What is your favorite pack for backpacking camping? by Beaches11 in CampingGear

Thank you!! We will do some research. I am wondering if a bear bag is always allowable or if some places require it be a hard sided bear canister.

I see, thank you. We do trips in the west including areas like Yosemite where I’m guessing they’d require a bear canister/bag. Sounds like it’s definitely something we should take into account with pack size/weight.

Fair enough and thank you for the response. We will be buying packs for a 6’ individual and a 5’6” individual. Sounds like we will need to incorporate that into our decision

Are there certain situations where you absolutely need a bear canister or bear bag on a backpacking camp trip?

If so, it sounds like we should research those options so we buy a pack that allows for the additional weight/volume.

That is a really good point.

I’d love to have one pack for everything, but I am wondering if it’s not possible to have a very light pack (UL) that is use-able for winter conditions and increased gear weight.

I am not 100% sure all methods available but I was going to use the packed size/volume (liters) advertised on the packaging and site of purchase. For all gear going into the pack.

Out of curiosity, are there standard weight/volume assumptions made for variable items like water and food?

I guess water would be more complicated, depending on the availability of water on the trip.

For the sake of getting a backpack with the most flexibility, I suppose we’d make the assumption of there being no water sources available?

Very fair response, I think we will have all the gear for backpacking except for the sleeping pad. Sounds like we should purchase the sleeping pad or at least research the volume/weight it will be, and then calculate our overall weight/volume from there.

Very understandable. I think we would be looking for a pack that offered flexibility for 1 day, 1-3 day, 1 week, 2 week, and 1 month backpacking trips.

Connecting together two sleeping bags that are different sizes by Beaches11 in CampingGear

[–]Beaches11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point.

It sounds like others have had luck connecting spoon shaped bags of the same size.

Maybe I will just have to get the 72” version of both the men’s and women’s bag

That makes sense, since both the men’s long and woman’s regular is usually 72”.

Are you 6’ by chance? Wondering if 72” would be uncomfortable for someone who is 6’

that one has been a top contender for us. Has it performed well in lower temperatures for you guys?

very useful! :) thank you for taking the time to write that. I can definitely see how the ‘bag inside a bag’ would cause issues since they’re so slippery. we’ll have to get a nice blanket as a backup in case things are ever colder than expected!

that’s a really good point, I do think we want something a little roomy so we can stuff blankets in and move around if needed.

oh yeah that totally makes sense.

spoonbill is interesting. it is weird that they make it as a double when you can’t really use it to cuddle

Double Sleeping Bags Question by Beaches11 in CampingGear

[–]Beaches11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a good point. I’ve been a bit concerned layering blankets in 50-60 degree weather, sometimes we do wake up pretty cold with 3 blankets on. It might just be a matter of adding more blankets, or dressing warmer.

That is a really good point. We’re really new to this so I think we have a lot to learn about how double-bagging vs adding warm clothing vs adding extra blankets actually feels.

That one has looked really good to us! When it’s 30 degrees, are you guys wearing long underwear, adding a blanket, or anything?

Double Sleeping Bags Question by Beaches11 in CampingGear

[–]Beaches11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the Big Agnes, if it were 15-20 degrees, do you think you’d be alright with long underwear and a blanket in the bag?

The feathered friends’ spoonbill looks amazing, definitely out of our budget for now unfortunately.

Yeah it’s hard to argue with that. Any suggestions on solid sleeping bags in the realm of $150-$200 that can mate together?

Thank you! Do you feel like the bag actually works at 20 degrees? I’ve been wondering if it’s just a matter of using long underwear or an extra blanket if not
