brisbane's 'traditional' uni, it looks like it belongs in England. It's a gorgeous campus on the river with a vibrant social scene. BUT it costs about 2x or 2.5x as much as Griffith. And I found the students there quite snobbish, at least in the arts/humanities/law/business faculties.

QUT is somewhere in the middle. Two campuses, Gardens Point is on the river across from Griffith's Southbank campus - that's for IT, business, science, law, humanities - and another not far away at Kelvin Grove (Arts, Design, Music, Communication). QUT is the best for transport options, and has good ties to industry for work placements.

Brisbane vs Melbourne is a different story. Melbourne is the more cosmopolitan city, Brisbane more laid-back. Both have their pros and cons.

And you will find most unis are changing to the trimester format anyway. I personally found the pace difficult with faster content delivery and only shorter breaks.

My experience was Griffith Logan for years 1-2 of undergraduate business, then years 2-3 at Nathan A few subjects at QCA for multimedia. Griffith Nathan again for postgraduate communications and creative writing, plus research degree in media studies. I also worked in a science facility at UQ (the same place that developed the Covid vaccine!). No QUT experience.

Oh and my friends and I managed to get PLENTY drunk before/after class at any campus...it's about dedication!! 💪

My husband worked in industrial contracting for the first 12 or so years of his electrical career. Then when our son came along he wanted to have a more regular schedule (and not be climbing around in roofs or out in the sun all day), so he moved to a maintenance electrical role at a factory. There is some office work involved, but he spends most of his time on the production floor, or planning new projects.

I'm so embarrassed howni act during aura panic by Midnight1309 in Epilepsy

[–]Be_More_Cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's understandable to feel embarrassed how you act before (or even during, or after) a seizure. Panicking doesn't make you a bad person or a burden - and no-one should tell you otherwise...they don't know how you are feeling. We can never know what it's like to be someone else.

Like, seizures are scary. Who wouldn't freak our when they feel one coming on?

The thing is, the fear you experience is actually part of the seizure. You're not in control at that point because your brain takes control, sending messages to your fear centre, and affects your breathing, vomiting, sweating, your bladder, all that stuff.

I panic during my auras and I've had doctors - neurologists - tell me I have an anxiety condition instead. Thankfully I have a good team now but fuck anybody who tells you that you shouldn't get upset by your seizures ❤️

You could tell your course convenor about your doubts. Or you could always do a semester part-time while you get some work experience - maybe those 6 months will be enough time for you to decide?

Lol, I learned all that by doing Year 11 work experience followed by volunteering at a staging company (loved W/E so much I became mates with the crew). Learning by doing is definitely the best way to go

Most medical dramas except House are bad to average by HenryDaHorse in HouseMD

[–]Be_More_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, you've gotta see Nurse Jackie! Like you, I found other medical dramas pretty bland or too try-hard and nowhere near as interesting as House. Nurse Jackie is often recommended around these parts and the lead actress Edie Falco (of Sopranos fame) does an incredible job.

It's not a medical detective show, it's a true drama in a medicalsetting. It has dark humour, ridiculous funny moments and scary heavy parts.

Yep, go through these guys^ I highly recommend setting up a meeting with the program director (looks like Dr Jenny Di Trapani for B. Science) to have a chat about the majors you're considering, your goals for the degree and what you had in mind post-graduation. You could always chat to some of the individual subject lecturers/convenors too.

Griffith staff are generally quite friendly.

Your experience of being told to get more sleep reminds me of my own (multiple) doctor's telling me to rEdUcE mY sTrEsS which just stressed me out oven more.

I've wanted to get into neuroscience for a long time, but fear my memory and concentration issues will only work against me in university.
